A special album created by Taka Noda aka Mystica Tribe from Japan. Island Oasis features 8 dubbed out tracks that reverberate through the forest.

The cover photo Bonsai Fir Tree is symbol of resilience, strength and determination. It is a shared connection between Japan and Canada. 

Featuring an analogue mixdown and mastering on tape through a Studer A80, ½ inch tape machine by Stefan Betke of Scape Mastering. The album Island Oasis will be available in limited edition vinyl, CD, cassette and digital formats Winter 2016.

Mystica Tribe is the musical alias of Tokyo-based producer, Taka Noda. Drawing on a wide range of influences – from dub, soul, bass music, rhythm and blues – Mystica Tribe has quickly been developing a very distinctive sound that exists in a weird, freaked out zone between dub and techno. Noda is especially interested in deep, psychedelic music, and this is reflected in his productions, which are equally suited for late night listening sessions or bent, broken in dancefloors. His first track, “Meditation Stick”, was released in 2011 on Dutch label SD Records, backed by two remixes from label owners Syncom Data. This was followed by two more EPs on SD Records in 2013: “Stars are Mine” and “Flowers”. Artists like Gilles Peterson and 2562 have supported these well-received releases, and his track “His Temple” recently appeared on Pangaea’s Fabric Live 73 mix CD. In 2014, Noda is launching his own label, Mystica Tribe Records, through which he plans to continue developing his uniquely psychedelic take on dub and techno. His recent EP, “Lizard”, was released on his label in 2014. “Jade Eye” was released on his label in 2016.

We almost missed this one. So to ensure ‘In Waves’ made waves in the pages of Mixmag, we went back to it – and boy will you be glad you did, too. Lord Of The Isles, aka producer and graphic designer Neil McDonald, has been writing and producing for almost a decade, the enigmatic releases finding homes on key electronic imprints like Permanent Vacation, Phonica and Mule Music. His debut album, released via LA label ESP Institute, is fresh and spectacular. McDonald says an early fascination with Scottish history inspired his moniker, as well as being dragged around the Highlands by his parents as a young child. Those trips clearly made an impact on him, because ‘In Waves’ is laced with beautiful chord progressions and colours as bright as tartan. He seems to be as in touch with nature as he is with percussion and quirky melodies, as demonstrated by the sound of waves washing over pianos on the title track. Its 15 tracks are the epitome of otherworldly electronic sophistication and yes, for the most part they’re as Balearic as a classic DJ Harvey disco re-edit. Certain tracks stick out: the glitchy Balearic bounce of ‘Liobasta’ is an early highlight, as is the smooth cinematic touch of ‘Obar Lìobhaite’. The Âme/Dixon-ish bleep masterclass ‘Weh-In’ doesn’t put a foot wrong over eight scorched minutes, either, while the subtly breathtaking ‘Yanomami’ isn’t far behind. Lord Of The Isles, a.k.a. Neil McDonald, has spent the better part of a decade steadily producing and releasing beautiful music. The ESP Institute has always wholeheartedly believed in Neil’s work ethic and his journey as an artist who constantly refines his vision, and when we inevitably approached in hopes of working together, we were enamoured by the sheer breadth and depth of work he had 'in progress’.
There are two types of artists. One internalises their process, endlessly perfecting their work while finding the endpoint a massive hurdle, in turn they produce immaculate yet very little art. The other is continuously inspired, so full of ideas they can barely work fast enough to articulate them all. The art becomes by-product of their larger trajectory and not just a collection of endpoints. Lord Of The Isles seems to be both, always in an evolving state of process where the work is constantly shed to make way for the new layer growing beneath, yet he holds his cards closely, cherry picking when and with whom he releases his art into the world.
Neil is simply prolific. He shared with us a vast catalog of unheard beauty, which over a long span of time was collaboratively shaped into his debut album “In Waves”. The title speaks to Neil’s process both intimately and from afar, it speaks to the emotional ebb and flow of the music itself, and ultimately it speaks to the listener.
Ahead of the album’s release, we are proud to share with you the single ‘Weh-In’, a mesmerizing arpeggio melody that opens and closes, purrs and barks, and plays nicely with its percussive accompaniment over more than 10 minutes. This lengthy single version of the track is joined by a dark and stormy, exclusive non-album cut entitled ‘Pik’, as well as a big room rave remix by ESP Institute resident Ian Blevins, which take us to a slightly more frantic place while retaining the euphoric essence of the original.
