This month Carhartt WIP radio features renowned radio host, label founder, and record curator Michael Kucyk from Melbourne, Australia. Kucyk rose to prominence in 2005 via independent Melbourne radio station 3rrr.fm, where he debuted his show Noise In My Head. The show later moved to NTS Radio, before evolving 2015 into what is now the @efficientspace, a reissue label committed to releasing rare and obscure music from Australia, covering everything from post-punk to folk and avant-pop.
 
The mix that Kucyk created for this month’s episode reflects the label’s wide and diverse catalog, featuring early influential releases, album closers, and often-overlooked gems. Every month I ask myself the same question: have I not played this before? Although the music is always different, I tend to be drawn to similar sounds over and over again. Having said that you will never hear the same tracks in any of my mixes. It might've happened once or twice but no more... The challenge is to create something new every time that is influenced by an idea or current mood. To distil and filter these releases, weaving them together unexpectedly so they resonate within each of us through an infinite journey to The Other Side.

The town of Hayama is located on the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa, Japan. 
This was the third edition of Sound Wave held at HAYAMA UMINO HOTEL, located in its best location.

Since it was just before Christmas, we created a winter-like atmosphere including gospel music.
As soon as I started DJing, I had a glass of wine and a terrible mix...

To kick off the new year we have a special mix from Swedish record collector Oscar Richt. He’s been collecting for over three decades and has helped compile obscurities on Guerssen & Busy Bee Records. For this mix Oscar culled songs from school, youth centre, and local cultural organization compilations, an important facet of the Swedish grassroots music movement of the 70’s & 80’s. These tracks were released between 1979 and 1989, recorded by young amateur musicians ranging from 13 to 20 years of age. Its a constellation of nascent desires and pop-culture filtered through talented young minds.

Embarking on the new calendar season of De Kat Memwa with a guest I've been eagerly anticipating. There's always been an imaginary roster of creators in my mind that I'd be thrilled to host in the series. Vienna-based artist Andrea Ida has long been on this list, but somehow, due to my own negligence, I couldn't get in touch with her. Finally, I managed to correct this glaring mistake.

I recall stumbling upon Andrea's mixes somewhere around 2019, and I was absolutely mesmerized. Nearly every corner of the sonic internet space was filled with tropical sounds, which we were also cultivating at that time. However, Andrea stood out among music enthusiasts with her love for krautrock, punk, NDW, and other dark arts and matters.

I deeply admire individuals with diverse musical interests who can showcase a wide array of genres in their mixes, while evoking a specific emotion or association. Andrea is precisely one of those musical weavers. Her mixes are comprised of different nodes and intertwinings that form a unified masterpiece.

For me, her works are always about active listening, surprise, inspiration, and most importantly, immersion in sound, transitioning from one state to another, and also about charisma and daily protest against routines. And this unique release, recorded by Andrea specifically for De Kat Memwa, is no exception.

As I was crafting this text, I wanted to encapsulate the impression of listening to the mix in the form of a metaphor. Perhaps it was obvious to write something about an esoteric shamanic ritual.... But not today... 

For me, this mix is akin to riding on Falcor the Luck Dragon from the movie The NeverEnding Story, only you're not a teenager anymore, but an adult!
