Hardkiss have produced a new album that stands tall in the often repetitive world of electronic dance music. Named for the year the Hardkiss collective was formed, 1991 references the sounds and sentiments of their early rave days while exploring new musical directions.  
 
Recorded in San Rafael, California, the album took shape in two home studios that are separated by a hillside hike. Most of the songs feature Robbie Hardkiss on vocals with additional vocals by Austin’s Tameca Jones and New York rapper turned singer, Scavonne.   
 
To facilitate the release of singles and remixes, Hardkiss reached out to other labels.
 
San Diego’s Siesta Records have already released remixes of REVOLUTION by Rong Music’s DJ Spun, Sleazy McQueen, Atnarko and Adam Warped. This Spring, they will release Hardkiss remixes of REVOLUTION including a classic Scott Hardkiss remix. Scott’s mix was unfinished at the time of his passing. Gavin and Robbie got the audio files from Scott’s Brooklyn studio and completed an emotional remix in San Francisco. Elements of all three Hardkiss mixes were used to create 1991’s opening track, REVOLUTION (Hardkiss Brothers Mix).
 
Austin label Whiskey Pickle is releasing the single RETROACTIVE-FUTURISTIC-PSYCHEDELIC-FUNK-BUMP with remixes by Hawke, Q-Burns Abstract Message and James Curd of Greenskeepers.
 
Wishing to remain connected to their vinyl roots, Hardkiss has also partnered with UnCut Records to manufacture limited edition double vinyl records of the album 1991. The records (including an mp3 download code) are available along with special N.I.C.E. Collective designed t-shirts and flags on the Hardkiss website.

True story: Q-Burns Abstract Message once DJ'ed underneath a weighty chainsaw covered in disco ball mirror squares, rotating roundly with silver beams flying off its blade. Imagine such a devious device honed for dance-floor devastation, its rumble tuned to bass-bin frequencies as its saw cuts through beats and melody. But we're talking about a chainsaw wielded by beardy types, waving its mirror ball excess over sunrise-stroked beach sand. We blissfully believe this could be the sound of the "Balearic Chainsaw."The original "Balearic Chainsaw" is an extended, beefier version of what was previously found on the "Chainsaw" single, released spring 2011 on EIGHT-TRACKS. The piano-fueled, flamenco guitar-kissed version was hidden as the last song in the single. To our surprise, friends and foes alike asked for a longer version to send resonating over the waterfront. The requests have been answered, and this new version features an added groove coda that should send your neighbors dancing into the moon beams.

Who else could be more perfect for such flights of fancy than our long-time chum Scott Hardkiss? Coming off the brilliant Technicolor Dreamer album on his own God Within label, Scott tackled "Balearic Chainsaw" with a combination of gusto and happenstance. His mix is a rising force, solid rhythms and huggable bass lines anchoring a building swarm of piano, guitar, and cosmic, acid atmosphere. Not content with such mere musical coolness, Scott enlisted the gorgeous vocal contribution of Stevvi Alexander to further the "Balearic Chainsaw" message. Uplifting ain't the half of it. Then there's Scott's remarkable Dub variation. Wild swirls of sound take control of this special version, aided by the unexpected contribution of DJ Afro from Los Amigos Invisibles, supplying his own dueling flamenco guitar strums and riffs. Euphoric motion for the most summery of dance-floors ‚ it's a classic Hardkiss maneuver.

After his acclaimed binary star-studded album Technicolor Dreamer and its epic intergalactic remixes, Scott Hardkiss introduces a new collaboration through his God Within label. It’s with buzzing Brooklyn-based indie-rock band The Veda Rays, an artsy, psychedelic noise pop quartet that, like Scott, are aiming far beyond this solar system. 

Scott originally bonded with the band’s drummer, engineer and mixer Jason Gates who, as a “brother in rhythm” also fascinated with music technology both archaic and futuristic, was enlisted to work on Technicolor Dreamer. The pairing flourished and as Jason formed his own Veda Rays project Scott became eager to get involved. “All Your Pretty Fates,” the lead track from The Veda Rays’ debut Gamma Rays Galaxy Rays Veda Rays, was chosen as the cut to get the full-on Scott Hardkiss treatment. Scott’s acumen at adding tasteful electronic beats and spaciness to rock n’ roll originals is well known through his past remixes for the likes of The Flaming Lips, Dean & Britta, Primal Scream, and even Elton John. The Veda Rays happily submitted to this treatment and the result is a hypnotic groover that showcases the band’s sublime vocals (courtesy of lead-singer James Stark) and instrumentation alongside Scott’s cutting-edge beats, arrangement and synthesized whiz-bang.

This  track--"Go Play Outside Parts one and two"-- is one of  the first and few remixes I did in my DJ/ producer career.   I did this remix in 1996, with my mentor Many Rosa and Jimmm Dunn.  My other mentor, Scott Hardkiss,  engineered the mix; and without these guys this track would not of happened.  We put together  a very bare bone home studio at my house and learned to use the gear as we made the track.  Then I went to Scott's studio to mix it down and pump it up.


Our  remixes on this cd are kinda weird and definitely rough. But they represent my first attempts of trying to make music on my own (with my DJ partner Manny Rosa), in my own studio.  My one major regret as a DJ is the fact that I did not produce more remixes or put out any original tracks.  But instead of focusing on regrets about what did not happen, I am sharing these tracks to inspire myself about what can  happen and to get back into making music.  I might be a caregiver and a nursing student, but I am still Charlotte the Baroness.

Theses tracks were a part of a remix CD project that I produced, "The Royal Treatment" a compilation CD of Zoe Magik's City of Tribes tracks.  It is a compilation and not a "mix cd".  I got together a talented crew of SF DJs, producers and musicians to do the other remixes.  It was an incredible learning experience that helped put my name on the map.  Scott  Hardkiss' remix did great and was re-released on Sunburn Records. In addition to Scott, a great variety of sonic delights were remixed by Gavin Hardkiss, Wade Randolph Hampton, 900 Drummers feat. Kevin Carnes, Danio and Joshio, and Tyler Stone aka Ms.T.

Charlotte The Baroness & Cle Acklin (SoundProof Records) combined each of their unique takes on dance music and had fun in the studio producing this original track. Here's a remix for San Francisco DJ dude <a href="http://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/jpsoul">JP Soul</a> and the newly re-launched <a href="http://www.roamrecordings.com/home/">Roam Recordings</a>. 

Remix notes: Many of the elements from the original have gone a bit topsy-turvy here; reversed, effected, distorted, stomped upon with boat shoes. One listener detected a sample from a science fiction movie but it was the wrong movie and the wrong sample. That said, there's something from some PBS advertisement that's been recorded out of the TV speaker by accident while the mic was hot. Don't even try … you'll never guess. I'm also playing a synthesizer I'm holding in a single bare palm at one point, so that's a bit of an accomplishment. Yes, there's a cowbell. Thanks for noticing.
