Over all these years, going through the motions in busy streets, courts and ballrooms, marching along with the parade, one will see an endless gallery of facades, masks, faux costumes, and contrived personas. Only a sensitive hand can tear down this adhered wallpaper of imitation. Standing under this gleaming sunrise is not an act of defiance, anger, or detachment; it is invitation, albeit a futile one, to see what lies beneath.

Copenhagen-based visual and musical artist øjeRum presents 'Lav Sol', an album of symbolistic landscapes seen through intuition. In his music, Paw Grabowski effortlessly combines traditional, classical themes and motives into contemporary poetic forms. The three long-take recordings of Lav Sol inspire to look for the truth under the surface.

The latest signing on Local Suicide’s imprint Iptamenos Discos is the Greek DJ / producer duo Boys’ Shorts (@boysshorts). They’re delivering their new futuristic EP titled ‘New Era’, which includes remixes from Each Other, Lott & Local Suicide as well as Luca dell’Orso. The duo was founded by Thessaloniki-based artist Vangelis, who runs half of the music blog & label LAGASTA, as well as London-based artist Tareq. With two EPs under their belt ("Looking" and "Together") they also delivered remixes for artists like Kasper Bjorke, Yuksek w/ Polo & Pan, Dharma, Kito Jempere ft. Wolfram to name a few, whilst their remix for Casey Spooner was included in the Red Hot + Free compilation.

“The track was written during the lockdown period when everything looked so uncertain and scary … We were listening to a lot of music from bands as ‘Japan’ and ‘Visage’, talking about the “New Romantics” era, thinking of what will come after this new reality we’re living in. And so “New Era” came as a result of all the relationships that were reconsidered the last two years, to show the importance of human touch and what really actually matters.” - Boys’ Shorts

The track immediately gives off a sense of space exploration due to the sound of the melody being played. While the repetitive bass keeps the track driving as the pads elevate you to a higher level, the drums keep you grooving with delicate knocks and cowbells as the claps work with the cowbells to bring some more energy into the track. There’s a slicing, ‘swoosh’ sound that fills the space of an open-hat which breaks the four bar loop subtly but perfectly. The track's vocals have a wide sound to them that helps simulate the vastness of space.

One could be forgiven, if stumbling upon some nameless wav files, for thinking the White Stains back catalogue was perhaps a collection of unfinished pre-2012 Lust For Youth tracks Hannes Norrvide never got round to vocalising. Layered, synthetic pads are held together under ultra-bright melodies and an all-encompassing lo-fi atmosphere. Yet herein lies the beauty of the project; that it can present a sense of absence and still feel, ultimately, fulfilling.

But this new album is leap forward for White Stains' Belgian protagonist, Koenraad Impens. Pale Desires tip-toes tenderly the line between the washed-out synthpop of old and a move into a cleaner, more delicate territory. This is a far less aggressive incarnation of the project and whilst retaining some essential elements much of the harsh lo-fi aspect has been stripped away in favour of more ambient textures.

It's a sign of maturity; once commanding presence, now reclining under fading neons, White Stains is perhaps becoming the project it always wanted to be.
