In times where fantasy worlds are endangered, Saturns Drive creates his own. ‘Next Stop Nebula’ merges oceanic slide guitars and early synth digitalism with 90s inspired rhythms to get any sailors ship sailing.

Saturns Drive is a Berlin-based music project created by Elfy, a producer and DJ from New Zealand who draws inspiration from early sci-fi, exotica and library music, cosmic disco synthesizers, italo grooves and arpy electronics. He has recently been featured on the track "Parallel Panorama" by Saeko Killy and performs regularly along with other artists from Berlin's music community.

Episode 72 is an archival dive into the audio works of Kyoto based multi-media collective Dumb Type. Founded in 1984 by Teiji Furuhashi the group’s work includes exhibitions, performances, video pieces, computer programs, print publications, and conceptual audio albums. Furuhashi, who passed in 1995, claimed the name represents “a society overstuffed with information but cognizant of nothing.” The group continues under the stewardship of longtime members Toru Yamanaka and Shiro Takatani. Over the years many artists have collaborated with the collective including Ryoji Ikeda and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Dumb Type’s work addresses a variety of socio-political themes including nationality, identity, communication, AIDS, civilization, media control, and explores the undefined borders of the information society for new visions of human / technological interaction. The pieces on this mix were selected from 4 decades of work including demo versions, interviews, performance soundtracks, archival sketches, and a few stunning solo pieces from Toru Yamanaka.

Music before bread w/ Montana - May 4th 2024

Lars Bartkuhn and Jan Hennig (better known by his artist name Kabuki) have been friends for 20 years, but it wasn’t until late 2017 that they started collaborating musically. Both veterans in their respective corners of club culture (Kabuki in Jungle, Bartkuhn in House), their experiments together saw them drift away from beat-centric, floor-filling music, and land on the deep-listening side of soundsystem culture. These sessions saw both producers combine their individual strengths — Kabuki as an engineer, sound designer and modular synth wiz, Bartkuhn as a classically trained musician, composer and guitar player — into something that carries their sonic fingerprints, yet achieves something greater than the sum of its parts. 

Impressed with the results of these sessions they decided to name their project The First Minute of a New Day, and focussed on mixing and editing down the sessions with an album in mind. The duo also enlisted fellow sound-traveler Laraaji, who jammed long-distance, layering his characteristic phased zither over one of their sketches, which became “July 14th”. 

All of the tracks on their self-titled LP are named after the day of the initial session, proclaiming their improvisatory genesis. The resulting recordings have the looseness and heady structure of jazz sessions, but with deeply felt electronic production, like something born from Can’s Inner Space Studio or touched by the magical hands of Conny Plank. The deep mix of electronic jazz, new age and ambient, combined with the deft abilities of the players, makes the album feel like a decidedly modern addition to the ECM or Windham Hill canon.
