Chris works as a university lecturer and tours with a band called Hollow Coves but debuted this solo project in 2022, quickly picking up support from BBC Introducing. He draws inspiration from UK house and garage but with an effort to incorporate acoustic instruments and ambient soundscape found in everyday city life. The aim of each piece is to "try and instill a peaceful perspective on these noises," he says, and already 'Swimming' has had BBC radio airplay and was featured on Spotify's editorial Playlist “Brain Food”.

The first tune on the EP, 'Swimming,' is made from an old recording of a busker playing a hang drum, which has been treated and manipulated, and then combined with some samples of cutlery in a restaurant, and some layered treated violins. It's a gorgeous piece with an optimistic mood and compelling broken-beat grooves. 'Rhombus' then lifts you off your feet with more lithe synth sounds and organic percussive sounds that fans of Four Tet or Pantha Du Prince will love.

'Month of May' is harder and darker, a UK bass cut that will get faces screwed and emotions high as the emotive piano line unfolds amongst the physical groove. 'Three Dancers' features more interesting natural samples - the main drone is made from a phone recording of the wind in Yosemite National Park. It makes for a captivating indie-dance cut with loose-limbed rhythms and plaintive chords. Finally, 'Jackfruit' is a track originally written to accompany a Scuba dive as Milnes was inspired to do just that for the first time last year. This track is an attempt to symbolise and encapsulate some of the feelings of diving deep into the ocean and being able to explore a second world. It's delightfully airy and full of optimism, a gentle downtempo cut with a big heart.

This intriguing EP is to be followed by an all-new live show from this genuinely innovative artist.
