Following the success of her singles "FORÇA" featuring AMORE and irenegarry, "JEALOUSY," and "LA MANO," which candidly explored themes like envy, lust, burnout, high expectations, and mental health in the creative industry, the complete project dives even deeper into Bikôko’s introspective world. In her own words, “A 1 IS BETTER THAN A 0 explores everyday life through a perfectionist and productivity-obsessed lens. The project comprises five songs, each representing aspects we often obsess over and their consequence”. These aspects are, THE OTHER - overwhelm, LA MANO - overworking, L’OSEILLE - overspending, JEALOUSY - overstimulation and FORÇA - overcontrol. 

On the project, Bikôkô shares, "For as long as I can remember, I have put pressure on myself to excel in all areas of my life, to the point where it became obsessive. It wasn’t enough to just work a few hours a day, buy only what I needed, or use social media moderately; I only felt like I was doing enough when I was doing it all the time. Of course, I ended up driving myself crazy and have had to step back ever since to rethink the way I do things. 

The title comes from a childhood anecdote. I had a friend in school who, despite being hardworking, didn’t get very good grades. One day, she was graded 1/10 on a test, and when she told her mother, she responded, "A 1 is better than a 0!" I find the phrase comforting. Sometimes, you just get a 1 in life, and that’s ok.”

London-based Spanish artist, Bikôkô, announces her forthcoming EP, A 1 IS BETTER THAN A 0, with candid new single, “Jealousy”. 

Produced in three parts over two years, with Raül Refree contributing, on “Jealousy” Bikôkô dives deep into difficult feelings of jealousy, alongside self-consciousness, comparison and overstimulation. Drawing on experiences with her lover and a rival, and calling for introspection and connection with her inner child, the rich warmth in the production - gentle guitar riffs, uplifting synths, and intricate percussion - act as a comfort blanket for the raw emotion behind the lyrics.

Bikôkô’s anticipated return comes following her debut solo release Aura Aura, and in line with upcoming performances at world-leading festivals including Primavera and Sonar. Several years in the making, A 1 IS BETTER THAN A 0, is due for release this October via Future Bounce.

Spanish artist Bikôkô shares her sentimental new single “La Mano”. A collaboration with esteemed producer Kwes Darko, featuring the sumptuous vocals of esteemed R&B artist, Crystal Murray, “La Mano” is a luxurious slice of experimental R&B, drawing on Bikoko’s own rich tapestry expansive influences and reflecting on her innermost thoughts. The single comes just ahead of another milestone for Bikôkô, performing opening sets for Brooklyn’s acclaimed soulful singer-songwriter/producer MADISON McFERRIN’s UK tour gigs in Manchester (YES), Bristol (Strange Brew) and London (Lower Third), across 4-6th July.

Following recent single “Jealousy”, on which Bikôkô reflected on difficult feelings in relationships via gentle guitar riffs, uplifting synths, and intricate percussion, ”La Mano” is the second offering from her anticipated upcoming EP, A 1 IS BETTER THAN A 0, a project on which Bikôkô truly wears her heart on her sleeve. 

Sonically, the single blends the vibrant rhythms of Senegalese sabar percussion with electronic synths and lush vocals. Lyrically, Bikôkô candidly opens up on the single, delving into the intense and often overwhelming obsession with productivity and work and the toll it can take on one's mental health. 

Bikôkô’s shares, “The inspiration for "La Mano" comes from a very personal place, as I navigated the challenges of sustaining a healthy work-life balance in an industry that often prioritizes numbers and output over well-being. This fusion of sounds is designed to evoke the powerful and dark emotions that come with the theme of the song. It's the most intense track I've ever made, aiming to mirror the very feelings it explores.”

Teaming up with Kwes Darko for the second time on her forthcoming EP, A 1 IS BETTER THAN A 0, the duo’s sonic synergy is at full force, with rich, textured instrumentals drawing from experimental electronic sounds and nods to R&B, soul, breaks and jazz. Throughout the track, the tension ebbs and flows; gentle percussion builds into chunky broken beats while Bikôkô’s signature, sultry tones float between the vocals of AMORE and irenegarry, which move from ethereal and floaty to chopped up and head-turning. 

“Força” (meaning strength in Catalan) offers further insight into Bikôkô's deep musings and self-reflection. On recently released singles “Jealousy” and “LA MANO”, Bikôkô’ delved into envy and lust and the impact of excessive workloads in the creative industry on her mental health. On “Força,” Bikoko reflects further on her high expectations and meticulous approach to work, as well as the overwhelm and burnout that can follow, but here, it’s told through the context of how a dog lives. 

The idea for the single was born when Bikoko found herself singing the song ‘Friday’ by Laura Groves. After translating the lyrics into Catalan, she found the inspiration that would evolve into “Força”. This is the third offering from her anticipated upcoming EP; A 1 IS BETTER THAN A 0, a project on which Bikôkô truly wears her heart on her sleeve. 

In Bikôkô’s own words, “I have always been very demanding of myself, and as self-employed, there are so many aspects of my life and career that are up to me to decide and organise. I’ve come close to burnout multiple times over the years. When overwhelmed, I feel like I’m going to drown and need everything to stop. When writing the lyrics for ‘Força', I told my story by romanticising a dog’s life, in which every decision is taken for them (when to eat, walk, sleep..), and all they have to do is just exist, and it’s enough. And I imagine how freeing that would be.”
