Finally getting a vinyl re-release is Frank & Tony’s seminal work with breakout duo Bob Moses. Back in 2012 Francis Harris and Anthony Collins (Frank & Tony) worked with their fellow New Yorkers before they went on to sign to Domino Records.  

The four track EP is a deep, introspective dive into Frank & Tony’s early production work with the understated melancholic vocal stylings of Bob Moses (Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallence) that would pave the way to a new sound in house music. An essential release now for the first time on vinyl, capturing a vital period in both outfits' development.

Founded by Robbie Redway, Mathieu Seynaeve and WaiFung Tsang, UK-based 'United Freedom Collective' has grown into a collaborative network of diversely talented artists that includes Jordan Stephens, Falle Nioke, Eliza Shaddad, Labdi, William Rees and Facesoul, among others. WaiFung and Mathieu work as psychedelic researchers and health practitioners, so in addition to the four EPs released on Maribou State's 'Dama Dama' label, they have also created soundscapes for psychedelic therapy sessions, online yoga and breathwork channels. 

Influenced, in their words, 'by birds, trees, Buddhism, yoga, headless way meditations, Jungian analysis, Zen Taoism, Chinese plant medicines, indigeneity, Amazonian and psychedelic cultures, icaros and worldwide healing traditions.' The music is eclectic, ranging from afro-inspired jazz to Chinese folk, psych-rock to dub and dance music, an ambitious and inclusive range that has already seen them work with musicians in Kenya, pointing to exciting future collabs that extend well beyond the borders of western musical traditions. Their sound was described by Clash Magazine as an 'aural mosaic that glitters with colour and potential,' and while the sheen of the production and precision of the arrangements might seem a departure from Multi Culti's left-field endeavours, the psychedelic idealism and global connectivity make it a natural fit with the open-ended ethos of the label.

On this new EP, Robbie takes the lead on production and, for the first time, sole vocal duties on all five tracks, which present a fantastic range of influences and style. Lead single 'Between Memories' blends tropes of ecstatic dance with uplifting vocal piano house, somehow making hippie flutes fit in with Detroit strings to epic, hands-in-the-air effect.' Title track Bright Patterns' bridges the gap between Jungle, Jai Paul, and Jamiroquai, a fusion of funky filtered disco-house and electroclash with side-chained pop vocal hooks.' 

Having already had radio support from KEXP, BBC6 Music (Laverne, Ravenscroft, Charles, Nemone, Letts), Jazz FM and Worldwide FM (Gilles Peterson), with a live show has recently sold out Dalston Curve Garden and The Waiting Room, London (as well as gigs at Lost Village, Blue Dot, Neon In Nature and Wilderness festivals) the young collective's future is looking exceptionally bright.

You can see Connan Mockasin in glorious live action this autumn, when he and his band embark on their own headline tour of the UK, playing dates across the country at the end of September. Having already toured with Warpaint in the summer, as well as scoring the first short film from acclaimed video director Kinga Burza, and collaborating with the idiosyncratic likes of Charlotte Gainsbourg and Sam Eastgate of Late of the Pier, it is certain that the eccentric pleasures of Connan Mockasin aren’t going to stay a cult secret for too much longer.

A new Optimo Music Disco Plate and the debut release from Feon. When these tracks first came my way I instantly knew they were ripe for a release on the label. Original, idiosyncratic, psychedelic, full of imagination and featuring a couple of dancefloor hits, how could I resist? Also, “The Sun is High” was surely destined to become a sun-blissed summer anthem…..
Feon has a few things he’d like to say about this EP :
“I wrote these tracks in a manic ten-day session, shortly after an unravelling ayahuasca ceremony, which is evidenced in the psychedelic sound of the first track in particular. Upon reflection there is something of a primal quality to “The Sun Is High”, we were all sun worshippers at one point in our ancient history. The vocals are my voice stacked thirty odd times in different harmonies, then put through a space echo, and they're followed by some gratuitous Moog noodling to boot! For use at the beach party.
The flip goes into darker more experimental territory, with “Holland Fly By” taking clear inspiration from an old iMPLOG track, and “Without Sound” getting stranger still, the vocal refrain's mournful, tense landscape interrupted by boisterous drums.
Its a real joy and honour that I can add something to the Optimo sound world as it is one that has given me great pleasure over the years.”
