Bandua takes the centuries-old, traditional music from the Beira Baixa region of Portugal, and re-imagines it with an electronic folk reinterpretation. Conceived by Portuguese/Brazilian musician, sound-explorer and eclectic producer Tempura (Bernardo D'Addario) and Portuguese singer and all-round musician Edgar Valente, Bandua represents the first time that these sounds and songs have been repurposed as a melancholic, Portuguese-language electronic pop record.

Influenced by pagan and Moorish traditions, Beira Baixa is a central region of Portugal steeped in ancient culture with a rugged, hyper-regionalised history of folk music. With both artists having roots in the region, it felt right for them to collaborate and produce this love-letter to their homes. “Bandua is a reinterpretation of traditional Portuguese songs from the Beira Baixa region, bringing them into the modern world,” explains Tempura “we wanted to create something new, while not forgetting where we came from.”

Through Bandua, this ancient tradition of story-telling through percussive, multi-toned music will now find a new generation of listeners, thanks to Tempura and Edgar Valente.

Fertil Discos, nóvel sello argentino con sede en Buenos Aires, presenta su más reciente compilación, dividida en dos volúmenes, con sonidos distinguidos en dos etapas del día: “Dia” y “Noche”.  En ellos se pueden apreciar los nuevos pasos de la corriente actual de artistas electrónicos influenciados por los sonidos y ritmos de Latinoamérica. 

El compilado propone un soundtrack ideal para atardeceres o amaneceres en islas desiertas, tomando inspiración de ritmos ancestrales, bajos electrónicos y producciones recientes con una mentalidad de  “música sin fronteras”.

Fertil discos is a newly born argentinean label, based in Buenos Aires. We are pleased to announce our most recent compilation, divided in two separate albums -one representing the Day, the other gathering Night sounds. Both records illustrate the new steps of the new wave of South America’s electronic artists, influenced by the sounds and rythms of our continent.

The compilation proposes you an ideal soundtrack for sunrises/sunsets on desert islands, drawing inspiration from ancient rhythms, electronic bass lines, and recent productions with a world music mindset.

Both volumes put together danceable songs like “Animal Estrella” (Pol Nada & El Remolón) and “Periferia” (Paisandoom); folktronic compositions like “Tejido” (Jin Yerei feat. Kona); slow techno songs like “Orobon” (Barda) and talented electronic compositions like “Dialogue” (Tomanka) and “Galata” (Santi) among other undiscovered gems.

In different times this creation would be played on every downtempo gathering on the globe. This splendid collab contains a deep and profound beat, mind-blowing melodies, and lots of joy. This sound got picked up by the dutch vagabond @krautmusica and the south africa based producer @leeu88 put in two various thrilling and powerful remixes. This global collaboration between 4 different continents.

Continuing to push his sound into new realms through experimentation with different influences, Joaquin Cornejo returns to Earthly Measures with his first vinyl release. The ‘Las Frutas’ EP contains 6 genre-bending, tempo-shifting tracks that form to create a mesmerising blend of footwork, dub, Latin & African percussion.
 
‘Las Frutas’ explores a collaboration with both the Spanish singer Alex Serra and British DJ and trumpet player DJ Swordfish. It’s constructed by a warped and pitched down drum break that has been slowly surrounded by subby kicks, toms and dub chords that echo through tape delays, giving it a wonderfully spaced out atmosphere that provides the perfect backdrop for the soothing vocals and brass instruments.

Mâhfoud’s (@mahfoudmusic) intense passion for multidimensional art and music shines through his latest EP, his first in 5 years, Contours of the Night Sky. As the second release of 2021 from The Gardens of Babylon, the core family member delivers a long awaited four-track journey into the depths of memory and personal evolution.

Drawing from a multi-cultural background including a childhood in Aleppo, Syria, Mâhfoud’s life journey has taken him from the Middle East to Europe where he began his musical one. As a vocalist, lyricist, instrumentalist, composer, and producer, his electronically driven compositions have since graced labels like Diynamic Music, Klassified, and Traum Schallplatten, delivering unconventional takes on audio recording and social science. Contours of the Night Sky offers a natural progression and maturation in this sound and approach, integrating Mâhfoud’s worldliness and curiosity, further safeguarding his philosophy of reinvention and critical thought.

Kicking off with the aptly named Childhood, the personal nature of Contours of the Night Sky is immediately apparent. Struck by the mellifluous sounds of the Oud, memories of an era past pour from a genetic level upward and outward. Celestial Woman then tells the volatile tale of heartbreak and its aftermath. Its lyrics may speak of revenge, but its emotion lies within pride and ego – the eternal struggle of maturation. Fuji then brings playfulness to the package with a psychedelic, guitar- driven track. Summertime vibes complement its jovial nature, creating the release’s undeniable crowd pleaser. Wrapping things up is the dancefloor-oriented Moon Whisper. An ethereal journey into hope and connection, Moon Whisper leaves provides listeners with the perfect balance of closure and anticipation – the end of one journey, and curiosity for what comes next from this most unique of talents.

Mâhfoud’s offering is a diaphanous venture into beauty, nostalgia, and its connection to the here and now. Both a rediscovery of the self and a testament to life’s uncertainty, Contours of the Night Sky is a snapshot of this moment in history, both personal and societal.
