Since bursting onto the scene in 2010 with huge support from the likes of Laurent Garnier, John Digweed and Dave Clarke, Ireland’s Ian O'Donovan has gone on to achieve great feats as an artist. Ian has forged a unique style within the techno scene, blending a touch of the past with his melodic sound and moulding it into place with top level production. His tracks have found homes on iconic imprints such as Kevin Saunderson's KMS in Detroit, John Digweed's burgeoning Bedrock Records, Christian Smith's Tronic and Sasha's Last Night on Earth label.
Ian has reworked classics like Inner City's 'Good Life' and collaborated with legends like John Digweed along with a string of top solo releases, which have won favour with industry titans like Richie Hawtin and Carl Cox. After standout early releases on Detone and KMS, 2015 sees Ian O'Donovan's stock once more on the rise, fuelled further by the signing of inimitable techno cut 'Vortex' to Adam Beyer's global phenomenon Drumcode Records; an indication that this timeless producer is only now entering his stride. With an arsenal of dance-floor weapons developed over a decade by his side, Ian is committed to bringing his dj sets to the world, taking music lovers on an intricate journey both into the artist’s mind and to a place of musical inspiration. With ’Skyn’ Ian debuts on Exploited Ghetto - a melodic tropical house affair. ’The Step’ on the flip is straight 4 to the floor techno business.

Ian O'Donovan - The Step | Exploited Ghetto

Aus Music follow up a string of records from fresh signees Paul Woolford, Tom Trago and Recloose with the return of a long term friend and label favourite Marquis Hawkes. Hot on the heels of his recent LP ‘Social Housing’ - the Berlin based artist lines up ‘Doornroosje’, a tight a two-tracker that remains consistent with his output on Aus: dancefloor-focused jams suffused with simplicity and soul.

‘Discopuss’ kicks things off with a potent combination of samples and hardware as sassy Funk samples are propelled by tough crunching drums. The title track then follows up with piano stabs and busy, percolating synth lines driven at a pacy rate to rapturous effect rounding off another solid addition to Aus Music’s catalogue.

Synonymous with Detroit, Techno, and Tresor, Scan 7 have remained protagonists of the Berlin-Detroit axis since it was first forged in the sweaty obsidian of the club’s original Wertheim vault home. Now, over 20 years later, the masked techno collective pay tribute to the triptych’s matted histories on ‘The Resistance EP’.

With identifiable nods to Scan 7’s Underground Resistance affiliations – the label that launched the group, and whose militaristic and political philosophies can be found littered throughout their discography – the EP begins with quintessential Detroit strings and groove before delving into darker techno territory. On the A-side, “The Resistance” offers an uplifting and delightfully nostalgic jaunt through dance music past, using all those favourite and immortal house tropes to deliver instant gratification. Meanwhile, the B-side shows off Scan 7 as masters of warm, yet shadowy techno – plus their trademark drum work – in the hypnotic “Why Not?” and driving, basement-ready “In & Out Of The Groove”. 

Alongside many outings on Tresor’s renowned compilation series, Scan 7 produced two albums for the label – ‘Dark Territory’ in 1996, followed up by ‘Resurfaced’ in 1999 – before leader TrackMasta Lou’s Cratesavers Muzik took over as the group’s primary recording outlet. ‘The Resistance EP’ is a welcomed return to Tresor from one of its stalwart artists, and paves the way for a retrospective compilation on 20 years of Scan 7, due out at the close of the year.

Slovenian DJ and producer Umek has released Vibrancy, the second EP in as many months on his own 1605 label, out 31st May.

The weighty, three-track release comes off the back of April’s 19119, and sees the veteran artist combine a tougher techno sound with more emotive, melodic elements. The EP’s title track is the clearest example of this, with a pounding kick-drum making way for a groove-laden breakdown halfway through. ‘Acid Rain’ is a heavier proposition, a full acid workout that harks back to Umek’s rave-era beginnings. Loosening off somewhat, closing track ‘Constellations’ is underpinned by a steady, measured groove.
   
"Vibrancy" is evidence of a versatile artist capable of pairing emotional melodies with the heaviest of techno beats, and is out 31st May via 1605.
