BREAK DJ LEACY - B.BOY B.GIRL FUNK (1996)

Scruscru and Los Protos hook up on the former's ever-reliable label for some more funk-fuelled and sample-heavy madness. This eight-tracker draws on the best of Library, jazz, hip hop and soul and collides elements of all of those together with some raw, and what sounds like, MPC beats, all tapped out with a lovably loose vibe. Some like 'Local Sugar Diggers' look up towards a sunny, cloudless sky, others like 'Dreams Of Sonora' are swaggering broken beat workouts with sensuous sax lines setting a steamy tone. 'Por Do Sol Em Shelekhmet' is another highlight with its aloof, angelic vocal tones

Scruscru dives into "the modern Yerevan bubble of music" with a new various artists outing that takes a look at the Armenian take on jazz, hip hop and house. It's utterly refreshing right off the bat with Vahagn M & Ycrow layering up jazzy keys with nice contemporary deep house swing, UNDO takes things into a vibey live jazz lounge and Your Friend Daao lays down shuffling and broken drum patterns that are effervescent with Neo-soul and nu-jazz energy. Elsewhere, Yerevan Calling's 'Next Step' brings stuttering jazz swagger and Shhau & Mesrop sink into a deep and soulful late-night sound on 'Andset'. There is a great deal of musical charm and originality to all of these fresh fusions, which makes this is vital LP.

LTF began as a 90s b-boy who was raised on funk and hip-hop before he even knew the names of the music he was hearing. Under the influence of early greats like DJ Shadow, Beat Junkies and Cut Chemist, he dove into turntablism and spun breaks across Siberia while digging for records. Once he discovered the sampler, his world shifted to loops, chops, basslines and scratches. His debut project Dapdown earned local buzz and global connections, including France's Black Milk Music crew, and a decade ago, while armed with Soviet synths, double bass, and dusty vinyl, he dropped his first solo album, Light The Fuse. It's truly raw, expressive, beat-lover's soul with a heavy groove that has been remastered for this reissue via Tunes Delivery.

Russian hip-hop producer Boora steps up with 'Dedicado Ao Rei/Party Groove', a new Scruniversal 7" with dusty sample chops and an analogue grit. Drawing on Soviet-era sounds and classic gear like the SP-1200 and MPC, Boora crafts tight boom-bap rhythms with a deft touch. 'Dedicado Ao Rei' radiates warmth, layering rolling breaks with subtle Latin inflections, while 'Party Groove' flips playful James Brown ad-libs over punchy chord stabs. This release distills Boora's love for sample-driven hip-hop into two tracks equal parts nostalgic and fresh, highlighting his knack for blending rhythmic precision with lo-fi character.

Summer might be over in a literal sense, but there is no finer way to keep its vibes alive than with another scorching drop from Scruniversal, especially when it is focused on Brazilian sounds. This latest comes from a trip of talents and first up is 'Inspetores De Umidade,' a lithe and funky break that rolls on fat drums with organic percussion and Portuguese raps turning up the sunshine. On the flipside is 'Acido Brasil', another ass-wiggling delight with big horns, wiggly 303 details and a funk to spare. Pure heat on a very tasty 7".

London-based music collective The Tribe of Good release their brand new single ‘Heroes’ on January 18 via Ultra Records. The track, which is an interpretation of David Bowie and David Eno’s 1977 classic ‘Heroes’, is the second single to be released from their forthcoming album succeeding the uplifting string-laced jam ‘Turning It Up For The Sunshine.’

Topped with extra sprinkles of cosmic electronica, The Tribe of Good have drawn musical influences from both vintage and modern day creative techniques to rework the classic and perform it in an entirely different way. “The backing track is contemporary electronica crafted by Michele Balduzzi (AKA Phonat - dubbed by Skrillex as the most underrated producer in the world) while the vocals are radically re-interpreted as a female vintage soul song, recorded entirely on 1950s equipment.” says Hal Ritson - the Grammy-nominated mastermind steering the group into the spotlight.

"The hallmark of a great song is that it can be performed in a totally different style, and not only still work, but can suddenly reflect new and different aspects of the writer’s original vision.”

When speaking about the track Ritson said: “We were drawn to Heroes as a song, because in this time of conflict and division people can often feel hopeless and insignificant. Bowie’s message that every one of us can make a difference in the world, in our own personal way, seems as vital now as the day it was written."

The Tribe of Good are the secret weapons behind your favourite chart hits. This sprawling supergroup combines vintage soul and disco with modern production techniques to create explosive retro-futurist fireworks that light up the pop horizon. Headed up by Grammy-nominated producer Hal Ritson (Dizzee Rascal, Chemical Brothers, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Duke Dumont, High Contrast,) the group’s ethos is one of unabashed positivity and brawny resistance.
