We’re back to our regular schedule with a jazz/beats inspired episode and this time I’m joined Kiefer for our first interview since he appeared back on show #006! He’s the first feature in our new video series titled DEFINED where we go deeper into artist’s perspectives. Sam O.B. makes his Bastard Jazz debut with two dynamic and immersive songs illustrating themes of time and isolation. Dancefloor ready as singles, ‘This Saturday’ and ‘Opaque Pace’ are crafted for both your headphones and the club.

‘This Saturday’ conjures an after-hours mood with lyrics exploring feelings associated with social nightlife and its dualities of excitement/anxiety and confidence/self-doubt. Propelled by a hypnotic thump, the song is seasoned with swirling synths and scattered hand-claps and additional vocal harmonies by Allison Ponthier. ‘This Saturday’ ultimately invites you both lyrically and rhythmically to step out of your comfort zone and enter a space of real living: “Free those bones.”

‘Opaque Pace’ shifts from studying the kinetic movement of bodies to focus on the soluble movements of time. The track evolves patiently from fluttering woodblocks and undulating congas to a pulsing pad of choir harmonies. Sam’s ghostly vocals enter to hint at the shape-shifting qualities of time. Everything’s rolling nicely when a thunderous explosion of drums and heavy bass blast a hole through the hourglass. Seconds slip away like ever finer granules of sand passing under foot. Just as guitar rhythms congeal a melody, ‘Opaque Pace’ prepares to bow out, as ephemeral as it is uplifting.

Sam O.B. (fka Obey City) is a producer, DJ, label boss and tastemaker who has been making music in his native New York for the last decade. What started as casual experimentation and beat making for rappers and friends has evolved into an unrelenting solo passion, resulting in a steady stream of soul-drenched bedroom music that avoids trends in favor of the enduring. He’s released records with LuckyMe (UK), Astro Nautico (a label he co-founded), and Classic Music Company through his collaborative project, Dave + Sam.

Various Channels is a new series within the Darker Than Wax catalogue - a selector-led compilation series that pushes diversity in sound while also encapsulating a common connection of what brings people together. For the first volume, it’s all about location. Deeply inspired by the new wave of creative energy in New York City, the label is proud to present ‘Various Channels Vol. 1 : NYC’ - a compilation highlighting key artists at the forefront of NYC’s blooming music ecosystem, curated by selector Marco Weibel. While Darker Than Wax was born in Singapore, our satellite (or second) home is NYC.

A key figure behind Darker Than Wax since its early days, Marco moved to NYC in 2014, and has continued to establish a humble presence for the label through his tireless work as a DJ, Curator, Promoter & Radio Host. Within 6 years, Marco has seen New York’s underground grow through artists’ continual efforts to push the envelope and blur the lines between sounds. Thanks in part to uncompromising venues and community spaces such as The Lot Radio in Brooklyn (where Marco is running our weekly radio show alongside label peer Mawkus), a fresh crop of producers and DJs are elevating the music of NYC.

This compilation serves as a snapshot of this moment in time, spotlighting select artists making waves - including Jitwam, James Tillman, Toribio, Ensemble Entendu, David Marston and Tristan Arp. This project is also personal to Marco’s experience of digging deep into the city and connecting with kindred spirits, the selections reflecting the creative energy of his close musical family, who traverse eclectic sound spectrums from R&B/Soul, Balearic Grooves, House, Broken Beat and beyond.

Among the LPs that grace our turntables, Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunters" and Flying Lotus' "Until the Quiet Comes" stay in heavy rotation. Recognizing common threads across two incredible records released almost forty years apart, we asked ourselves an interesting question: What if Herbie and the Headhunters covered the work of FlyLo and his partner Thundercat? We've revisited this challenge on and off while developing our own new sounds.

Coincidentally, after we made some headway on this track we discovered that the sources of our inspiration had spent some time in the studio together. Apparently we weren't the only ones who recognized the musical kinship between these greats.
