The Psalms have always held a great degree of significance to me, both as a Christian and as an artist. Much has been written about their beautiful composition and their timeless imagery, but beyond the Psalms’ considerable literary beauty and their theological profundity, I have always been drawn in by their honesty. For such early literature, these songs are remarkable for their frank depictions of their respective authors’ emotional states, whether ecstatic joy (as in Psalm 126), deep contrition (Psalm 51), assured hope (Psalm 23), or meditative ponderance (Psalm 39). The emotional nakedness of the Psalms always reminds me of God’s pursuit of our hearts: He would know us in our truest selves, rather than our constructed, ‘religious’ selves. It was with this posture that I began to write A Mere Breath, a reflection on Psalm 39. 

Psalm 39 feels uniquely ahead of its time, prefiguring the book of Ecclesiastes with its existential themes of ephemerality and uncertainty. Its surprising emotional complexity is perhaps what has made it so enduringly appealing, appearing in pieces from Johannes Brahms’ German Requiem to Igor Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms. I found myself identifying with the Psalm thanks in no small part to the time in which I had begun writing my piece: as the world continued to square off against the Covid-19 pandemic, I was applying to more school and was not altogether sure where I would be the next year. I identified with the Psalm’s thinly veiled frustration and confusion that stemmed from recognizing the sheer smallness of humanity in the face of an eternal God. 

A Mere Breath casts the violinist as psalmist, contending with the depths and scale of the eternal. Wispy and capricious, the violin part gradually unfolds the piece’s main theme, a plaintive, Hildegard-like hymn of simple beauty. Pursuing it across a variety of figurations, the soloist eventually takes hold of the melody with relief, swells in thanksgiving, and ultimately vanishes into nothingness.

A Mere Breath, for violin and electronics

This album is made by Bplrxxiii and Native Cell. We worked on and off on it, over a period of two years (2017-2019). It was a fun creative process, sending each other ideas back and forth to achieve intriguing sounds and soundscapes. Our inspiration was taken in nature and the infinitely large and infinitely small. Mixed with retro-futuristic vibe, ambiant and glitchy spiked details.

Trigon - 6 Drone

Sequential Trigon-6 synth, using all 3 VCOs for a sync FM sound. The triangle output from is VCO2 synced to VCO 1, and the triangle output of VCO3 (set an octave down from VCO1) is used to FM VCO2 via polymod. The result is a rich FM sound that retains the pitch center. Technically, this is "sync mod" where the sync frequency is being modulated at audio rates.

Trigon-6 Sync FM

Sequential Trigon-6. Two VCOs being used, with sawtooth and pulse waveforms for each VCO, max volume in the mixer. The LFO is used to modulate PWM on VCO1, while VCO3 is in LO KEYBOARD mode to modulate PWM on VCO2. Filter is using 2-pole mode, cutoff all the way up. Glide is enabled, with a short glide time.

Trigon - 6 Jump

Sequential Trigon-6. 3 VCOs per voice, with saw on VCO1 & 2, reverse saw & triangle on VCO 3. The Polymod section is used to slightly FM VCO2 and 3, as follows:

- Turn on FREQ 2 and FREQ 3 switches in Polymod
- Turn Osc 3 Amount to the desired level
- Retune Oscillator 3 to be in tune with Oscillator 1
- Retune Oscillator 2 to be in tune with Oscillators 1 and 3

The results will be kinda sorta in tune, which is the effects we are looking for. The detuning varies on a note-by-note basis.

The VCO levels are maxed out, the filter drive is maxed, and the filter resonance is kept very low. I am varying filter cutoff and env amount as the sequence plays.

Reverb provided by VintageVerb, using an upcoming reverb mode.

Trigon - 6 Polymod Detuning

Sequential Trigon-6. All 3 oscillators are turned up to max in the mixer, and filter drive is maxed as well. OSC 1 octave at -1, OSC 2 and OSC 3 octaves at +1. Saw for OSC 1 &2, reverse saw & triangle for OSC 3. 

The LFO is being used to slowly sweep Osc 2 only, by a very low amount. This changes the beat pattern of the VCOs.

A small amount of OSC 3 is being used to FM the filter via Polymod. Resonance is at 1 o'clock. 

PH3 is being used in the Effects section to add some sweep.

ValhallaVintageVerb is being used for reverb, featuring an upcoming reverb mode (check back in January 2023 for more details).

Trigon - 6 LFO Detuning

Sequential Trigon-6. Oscillator 1 and 2 are set an octave apart. Oscillator 3 is set to LO KEYBOARD mode, and is used for an octave trill for Oscillator 1 and 2 via Polymod. The LFO is also used to create a 5th trill for Oscillator 1 and 2. A fair amount of feedback is used to add grit to the sound. 

Reverb from ValhallaSupermassive, and a bit of shimmer reverb from ValhallaDelay using the RichPitch mode.

Duos with Piano: Book I marks the debut release from composer/performer Eric Wubbels, Co-Director and pianist of the essential New York collective Wet Ink Ensemble. 

Wubbels's "Duos with Piano" project encompasses eight works for eight different instruments paired with piano, written over a ten-year period for a network of close collaborators. These pieces aim to develop a 21st-century conception of ensemble virtuosity (now a virtuosity of listening, concentration, timbral fusion, and collaborative decision-making as much as of technique) in the microcosm of the duo format.
