„Peg“ appears on The Dans famous album „Aja“. The song represents a very typical example of their sophisticated songwriting. An Intro with a jazzy chord-progression, a verse following the Blues-scheme, a call and response chorus with gorgeous backing vocals leading into a section, which reminds a bit on Bach („when the shutter falls“). In the center an exemplary guitar-solo (Jay Graydon).  The unbelievable perfectionism of Fagen and Becker is shown by an anecdote about the guitar-solo. Seven top session-players like Larry Carlton and Robben Ford were burned during the studio-sessions until Jay Graydon could convince with the final version. In my opinion „Peg“ is one of the many highlights on „Aja“.

The lyrics could be influenced by a tragic Hollywood-story: In September 1932 Peg Entwistle, an unlucky and unsuccessful Hollywood-actress jumped to death from the „H“ of the Hollywood-sign in Los Angeles. Her name became a synonym for the dark side of Hollywood and the whole era.

As usual I arranged this song in the notation-software „Sibelius“. Then I set up the Cello with VSL „Solo strings“, at last I recorded the two violins and the viola live. 

Instruments used: Violin „Anton Piegendorfer“ built 1902, Viola from AaKe violinmakers Bad Homburg (www.rhein-main-geigenbau.de/aake/contente.htm); VSL Violoncello from „Solo strings"

Recording notes: Because the viola was too sharp the last time I used the three microphones in the opposite order, the viola was recorded with the darkest mic. I used the sharp Condenser for the second violin to give it an extra push against the dominant first violin. The mix worked much better this way.
