What is Wyrd?

If time is not considered or experienced in a linear fashion but instead regarded as an interconnected series of events, each affecting the other, ‘that which happens’ or wyrd becomes not a destination but a sign post, or even a crossroads. Just as the traveller affects the outcome of his journey by the path he chooses, so do we play an active role in facing what wyrd metes out to us. Wyrd can be “worked”. What you do as an individual can bend or change wyrd.

Consider Time not as a swiftly flowing river, constantly rushing us further away from our births to our deaths, but instead as a lake or pool of infinite size. A handful of pebbles tossed unto the surface of a still pool creates simultaneous, rippling impressions on the water that spreading, touch each other and overlap. Each pebble is distinct from the other. They may be larger or smaller and create a splash of greater or lesser size, but the path of each creates an impression on the watery impression of every other pebble. These pebbles represent wyrd, but ours are the hands that cast them.

Even when a man was doomed by wyrd, there were always consolations, even if it was simply accepting an unpleasant fate with courage. The last line of the poem known as Resignation, a meditation on the Day of Judgment, sums this up well:

It is still the best thing, since a man may not himself avert his destiny, that he should therefore suffer it well.

The Boogie Brothers’ – Let’s Go feat Sato

When this bomb landed at Paper Towers their only option was to clear the decks and get it out asap. The Boogie Brothers’ ‘Let’s Go’ featuring Sato on vocals is the said track. Cooked up by Japan-based Julian Brennan and Cal Gibson (The Secret Soul Society) as a live disco jam that channels Arthur Russell, FK and Larry Levan. Sato from Japanese cosmic pop duo Viva Sherry was brought on board to provide vocals, and the result is a release that sounds like a modern disco classic. No remixes, no edits, just one stone-cold killer cut and with Danny Krivit already all over it.

The Secret Soul Society are an act who get us very excited here at LV HQ whether it’s for their own classy releases or the label they co-run Scruffy Soul Recordings whose The Kyoto Connection EP we featured a few weeks back HERE. Their latest venture is a 15 song album packed full of outstanding original compositions, sample heavy gems and leftfield groove. 
Landing this coming Friday on Slightly Transformed as a Juno Download exclusive it’s an outstanding way to see out 2020 with the promise of a much better year ahead. 
Songs From The Soul Kitchen is an album that pulls many disparate genres together from Thievery Corporation dubbed out electronica through Jazz edged electronic licks reminiscent of Flying Lotus. It flows through tracks channeling Stevie Wonder and the lighter moments of Screamadelica era Andrew Weatherall straight into deep blues edged Beta Band cool and sample heavy disco moments. 
It full of distinct influences but equally as a whole its combined sound pallet sounds original and exciting. The samples are well chosen and engaging and work together perfectly as an piece, The Secret Soul Society has most definitely found their own vibe here and it’s one which it is easy to become fully involved in. 
Our premier today is Better Get To Know You, which is one of the more disco edged and dancefloor ready tracks on the album, It’s main vocal loop is a delight, easy going, fun and cool. It’s a track in the vein of the Stardust’s and Modjo’s of this world as far as the feelings that it elicits.

Not so much edits, or remixes, as new music inspired by archival sources is Secret Soul Society’s E.P. on Paper Recordings. SSS being an extremely prolific new-ish venture from Neon Heights` Cal Gibson. There`s a quartet of tunes on offer, but I`ll pick just 2. Jeff & David loops reeds and rippling pianos while some sampled wise-head explains the way discotheques should work. The relationship between the DJ and the dancers, where it`s the dancers that define the dance. The more drum-driven Cantoma-esque Sunday Brown is a bongo-bashing heat-haze of keys in gliding glissando and muted vocal harmonies.

Taken from Scruffy Soul Recording’s ‘Scruffy Soul EP 003: The Kyoto Connection’ our premier today The Found Sound Orchestra’s Do What You Like is a sublime slice of groove heavy deep vocal bliss. Landing somewhere between Chromeo at their coolest and 80’s AOR fused with loft era deep funk fueled disco it’s a track which is clearly influenced by many different genres but which comes out of the other end sounding in equal parts fresh, inspiring and immediate. 
Scruffy Soul Recordings is a joint UK / Oz based label launched in June 2020 by founding members of The Secret Soul Society and The Found Sound Orchestra. Their latest EP features five tracks and is  stunning throughout. There are two individual tracks from Jules Brennan, who is the Kyoto connection of the title as he is based out in the Japanese city, one Jules Brennan vs Secret Soul track and a track each for label bosses Secret Soul Society and The Found Sound Orchestra. 
The whole EP is a Kaleidoscope of sounds from across the globe, it in many ways reminds me of the UK’s Beta Band’s fusion of electronica, world sounds and funk. Jules Brennan’s smile inducing Oh flamingo also has a touch of the Avalanches, a smorgasbord of instruments, short phrases, bass licks, vocal melodies and general off the wall banter. It’s a great fun track. 
Jules second individual track Theme De Kyoto has that Japanese feel through and through but also reminds in places of Thievery Corporation’s world electronica. The playing is sublime, guitar licks and smooth but ever so funky bass merge perfectly with the Japanese instruments. 
Jules Brennan vs Secret Soul Society’s You Turned Me meanwhile has a deep 60’s soulful lilt to it’s deep warm groove courtesy of some great vocal samples. Again expect guitar licks and a cornerstone of the whole EP some fabulous bass playing.
Secret Soul Society’s Groovy Business is just that, it’s horizontal 70’s soundtrack feel is great fun again bringing to mind the Beta Band at their most playful as it’s acidic and eastern notes combine to give it extra grit.
