ZG is the moniker of London based Zansika Lachhani and Grant (aka Anthony Collins, and the Tony in Frank & Tony). Their upcoming de- but-album ZG is set for a release in November and was borne out of a connection online, as Grant and Zan connected on Soundcloud, both independently vibing off each other's music and approach to their art.

Jungle Times sets the scene for the album with an atmospheric, ambient opening giving way to a wonky breakbeat and whispered vocals from Zan. It sets the tone perfectly, pitching the sound equally between London and New York.

ZG is the moniker of London based Zansika Lachhani and Grant (aka Anthony Collins, and the Tony in Frank & Tony). The concept  was borne out of a connection online, as Grant and Zan connected on Soundcloud, both independently vibing off each other's music and approach to their art. 
 
In 2018 they began to work together, developing a number of tracks but eventually parking the project as other life commitments got in the way. Fast forward to 2021, while clearing out old harddrives, Grant rediscovered the recordings and was blown away by the music already put down. Together they began to rework and develop the project further, resulting in a blindingly beautiful  seven track LP. 
 
Opener Jungle Times sets the scene, an atmospheric dreamy opening giving way to an idiosyncratic breakbeat and whispered vocals from Zan, setting the tone perfectly, floating the sound equally between London and New York styles. Following it up is the enigmatic Roll of Thunder, drawing its power broken beat patterns, deep and soulful strings and washes reminiscent of 4Hero in their prime. 
When Young also brings a jazz aesthetic to the fore, with upfront drums and Rhodes chords washing over in melodic bliss. Ombre starts with a thick bassline and urgent synth stabs before developing into a tripped-out groove, layered with thick synth lines and subtle harmonic touches. Similarly, Aura uses some of the same sound palette as well with touches of guitars and more sparking pads creating an uplifting yet melancholic journey. The first real vocal arrives with the penultimate track Dog Days, dreamily layered over  beautifully evolving synth washes and skittering beats. By the time Drift Out arrives to usher in the last act of this exceptional LP, we are on cloud nine.

In addition to references to the times of freedom, ups and downs, everything here is imbued with unconditional love for music: there are remixes of soul-funk legends, gentle as whipped cream, jazzy house, intricate minimal abstractions and much more. SBat - Subterra - Live at Upsidedown 17.06.23

This set was recorded live on the night opening from 11pm - 1am for Subterra, something I hope will become a regular thing in Osaka (and hopefully Tokyo). It was a truly amazing night to be a part of and something I spent a lot of time thinking about and getting records together that I hoped I could piece together on the night to suck people in and set the scene for DJ Morita, Lene Andreasen and yu1 (who all played amazingly). The mix is of course a bit rough around the edges, a couple of times I zigged when I planned to zag but hopefully that adds to the charm and the journey as a whole is one you'll enjoy. I know I certainly enjoyed being there and listening back to it brings back memories of what was an incredible night that I won't soon forget.

I went back through the mix trying to piece together the tracklist so hopefully others can go forth and find more stuff by all of the amazing artists on there. I think I got them all but apologies if I missed/messed up!

Following on from a number of releases on Pulp, Downbeat, Urban Imagery and the “Discover You” EP on Scissor & Thread, here is Nature Of Reality, the single taken from DaRand Land’s second album Wander Being, released on Scissor & Thread in late November 2024. 





“In particular, the single, The Nature of Reality”, says DaRand, “was written to convey a sense of what it feels like to be in a state of suspended animation. There is a natural tension introduced via the organic, swirling pad progression juxtaposed against endless vocal echoes and the low-end groove of the bassline. Thematically, I wanted to carry this forward through the entirety of the album.”

Teaming up once again with Scissors and Thread - the perfect fit for his sound - DaRand Land drops an album full of crafty, trippy house for the heads. Wander Being contains 10 tracks on the double vinyl release with a pair of additional tracks for the digital release. The vibe is deep and sleek, with a rough, bumping edge. The title track sets the tone, a smattering of percussion accompanying a thick, round kick drum and Rhodes chords, giving off a classic Detroit feel. Tracks like Turn to The Music ramp up the energy somewhat, but overall the tracks sit in the sweet spot between dancefloor burners and soulful, jazzy, deep cuts. 

Noticeable is the space given to each element across the tracks - the hi-hats sparkle, the snare snaps, and the basslines roll and rumble. Add to this the magic melodic flourishes provided by the pads and synths, reminiscent of the late Mike Huckaby in places, made this whole album a thoughtful, joyful experience.

Principally, through the exclusive use of hardware components, minimalist arrangement, and a minds-eye approach to source the musical elements. DaRand Land - At The Feeling Level

Berlin-based up-and-comer and epitome of the vibrant house scene over in the German capital, Max Graef, came to the states for his debut tour, stopping by in NYC not only to play a nutty LPH night at Output's Panther Room, but also to pop into the Red Bull studio to record an episode of LPH Radio.

We've heard from afar that Graef has a penchant for zigzagging all over the place and sprinkling his sets with jazz, hip-hop, reggae, classical, and more unexpected-for-his-audience nuggets. If maintaining that trend makes him predictable, well then he's a very predictable man indeed!

He started things off, but, a little ways in, his partner in crime over at CTEPEO '57, Emil Nyholm, a.k.a. Muff Deep, stepped in and they tag-teamed from then on.

This is a fantastic and stimulating mix; it's perfect for Mondays, but we're also sure it'll do the trick anytime on any other day of the week as well. Strap in for a beautiful journey.
