Bangladesh only a decade after its 1971 independence war with Pakistan created a number of bands who combined the traditional songwriting techniques with influences from western acts. There is an obvious influence of Reggae, New-Wave, Funk and Psychedelic Rock throughout most of these recordings. Most of these bands released directly to cassette since there wasn’t much of a budget to produce vinyl LP’s. However this low barrier of entry resulted in many bands picking up their instruments to have a go at stardom. This mix here is a selection of the vast variety of 80s and 90s Bangladeshi bands who created a unique sound of melancholy yet infectiously funky tunes. These recordings reflect the heart and minds of the Bangladeshi people still torn by war but also holding on to the hope of a brighter future.

Bangladeshi 80s 90s Cassette Special

Episode 72 is an archival dive into the audio works of Kyoto based multi-media collective Dumb Type. Founded in 1984 by Teiji Furuhashi the group’s work includes exhibitions, performances, video pieces, computer programs, print publications, and conceptual audio albums. Furuhashi, who passed in 1995, claimed the name represents “a society overstuffed with information but cognizant of nothing.” The group continues under the stewardship of longtime members Toru Yamanaka and Shiro Takatani. Over the years many artists have collaborated with the collective including Ryoji Ikeda and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Dumb Type’s work addresses a variety of socio-political themes including nationality, identity, communication, AIDS, civilization, media control, and explores the undefined borders of the information society for new visions of human / technological interaction. The pieces on this mix were selected from 4 decades of work including demo versions, interviews, performance soundtracks, archival sketches, and a few stunning solo pieces from Toru Yamanaka.

Music before bread w/ Montana - May 4th 2024

In the beginning of the year, my old friend the Duke from Nation Records asked me to participate to his annual online gathering "Unlimited Nation", a reunion of music heads enthusiasts. 
I didn't had the chance to participate in the past, and I was really happy to be able to do it this time, but bad luck, due to a technical fiasco issue (I didn't prepared well for the online streaming), my set couldn't be streamed in the ideal conditions and we had to give it a term (at least people get a lot of fun seeing me taking the full storm from the duke ;D)))... 
Full of frustration after leaving the connection I decided to record it again, straight away, so here it is, a 2h selection of stuff that I have been playing in the past... it's raw, recorded in one take, mixed with a bunch of vinyls and 2x mk2 and xone 42 mixer at the studio of my friends Doo and Ogi in Belgrade, thanks to them for the hospitality.

New unrealeased Mix series #2 : Unlimited Nation (the mix that couldn't exist)

Massimo Del Corpo is the alter-ego of Lamusa II, an enigmatic Italian musician based in Paris. Anima Di Gomma is Massimo’s first release, recorded over the course of one week, after nightfall. The process was deliberately minimal using only two or three instruments at a time (ARP Odyssey, Cimar guitar & SG Bass), and processing those instruments using only analog delay and spring reverb. The result is a collection of atmospheric arabesques that evolve patiently from overlapping ornaments of delay and percussive metallic ARP patterns. Evocative of early tape-delay pioneers Gunter Schickert, M.A.L., Robert Fripp, and Sensation’s Fix, but with a less progressive approach, and a damp monochromatic sensibility that wouldn’t sound out of place on 80s Japanese cult labels Vanity or Pinakotheca. 

Limited edition of 50 Hi-Bias cassettes.
