Funky Pills

There's some serious World Blues going on around here.  Two wonderful musicians join me here on our blues original Blues For Peace - Joe Bongiovanni takes the opening soulful electric guitar solo and Al follows with such fine jazz playing.  These guys both have deep roots in Ohio, and their love of the blues sure shows.  Here's to Peace -

Blues For Peace - Joe Bongiovanni / Al Schulman / Jamie Rhind

I have some friends in Toronto who are serious students of West African Malinke drumming. This is an excerpt of a performance their band - Bolokelen - did in Kensington Market several years ago. I got to be a guest drummer on the Dun Dun (more specifically the Sangban - the colourful drum seen on the right side of this photo, played with a stick). Not my usual drum of choice (that would be Djembe or Congas) and it showed at times!

This photo is from the popular Afrofest show in Toronto, and the dancer is Tapa Diarra, a Malian singer now living in my home town Montreal. The fellow in the orange poncho is my best friend Frank, seen playing Dun Dun here.  :)

Just wanted to put up a few examples of my Latin & African drumming from back in the day since I am a drummer/percussionist first, but I don't have much here on Soundcloud.  apologies for the poor sound quality.

I was interested in music in my early youth... so I soon got my first synthesizer and set up a small home recording studio.
over the years i played keyboards in 5 bands...the direction was rock...pop...blues and soul.
in the meantime i have discovered my enthusiasm for creating my own songs.
it makes me happy when I can compose...arrange...mix...produce and create something new.
it's like a passion to experiment with different styles of music... and it gives me a lot of joy.
the only limit is your imagination...
is my motto.
and everything is possible...you just have to try.

music is pure magic...and part of the soul...
no one can escape her
