We're very excited to bring you the second instalment of The Sunrise Mixtapes, and our first guest-mix: None other than Mr Phil Mison! 

A chance meeting with José Padilla at London's Milk Bar lead to a two-season DJ residency at the iconic Café Del Mar in Ibiza in the mid nineties. Phil continues to produce and tour the world. A true champion of the Balearic scene, we were thrilled that he said Yes when we reached out to ask if he’d like to contribute to the series, especially seeing as the mix he’s submitted is a very special live recording of a set he did at the Café Del Mar back in August 1994. It’s a simply gorgeous selection of white-Isle classics and oddities, including ‘Mediterranean Dream’ by Shahin & Sepehr, ‘Voodoo Jammin’ by Dancing Fantasy and ‘Yawn Yawn Yawn’ by Sth Notional, just to mention a handful as there are so many great records in this mix - Seminal music from the golden age of chill.

Phil Mison - Café Del Mar Ibiza '94 mix

For those who’ve been following my Burnout Sumner adventures for a while now, this might sound familiar. Every three years, I drop a pretty extended mix dedicated to that special kind of Balearic house music bliss that continues to be a major part of my life, despite all the personal changes that have happened since the last edition. So here we are with Volume III: “An Escape to Balearic Paradise.”

Expect an almost three-hour-long journey into a tropical dreamscape, carefully curated by yours truly. It’s a sun-drenched selection of my favorite tracks from this magical musical realm, collected since the 2022 edition. You'll find familiar faces like DJ Koze, Space Ghost, and Joe Goddard, alongside hidden gems from Desert Island Disco, Lars Bartkuhn, Barbara Boeing, and Conga Fever: the forgotten alias of Tom Hessler aka Der Assistent. One personal highlight: Sofia Kourtesis’ dreamy remix of Perel’s Matrix, a track I still get goosebumps from. Also included is an Alex Kassian rework-slash-tribute to Michael Göttsching’s iconic E2-E4 from 1981, which still feels like the spiritual blueprint for this entire genre.

But let’s not get lost in name-dropping - because in the end, this mix is all about the vibe. It’s an invitation to slow down, to breathe deeply, to let your mind wander over imaginary coastlines. Maybe you’ll find yourself dancing barefoot in golden sunlight, or drifting into twilight with a soft breeze brushing your skin. This is a soundtrack for summer days and balmy nights, a celebration of warmth, serenity, and musical escapism - and honestly, don’t we all need a little more of that right now? Paris-based producer KX9000 (Kerim Ben Mustapha) crafts a vibrant fusion of electro-funk, space disco, jazz, and house. With roots in jazz-funk bands and a background in sound engineering, he brings a DIY, hands-on ethos to his music. His EPs on labels like Pont Neuf Records, LW Recordings or Apparel Music showcase a playful yet meticulous style - where vintage synths, live instruments, and city-pop textures meet club-ready grooves. Collaborations with Nic Hanson, Corsica One, and others enrich his soulful, eclectic sound. A staple of Paris clubs and European festivals, KX9000 draws inspiration from icons like Dexter Wansel and blends spontaneous jamming with refined production. His latest work, Dream Log, evokes both movement and introspection - perfect for late-night drives or packed dancefloors. A true “alchemist” of the modern French electronic scene.

We can’t deny it anymore, friends… The summer season entered its final stage and that is a time that tends to always make me a bit melancholic. Luckily I’m not the only one who feels that way and for those of you who need some musical comfort, I got just the right Messy Mix for you, delivered by a true hero of mine - Mr. @joemorris from Leeds.

Joe has been an essential figure in the contemporary Balearic house and electronica scene, running the great label Shades Of Sound Records with plenty of sweet releases in that field, including his own ones. He released a new album called “Some Kind of Paradise” this summer which I enjoyed during the warmer days of the season. It’s a wonderful selection of 90s trip hop, downtempo, and modern Balearic electronica and I love it. Same goes for his monthly radio show on “Loose FM”... needless to say - I’m a huge fan and I kindly recommend you to check out his Soundcloud as soon as possible.

So, obviously I’m very thrilled to have Joe on board for this laidback new Messy Mix which goes by the title “Last Rays Of Summer.” According to him this set is a “collection of moods and sound palettes to compliment the last rays of summer as they melt into the first shafts of autumnal light.” And yeah, it definitely transports that atmosphere in a very warm and wonderful way. It makes that whole transitional process a lot easier and I hope you’ll enjoy this soothing selection of music as much as I do.
