AN INTERVIEW WITH SCOTT ALLEN // SOUL DEEP RECORDINGS

A few weeks back FOKUS’s ‘CeeFour’ caught up with SOUL DEEP head honcho Scott Allen to find out a little about his labels, his projects and discuss the state of Drum and Bass in USA. Since SOUL DEEP’s inception in JANUARY 2011, the imprint has seen a great amount of success and has been established as one of the top LIQUID/DEEP/JAZZY labels in the music game. He has also more recently set up SOUL REBEL, a label more focussed on the Jungle/ Reggae/ Dub side of Drum&Bass.

Scott, could you tell us a little bit about your labels and what you have set out to achieve with them?

I began Soul Deep Recordings about 3 years ago. I started the label with Deeper Connection as an outlet for the Liquid sound that we loved. We felt like there was a void in the market for a label of our style and we began releasing quality music that attracted fans worldwide. After about a year and a half, Deeper Connection decided to leave the label to focus on his own production and deejay career, leaving me in charge of Soul Deep. The label has continued to grow and release quality D&B in a digital and vinyl format and will continue to do so for years to come. My vision for Soul Deep is to eventually create club nights around the globe that feature Soul Deep music and artists who perform for fans of the SDR sound.

About a year ago, I started a label with Marco (Fokuz, Celsius, Influenza) called Soul Rebel Recordings. We teamed up and started the label to help push the Reggae, Dub, and Jungle sound that we both had a passion for. The label releases some of the finest music in these genres in a digital and vinyl format for the deejays of all platforms. Since I have a deep love for Reggae/Dub music it was an easy decision for me to start the label. When I reached out to Marco about teaming up to run the label he told me he had the same idea. The label is headed for big things for sure.
Recently, I started a new sub label of Soul Deep Recordings, called Soul Deep Exclusives. I started the new sub label to release the Soul Deep vinyl songs as digital releases. Also, I’ve hand picked some of the most influential artists to release music on the label.

What first attracted you to the production style of Liquid DnB for you to concentrate on production of that style?

In the early 2000’s I was attracted to the releases from Fokuz Recordings and other influential labels of the era. I was always drawn to music that was deep, had punchy steady drums, and often included lush vocals with sweeping efx. The basslines also attracted me to the sounds of liquid D&B. I was always drawn to the edgy, modulating, and deep sounds of the Liquid D&B basslines. When combined with deep synths and other complimentary sounds, it makes the perfect combination.

What was your first introduction to making music, djing or otherwise?

I was introduced to electronic music in 1992 when I moved to L.A. to attend college. The friends I met at school introduced me to techno/hardcore breaks and it was love at first listen. After about one year of listening to the music and attending weekly club events my friends and I decided to buy our own set of turntables. I started making mix tapes immediately and received a club gig about a week after getting the turntables. One of my friends was listening to the tape in her car and she just happened to have a club promoter in her car. He liked the mix and ended up booking me for my first gig. Things picked up when I met a local record store owners, Simply Jeff and Ron D. Core. They began putting out my mix tapes selling them in their store. They also paid to have my first vinyl release pressed and released world wide. I have an old, obscure breakbeat 12” out that I’m a little embarrased about now, but it was a part of the growing process. I deejayed and produced breakbeat music and toured the country during the 90’s and early 2000’s. In the early 2000’s I found the Progression Session mix series and fell in love with atmospheric/jazzy/deep D&B. I started producing and deejaying D&B music and never looked back.

Apart from DnB in its varied forms, what other styles of music do you listen to? Do they influence your productions at all?

I’m a huge Reggae and Dub fan. I have an extensive vinyl and CD collection full of classic and obscure reggae releases from 1974-1985. I like some of the “modern” reggae, but I’m more selective when it comes to the newer reggae sound. Other than Reggae, I also enjoy downtempo music. I’m a big fan of Thievery Corporation and find myself playing their albums over and over in my car. Growing up, my biggest passion was hip-hop music. I used to listen to rap everyday and take the 30 minute trip into Seattle every week to buy the newest releases to feed my soul. Alternative Rock has also been a genre that I’ve listened to over the years. I went through a phase where I was listening to a lot of the old Bloc Party albums and Interpol albums. Also, from doing so much crate digging, I’ve developed a passion for old Soul music. I would say that I’m definitely influenced by my love for these different genres of music. It doesn’t take long to hear the influence of Dub music in my tunes. Most of my songs feature organic sounding echo efx that remind me of the vintage era of Dub from the early 1980’s.

What’s the best gig you have played so far. In terms of sound system, venue or crowd response?

One of my more recent gigs called “Timeless” has been one of the best I’ve played. The club venue was filled with hardcore D&B fans that appreciated the Liquid D&B sounds. The sound system was great, and I was able to open for and hear Total Science play right after my set. It was a very memorable night.

We seem to see a lot of Liquid producers from USA, is that because other styles of DnB are not as well received on that side of the pond?

In my experience, the harder, edgier D&B tunes tend to draw the bigger crowds in the States. Also, I’ve been to events with Dubstep deejays that are packed and going off. Liquid D&B is an up and coming genre, and it’s one of my goals to help bring it to the forefront of the L.A. scene.

Where do you see yourself progressing to next, what goals have you set yourself?

I’d like to begin deejaying more frequently. The gig bookings have definitely picked up a lot lately, but I’d like to play all over the world and help push the Soul Deep sound. I hope make it over to Europe for a tour by next year, but I’m always really busy with my real job as a teacher and coach. Time is always hard to come by, but now is the time to make the trip. As far as my producing goes, I know I still have a lot to learn. I’m all self taught and I know I’ve just scratched the surface of what I’m capable of learning. I’d like to keep growing the Soul Deep brand and put out more physical releases in the future. I live pretty close to Hollywood, so one of my BIG long term goals is to hear one of my songs, or a song from my label in a major motion picture soundtrack.

