September brought an avalanche of new music as artists and labels unleashed a wave of releases that had been building up during the slower summer months. Among the highlights is our third offering on Never Late, a mesmerizing IDM journey by the multi-disciplinary artist Tensen Park. Meanwhile, Konduku and Amenthia Recordings deepen their creative partnership with Slowworm, a polyrhythmic, mind-bending EP that showcases their evolving synergy.

Sciama finds an ideal platform for his evocative and powerful album Collapse Of Order on the fresh imprint OODA. At the same time, Jamie McCue of Silent Season launches Moon Garden, a dub-oriented label, with a new release from Hidden Sequence. Soela’s latest album, Dark Portrait on Scissor & Thread, marks a sophisticated statement, featuring collaborations with Francis Harris, Lawrence, Philipp Priebe, and Module One.

Rrose and Polygonia join forces on Dermatology, a mini-album blending rhythmically adventurous grooves and industrial textures. UK-based label Kinetic introduces 5rvz’s debut EP, Trench, where sharp-edged percussions meet brooding halftime rhythms. From Spain, YDVST crafts a 10-track ambient exploration, Atelier Silencio, for the Shimmering Moods imprint, weaving delicate melodies and subtle drones.

Amsterdam’s nthng returns with the Two People EP, bringing his signature emotive style to the fore. London’s Osmunda closed out the month with a solid six-track compilation featuring standout contributions from Atomic Moog and Caldera, among others. From introspective ambient and emotive deep house to driving techno and hypnotic halftime, September’s offerings reveal the spectrum of electronic music in all its intricate brilliance.

Electronic music heavyweight Martin Roth will release his second full-length, piano-led album ‘Mono No Aware’ on Reflections, the new sister label of Anjunadeep. Roth is well-known for his ability to glide between genres while maintaining a distinct, instantly-identifiable style, and his new release is no exception. With this 13-track album, Roth moves away from the club space and into his classical pianist background to explore themes of impermanence, fatherhood and simplicity.

Roth prefers to describe the album as minimalistic rather than ambient with each track stripped back to create space for one leading sound, instrument or melody. This results in an immersive listening experience, and instead of being pulled in multiple directions, we’re gently led to wherever Roth wants us to go.

This skill reflects the depth and breadth of Roth’s production experience. He learnt piano from a young age and bought his first synthesizer in his late teens. Around the same time he dived headfirst into Frankfurt’s underground, spending his weekends submerged in the sounds and selections of Sven Väth and Culture Beat’s Torsten Fenslau at institutions like Omen and Dorian Gray. When Roth began playing local clubs, Frankfurt’s melancholic influence impacted his music and has remained ever since, regardless which genre he’s turned his hand to.

‘Mono No Aware’ is the second album released on Reflections, and is a further exploration of Roth’s analog past. Martin released his first low-tempo LP ‘An Analog Guy In A Digital World’ in 2020 and says it’s no coincidence his two full-length albums are classical-leaning. His emotions pour out his hands and into the piano, and ‘Mono No Aware’ is an amalgamation of these stories and experiences. He began the writing process in mid-2021 while the world was still under COVID’s thumb, and says lockdown in Germany was the perfect backdrop to write an album steeped in melancholia. The nostalgia and impermanence even extends to the name – ‘Mono No Aware’ is a Japanese phrase which translates to ‘an awareness that everything fades away.’

Roth’s ambition for ‘Mono No Aware’ is that it touches the listener in the same way his first album did. “When I released An Analog Guy In A Digital World, suddenly I received messages from people all over the world,” Roth says. “They were long, heartfelt, heartbreaking messages, about how a certain track supported them through the hardest moments of their lives. The people who write these messages have no idea how much they are supporting me, so I hope the music on Mono No Aware touches people in the same way.”

Soela is the DJ and production alias of Elina Shorokhova, a Russia-born Berlin-based experienced pianist and vocalist who has made a hugely impactful transition into electronic music.

Having released material on such labels as Kompakt, Dial, Shall Not Fade, Lost Palms, E-Beamz, Red Ember Records, Sushitech, and others, Soela joins the ranks of Scissor & Thread for this exquisite album - Dark Portrait. 

The album opens in a typically understated manner with Unsuitable - a melancholic trip-hop adjacent track that sets the tone for the next 8 pieces. As Soela explains, “I was dealing with some very complex feelings, so I came up with this album, which helped me not to despair, to work on myself, to grow internally, and to start listening to myself. It helped me to keep sane when my country invaded Ukraine with a full scale war. It absolutely broke my heart, and music was one of my main salvations.” 

This complex mix of emotions plays out across the album with tracks that utilize her beautiful musicality (Through the Windows feat. Francis Harris and Philipp Priebe, Drowning feat. Module One) and ear for details with skittering beats, ambient soundscapes (Spirits, Lost In The Fog) and lose-yourself dancefloor moments such as the collaboration with Lawrence on February Is Not Going To Be Forever. The title track Dark Portrait combines dubby elements with affecting pads and melodic touches, while the lead single Even If I Ask You Stay delves into multiple feelings around escaping toxic situations, and battling depression. It features a powerful vocal from Soela supported by a deeply affecting arrangement. The closing track The Darkest Hour Before Sunrise brings a sense of hope and light, balancing subdued keys and strings with ethereal tones and atmospheres

Close your eyes, take a deep breath & allow your mind to bring you on a journey to a far away land. When your eyes open, you appear inside of a lush yet strangely digital landscape, billions of years into the past where the planet is overflowing with a myriad of the most unusual plants & animals. You find yourself comforted by the natural serenity of it all, the lack of human influence on the world around you. Submerged in the depths of cool, dense, mysterious jungles, interrupted only by the occasional river snaking through the trees. You trek across the most vivid of green mountains & through deep valleys that are peppered with crystal clear blue waters from the melted glaciers of a past ice age. It’s just the slightest bit familiar yet there is not a human in sight. A delicate shimmering coats the surface of everything you see. It’s as if you are in a dreamlike, artificial state of consciousness. This is the world of Tensen Park’s ‘Jurassimo’.

The Amsterdam-based producer takes you on an introspective ride through 4 dubby, ambient & IDM-adjacent tracks, each with a cool wash of crispy effervescence & crystalline ear candy. The music is full of so much beautiful detail which sounds as if it was performed in an improvisational manner. There is a meticulousness & attention to detail that is heard throughout yet everything somehow sounds unpretentious & flows naturally. The EP closes with a 5th track which is a wonderfully crunchy & upbeat rework from friend & occasional collaborator Imnop.

Konduku's appearance on Amenthia feels like something that happened a long time ago, but with 'Slowworm,' he officially makes his label debut, delivering three solo works that solidify his close relationship with the pioneering Basel crew.

'Slowworm' includes three mesmerizing, slow-paced, tension-building mind trips that are a perfect fit for Amenthia. It's an excellent showcase of impeccable rhythms, morphing from sludgy slow beats to introverted intensity--a style for which both Konduku and Amenthia are celebrated.

Konduku's tracks have been a staple in the Amenthia crew's setlists for years. In addition to creating the 2022 release 'Glimmer' by Konsudd, a project with Aa Sudd; and contributing a track on the latest Amenthia x A Walking Contradiction collaboration EP; the partnership has generated a close friendship along the way.
