A Beautiful Lie

A friend of mine was just killed in a car accident today. His name was Sean Carango. He was a drummer. A very good drummer.  I came to know him through music. He had heard some of my stuff on Soundcloud and contacted me to tell me how much he liked it and that if I ever needed a drummer to consider him because he would love to play on my songs. So I searched out some of his music and within a couple minutes of hearing him play, I wrote him back saying "Fuck ya, you can play on my songs!" He absolutely kicked ass on the drums. Powerful and spirited yet still polished and sensitive to the needs of the songs. That is a rare thing in most drummers. He used to own a recording studio so maybe that is why he understood the importance of the song coming first over some flashy ego based performance. He got that it was all about the song. Right now I am staring at a package on my table with his address on it. I am thinking that the contents of the package may never see the light of day again. It is a digi 002, a motorized digital mixing board, that I was sending to him as a gift. He was excited about it, as he was slowly putting a studio back together. He had been forced to abandon his old studio to get a more secure "real" job 15 years ago when his wife left him and their two small children. They are teenagers now and my heart goes out to them. I can't imagine what they must be going through right now. We had a lot in common, other than having the same name. Some things were so similar that it was funny. We both had a strong love for the music of The Monkees, and we both met the drummer for The Monkees, Micky Dolenz. And on our respective meetings with said drummer, we both were insulted and rudely snubbed by that cocksucker and have held a loathing grudge towards him ever since. I feel it is my duty now to carry with me Sean's utter dislike for his former hero along with my own contempt for the miserable asshole. Dolenz would do well never to cross my path again. Just within this last week, we had begun a collaboration, along with two others, Arthur from Germany and Jesper from Sweden, on a rendition of the Beatles song Tomorrow Never Knows.  The energy in the collaboration was really positive, enthusiastic and fun. This is the demo I recorded four days ago that I sent to them. They loved it and it steered it the project towards keeping our rendition of the song truer to the original as opposed to going with a version based on the one done by Nora Jones. I am not sure if a song title has ever felt more appropriate to me than this one does now. Rest in peace Sean Carango, my friend.
