San Francisco’s Dream Chimney officially began in 2018 but its genesis goes much further back. First an electronic music project in ‘97 while experimenting on demos and late-night college radio sessions. In 2000 Dream Chimney continued as a collaborative music platform known for its passionate music community. For over 20 years DC has been a knowledgeable source exposing and sharing exciting new music discoveries. The label was born with a focus on lo-fi Balearic, new age, dance, and synth pop, with releases from Sorcerer, Memorex and Po-One, and compilations that have included Vision of Panorama, Max Essa, Trujillo, Hatchback, Rollmottle, Faint Waves and more.
 
This summer Dream Chimney welcomes Cuerpo Docente to the roster, an instrumental trio from Santiago, Chile. Drawing from backgrounds in DJing, composition, production, and improvisation, they formed in 2018 playing full improv sets in experimental dance spaces in Santiago.  Inspired by the music of Herbie Hancock, Larry Heard, King Tubby, and The Rotating Assembly, their mutual interests coalesced into a synth-based, minimalist, restrained yet playful musical landscape. In 2021 they decided to self-produce an album of original compositions and improvisations edited in a style reminiscent of Can and Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew. The result is a kaleidoscopic album that boldly features jazz, funk, dance, dub, and a multitude of leftfield sonics.

The fifth album by the Berlin band Automat pours oil on the fire. "Heat" is more homogeneous, warmer and rounder than its predecessors. Intimate dub, rich bass, scrambled delays, deep blue trip hop, deep violet down-tempo ballads, reggae / rap sparks fly here and there, all of which makes “Heat” a beautifully album.

Heat stands for a process of change: both in the line-up and for the energy and passion of the new line-up. After a longer break due to Corona, the leave of guitarist Jochen Arbeit, the entry of keyboardist Max Loderbauer and producer Ingo Krauss as well as the ingenious reinforcement by Scott Montieth (Deadbeat), singer Barbie Williams and the guests on the microphone Gemma Ray and both reggae legends Prince Alla and R Zee Jackson, the new Automat is running like a machine.

Sean La’Brooy is an Australian producer and composer cur- rently based in New York, who’s work traverses ambient, jazz and house music. He is the co-founder of Australian ambient label Analogue Attic Recordings.

With this release, La’Brooy has hooked up with the Scissor and Thread label to put out Merchant - five dreamy and versatile tracks featuring his distinct style of harmonically complex pads mixed with jazz-influenced instrumental melodies and solos.
Snow Storm starts the journey, coupling field recordings with snippets of gentle jazz lines and wandering percussion.

Cargo is the most dancefloor-oriented of the release, and locks into a driving groove early on, featuring various synth and pia- no fragments to add and flow through the track.

Pilot is a track that also finds an off-kilter groove, embellished with dubbed-out percussion by fellow Australian Joseph Batrouney and samples.

Storage too features a guest - New York based drummer Leo Yucht - who delivers a rolling breakbeat which is intertwined with live percussion, airy pads and snippets of piano to build a rich atmosphere.

The closing piece is Helipad, a dubby bassline providing the anchor for an intricate rhythm of bongos and synth to support a light-as-a-feather melody.

As Sean explains, “The purpose of this record was to create five tracks that each feel unique and distinctive from each other while still maintaining a common thread that connects them all to the same place. All my favorite records have a certain distinctiveness across each track that ties them together to create a sort of family of works. I think if you can achieve that cohesion, you’ve made a great album. With Merchant, I’ve tried my hardest to establish a unique identity while featuring 5 tracks that feel totally different at the same time. Different con- cepts, genres, tempos, instrumentation, still with a red thread to connect them all. In my mind, those commonalities are defined by a particular mood or sentiment, the use of playful melodies, and a reliance on acoustic rhythms throughout”.
