Steve Sibra is no newcomer to the French electronic music scene. Active since 1999, he has already released several albums and around forty EPs. 
Originally from Paris but now based in Montpellier in the south of France, Steve is a radio man. For many years, he hosted Laboratoire Sonore on Montpellier 91 FM, where he welcomed the cream of international artists to his show. 

Steve joined the Brique Rouge team in 2022 and, in just a few releases, has risen to become one of the core artists shaping the label's sound. He brings his inimitable touch of melancholic deep techno and melodic, cinematic soft house, sometimes infusing it with a strong electro influence and a few experimental touches. The quality of his productions having won over everyone who listened to them, it was only natural to (finally) offer an album that allows listeners to enter Steve's dancefloor universe.  

And what an album! With 21 tracks, it's more than an adventure, it's a huge sonic trip that draws you in from the very first track and takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions, vibrations, and sensations that doesn't let go until the very last track. It's a coherent universe, where every note is weighed for a minimalist approach to a melodious groove. 

Sometimes leaning towards “sunset music,” sometimes towards a slightly darker melancholy, Telepath Voodoo leaves no one indifferent, and each listen brings its own set of details and surprises.  So listen to it loud, listen to it on headphones, listen to it while dancing or meditating, but let yourself be carried away on this long journey that Steve Sibra offers you.  Undoubtedly one of the most important French House and Electronic artists of the moment.

Created in 1999 by David Duriez, the independent French label Brique Rouge continues to promote the electronic sound that David has always believed in and defended. Far from the formatting and excessive vulgarity of the current electronic scene, the label promotes an eclectic electronic sound that remains rooted in the underground and, above all, in a clubbing vibe.  In general, the artists on the team are given carte blanche, and it is above all the spirit that counts. The label does not seek success; it is a success. The success of being able to release music without compromise. With one release per week on platforms since 2020, the label (and its divisions RZ Muzik & Obliqu3) is seen as a key player in the French underground electronic scene due to its activism.

Every sound is a modular approach to sound design, using some awesome M4L devices to map the parameters at random but keeping a controlled rhythm, sitting at 120BPM we're just chilling to the dub soundscapes.

We almost missed this one. So to ensure ‘In Waves’ made waves in the pages of Mixmag, we went back to it – and boy will you be glad you did, too. Lord Of The Isles, aka producer and graphic designer Neil McDonald, has been writing and producing for almost a decade, the enigmatic releases finding homes on key electronic imprints like Permanent Vacation, Phonica and Mule Music. His debut album, released via LA label ESP Institute, is fresh and spectacular. McDonald says an early fascination with Scottish history inspired his moniker, as well as being dragged around the Highlands by his parents as a young child. Those trips clearly made an impact on him, because ‘In Waves’ is laced with beautiful chord progressions and colours as bright as tartan. He seems to be as in touch with nature as he is with percussion and quirky melodies, as demonstrated by the sound of waves washing over pianos on the title track. Its 15 tracks are the epitome of otherworldly electronic sophistication and yes, for the most part they’re as Balearic as a classic DJ Harvey disco re-edit. Certain tracks stick out: the glitchy Balearic bounce of ‘Liobasta’ is an early highlight, as is the smooth cinematic touch of ‘Obar Lìobhaite’. The Âme/Dixon-ish bleep masterclass ‘Weh-In’ doesn’t put a foot wrong over eight scorched minutes, either, while the subtly breathtaking ‘Yanomami’ isn’t far behind. Alexander Albrecht returns to Francis Harris' Scissor & Thread imprint under his Melquí­ades guise for the Excerpts EP. As with his previous release on the label, Blue Caves, the Melbourne producer delivers a rich and affecting release, blending genres and moods with ease. 

"The idea behind this EP", says Alex Albrecht, "was to capture moments and "excerpts" of my improvised live set. I've used field recordings from a number of places from around the world as inspiration (including my recent visit to New York for the last S&T Tour) for the individual tracks - there's a variety of genres within the release but essentially they were just improvised extended jam sessions. I then chose some interesting excerpts for the record."

'Portal' kicks off the EP, a deep and woozy track with a strong groove, layered with pads and effects that radically enriches the dancefloor cut. 

'Tower Of The Sun' utilizes a similar driving beat, heavy on the hi-hats, but with a more submerged mood, punctuated with distant blasts and shards of noise. 

'Schaefer Street' also employs snappy percussion and snares, intertwined with bubbling melody and ethereal pads and washes. 

The same track is given a re-work by Patrice Scott, thickening up the groove and providing the most out-and-out dancefloor friendly track of the EP, while maintaining the fragments of deep and jazzy melody.

Italian siblings, The Robinson, deliver a mesmerising triplet of tracks on the ‘Nightmares’ EP, having popped up recently on Futureboogie’s 2020 Summer Riot IX EP.  And the FBR HQ has been all of a quiver after one of the deep house scene’s most prominent and revered figures, Ron Trent, blessed the release with a fine remix in his own inimitable style.

With only a couple of releases on RYE Records behind them, The Robinson are clearly fully formed already, as evident on ‘Burnout’, a sprawling and luscious house joint that’s replete with melodic emotion and rhythmic power.

Having been responsible for so many classic jams over the years (‘Altered States’ recorded & released at the age of 16, nuff said!).  Through his productions on the mighty Prescription Records, Peacefrog, Future Vision and so many more, Ron Trent is the epitome of classy, deep vibes, and he stamps his sound onto a fantastic remix ‘Burnout’ with elegance and grace.

In fact, the other original cuts here, ‘Nightmares’ and ‘Matrix’ owe much to the sounds honed by the likes of Ron Trent and other Chicago and Detroit pioneers, as crunchy drum machines, emotive string synths, haunting vocals and sparse yet stirring basslines are all the ingredients needed for the timeless sound and energies contained within these cuts.