Do you have any interesting projects or collaborations in the pipeline?

I have about 5 more songs forthcoming on Good Looking. One of the tracks, a collaboration with Jrumhand, “Love So True”, is set to come out on a GLR 12” by the end of the year. Four of the tracks set for release on GLR are solo songs called, “Dreaming of Darkness, “Everlasting”, “Borsalino” (Remix), and “Soul Complex”. Also, I have an EP set for Soul Deep Exclusives that features collab tunes with talented producers j:logic, and Blade. I have a 12” release set for Fokuz that should be available by the end of the year. Another interesting project I’m working on is a mix CD project with a special guest emcee adding his lyrical flavor over the mix.

And finally, is there any news on any upcoming gigs or releases that people can check out?

It looks like I’ll be playing a gig at Respect in L.A. in November. Also, I’ll be playing a club gig with Place 42 in L.A. in November. I’m tentatively planning a European tour for June, 2014. I’ve never been to Europe before and it’s time for that to change. I’ve been invited by LTJ Bukem to play at Fabric, so I need to make the trip happen. Also, I’ve been invited to play at a club in Switzerland, so I’m planning the trip for when I’m off from work during the summer.

The Insiders hail from Bristol, a city that practically bleeds drum & bass. Producing and DJing as a duo, Ben Payne and Joe Wills have been making, releasing and playing deep d&b for over a decade now, running their own club night and operating the Intrigue Music label to house their productions. The Insiders’ sound has caught the attention of a lot of heads over their breadth of their career with their productions featuring on labels like Metalheadz, Creative Source, 31 Records and Renegade Hardware. Joining us on Friday 28th November to play alongside LTJ Bukem, Fabio and a special set from A Guy Called Gerald, they’ve kindly put together a promotional mix to help introduce their flavour ahead of their journey to London next week.

- Can you speak a bit about the Indivision group?
- We started out as a trio, but for quite awhile I've been handling everything alone, Kaarel is still a member though but at the moment he is serving his mandatory 11 month time in the Estonian Army. 
- What was the first dnb track which you've ever heard and why would you like to become a producer?
- The Upbeats - View from the Inside. It sounded so awesome at the time. I had quit track & field, so needed something else in my life. I started out with any knowledge of how to write or produce music. In the beginning I spoke English at a basic level (thanks to music it has improved quite a bit). 
- What's your inspiration?
- My inspiration is the life itself, prolly clichee, but this is how it is. Everything I feel, see and affects me in life - it's all in the tracks from cycling till women.
- What's your plan for this year?
- I have an album dropping out this year, it's called 'Mirakuru'. 'Mirakuru' is featured in the mix aswell. In Japanese it means 'Miracle', the name came from a TV show called 'Arrow'. Also, I have lined-up a release on Liquicity.
I hope I can play in many European countries this year, such as Germany, Belgium, Austria and the UK.

Scott grew up in Seattle, Washington (USA), and was a big music lover at a young age. At 10 years old, he fell in love with new wave music and the synth-driven tunes of the early 80’s. A couple of years later, he began a new passion, collecting Hip-Hop music. 

When Scott was 18 years old, he moved to the L.A. area to attend college and play water polo at Chapman University. When he moved into his dorm room he met his future deejay partner and Neosoul band partner, Tim Andren. Scott and Tim would spend hours talking about music and seeing who could supply the best, most underground Hip-Hop tune with the most addictive beats and sounds. During this period in his life, Scott was introduced to Breakbeat, Hardcore Breaks, early Jungle, and Ambient Dub Music. Scott immediately fell in love with the overall feel and freedom of the music.

At about the age of 21, Scott and his roommates bought their first set of turntables and the passion for the music grew into an intense love. About 2 weeks after he bought his turntables, he was already circulating his mix tapes and getting booked to play at clubs and parties in L.A. After a year or two of playing local shows, Scott began playing shows all over the USA and Canada, exposing these areas to the Neosoul breakbeat sound. He was fortunate enough to play alongside such heavy-hitting acts as DJ Dan, Donald Glaude, Bassbin Twins, Simply Jeff, and many other big names.

When the breakbeat scene slowed down around 2001, Scott went back to his roots in electronic music and began enjoying the sounds of Jungle music, only now the music was more refined. He began to go to Drum & Bass events and would catch LTJ Bukem & Conrad, and the rest of the Good Looking crew every time they would perform in the Southern California area. He was drawn to the melodic, jazzy, and ethereal sounds of Drum & Bass music, and he especially liked it with Conrad hypnotically weaving his lyrics over the tunes. He began collecting Drum & Bass records and also started producing Drum & Bass in about 2004. It was also around this time that Scott further developed his passion for Reggae and Dub music. You can definitely hear the influence that these genres of music have had in his music.

His production became more serious when people started hearing his songs and began to show interest in wanting more of his sound. After a few years of producing and getting a number of tracks signed to major labels, Scott decided to start his own label, Soul Deep Recordings. Since Soul Deep’s inception in January 2011, the label has seen a great amount of success and has been established as one of the top Liquid/Deep/Jazzy labels in the music game. 

In addition to releasing many EP’s on Soul Deep, Scott has released music on a number of other top labels including, Fokuz, Celsius, Good Looking, Smooth N Groove, Telluric, Celsius, Soul Rebel, Jazzsticks, Phuzion, Liquid V, Atmomatix and Sheer Velocity. Currently, Scott keeps himself busy pushing the record label and playing shows as often as he can. You can follow Scott on Social Media to keep up to date with his releases.
