Hiraeth doesn't have a single, perfect English translation. It is usually translated as "homesickness" but It has a greater meaning. It captures a deep, bittersweet feeling of longing and nostalgia that goes beyond simply missing a place or person. It encompasses a sense of melancholy and wistfulness for a past that can't be recaptured. Hiraeth as a concept has many facets to its' essence, such as a person who has moved away from their hometown and feels homesick for it, one who has lost a loved one and feels a deep sense of longing for them, a person who is nostalgic for their childhood and wishes they could go back in time, a person who is deeply connected to their culture and feels a sense of loss when they see it changing, a person who is passionate about a particular hobby or interest and feels a sense of loss when they can no longer pursue it, an individual who is deeply connected to nature and feels a sense of loss when they see it being destroyed. Some also say it is a longing for memories never had, places never visited, and a time never experienced.

This song is about me processing and moving forward in life from things, people, and situations I have no influence and control over, and letting go of that notion. It's about finding something and someone new to build your life with, from the rubble and pain of past hurts, broken relationships, promises, and friendships, regrets, deaths of this you love or cared about, and the lessons learned. It's about reminding yourself that you need to stay grounded in the storm, and that this too like the seasons, will pass.
