Disco's revenge

I'm very honoured to bring you a recording of a live Nicky Holloway set way back from '88, which I believe is from a night called 'Devil May trip'.
The night was a collaboration between Nicky's 'Trip' night which he ran at The Astoria, and group of guy's who ran some amazing parties around the Uxbridge/Bucks area west of London around that time and before with their nights called 'Devil May Care'.

The tape is a real insight to the summer of '88, and personally my mind was officially blown the first night I walked into Trip at the Astoria, and was officially obsessed from there on in (like so many others).

This tape was kindly passed on to me for uploading by George Georgiou as   featured recently on his Instagram page. 
Originally recorded by Nicky H for George back in '88 following persistent nagging by George back at the time, and recently rediscovered amongst a crate of cassette tapes. 
'A reminder of some blinders' was one of Nicky's fave strap lines for his flyers, as he used to tell George. 

George has designed artworks for so many legendary clubs/nights which include Trip, Sin, Shoom, Special Branch, The Milk Bar, RAW & Velvet Underground to name just a few! 
As Dave Dorrell once said..."George Georgiou's unmistakable art - bold, minimal, primary - splashes electrically through London's nightlife story".

*Please note at 46.34 mins the A-side finishes, & B-side begins...hence the gap.

On a personal note, I would like to thank George for trusting me with this tape. I was a member at Trip, Sin & went to many a Nicky Holloway party way back before the acid house explosion hit these shores, with his 'Doo's' nights' and numerous times seeing him play at Eddie Gordon's Slammer party's in an old rough biker pub (Red Lion), playing alongside Pete Tong, Dave Dorrell & Giles Peterson (downstairs) before they hit the big time, all in a run down industrial part of North Kent circa mid 80's...happy sweaty days.

This mix is a tribute to my dearly departed brother, guru, mentor & Godfather of the UK electronic dance music scene, the legend that is Colin Faver.

For the new kids on the block who don't know who Colin Faver is, he's the reason that you're dancing & enjoying the global dance music scene as we know it.

Rewind to the post punk era of the early 80s. It's 1982 & Colin Faver gives up is job as a commercial graphic artist & is working for a record shop in Walthamstow London called Small Wonder records, who signed the first Cure & Bauhaus singles. It was then when the first wave of New Wave electronic music surfaced & Colin was mixing up electronic music at the New Romantic Institution that was the Camden Palace championing music from Kraftwerk to Afrika Bambaataa to Visage. It was this music that directly inspired the likes of Juan Atkins in Detroit & Frankie Knuckles (RIP) in Chicago, who were without doubt Colin's American counterparts in the birth of House & Techno Music in the mid 80s.

Colin remained the resident at the Camden Palace into the late 80s as well as being resident at Pyramid at Heaven & Jungle at Busbys playing House & Techno as it had never been heard before in the mid 80s. After this came Colin's residency at RIP at Clink Street in 1988, Dungeons in Lea Bridge Road in 1989, Rage at Heaven in 89-90, Knowledge in the early 90s & played at just about every top club in the UK that played dance music.

Colin was a regular DJ on London's Kiss FM when it was no more than a weekend pirate radio station in the mid 80s & held down a weekly radio show once Kiss became legal for the best part of 2 decades.

Colin Faver is the reason I got started in this scene, allowing me to rap with him at the Camden Palace in 1984 & fully taking me under his wing, along with Eddie Richards in early 1986 as their resident House Music rapper, way before I was a DJ in late 87, when these two huge influences became my colleagues on the decks too. I have everything to thank them both for as they were my mentors & influences.

This tribute mix is coincidentally 3:03 long & was mixed using 100% vinyl from the 80s & early 90s, is emotional & has been uploaded unedited, warts & all, with pure love from the heart.

My condolences go out to Colin's long term partner Brenda Russell & all those who loved him. Colin Faver R.I.P.

A very special 40th episode showcases arguably one of the best triple packs every released, especially considering it was relatively early in the timeline of mix cd history (1996). It features selections from Derrick Carter, Andrew Weatherall and Back to Basic's resident, Ralph Lawson.

We originally featured this CD in the early days of The Classic Mix CD Series, when it was recommended by Shindig's Scott Bradford as his most influential piece in his collection.

So it's fitting, that after more shouts out to use it from everyone on Facebook, that we feature all 3 discs for the 400th episode celebration. Thanks to everyone for getting involved all of the plays and positive messages.

Jon Da Silva is one of the original free-spirited Balearic DJs, and also a resident DJ at the infamous Hacienda club in Manchester in the late 1980s – one of the most important clubs in the history of dance culture. During this time, he mentored a certain DJ who had started calling himself Sasha before himself becoming a producer and remixer of some repute.

This Friday (21st June) Jon, now living in Sweden, is flying over for a Hacienda reunion, taking place at The Coronet in London. At the event, Peter Hook & The Light will perform a 'New Order Electronic Set' and 808 State will also play live.

The DJ line-up features many notable spinners from the Hacienda era, with Mike Pickering, Graeme Park, Jon Da Silva, Justin Robertson, K-Klass and Allister Whitehead joined by London's Danny Rampling for “a special midsummer event which recreates the spirit and unique atmosphere of The Hacienda”.

An avid record collector & clubber who fell into DJing by chance in 1984 at the age of 17 in a local club in South London playing an eclectic mix of Boogie, Motown, Electro & Jazz Funk. Soon after I became the tour DJ for (the songwriter & producer Mark Topham and his Jazz Funk band at that time) 'The Juice' back in the mid 80's. 
Acid House changed everything by the Spring of '88, Sean being a regular/member at Nicky Holloway's 'The Trip' London...by '89 he was resident DJ at a bar/club called 'The Trading Post' in South London, which lasted a number of years. Playing everything from Balearic & Italian 'piano' to eventually Progressive House, to a great crowd.
Throughout the 90s, Sean was playing regular slots at 'Dolly Rockers' & 'Just Cant Get Enough' plus lots of one-off parties. Warming up for the likes of Dave Dorrell, Judge Jules, Brandon Block, Chris & James & Leftfield's Paul Daley amongst many.
Playing at the 'Gardening Club', 'Legends', 'Maximus' & many other top venues at the time.

Sean still plays out today at selected vinyl only parties, so get in touch regarding bookings.
