Oh, this is incredible, this is an excellent musical card to express your appreciation to a friend! I will say more, I have captured your insightful, profound expression of love for your friend in this set of nostalgic musical themes. Here is a true, sensual filling with moral love and without a judgemental mentality, in which we strive to choose a friend as if they were a second soul, a life companion who shares our entire existence in our microcosm.  I was deeply moved and delighted by how perfectly Balearic music is suited to expressing feelings, as it is imbued with our full moments in life.!

London-born and Tokyo-based, Max Essa has spent over two decades crafting lush, melodic soundscapes that blur the lines between balearic, cosmic disco, and ambient pop. Emerging in the '90s on Warp and Paper Recordings, he found his true artistic stride after relocating to Japan in 2008. Since then, Essa has become a central figure in Tokyo’s underground scene, curating events like Zim Zam Zu! at Bar Bonobo and releasing music on labels such as Music For Dreams, Hell Yeah!, and Is It Balearic?

Essa’s style is warm, escapist, and deeply cinematic-often inspired by specific places: Okinawan beaches, Mediterranean ferries, or late-night Tokyo rooftops. His releases, like Lanterns, When I'm Homeward Bound, and The Clean Trip (with David Harks), radiate nostalgia and serenity, wrapped in silky synths and timeless grooves.

Beyond producing, Essa curates, mentors, and connects cultures-compiling Japanese ambient gems on Oto No Wa, together with Ken Hidaka and Dr Rob, and spotlighting local artists through interviews and collaborations. Whether on record or behind the decks, Max Essa invites listeners into a world where emotion, space, and memory guide the rhythm.

This one is for my best mate - someone who’s been in my life for more than thirty years. Ade’s asked me for a mix for ages, but I think I needed all that time just to choose which tracks to put on the damn thing, as he loves music as much as me and wanted to give a spread of the music we both love.

It’s a little tribute to the life we’ve lived together - the adventures, the heavy conversations, the times we held each other up (him, more than me), and the countless moments that somehow stitched our lives together.

There aren’t many people you grow alongside in this world. Ade is one of them. Someone who’s seen every version of me and never flinched. Someone I love like a brother, and someone I’ll always stand by.

This is for everything we’ve been through, and everything still ahead of us.
