Originally released on CD in 1994 and reissued in 2006, this is the first time Arthur Russell's Another Thought has been released on vinyl.

Arthur Russell's Another Thought was first released posthumously in 1994, two years after his death. The tracks date from between 1982 to around 1990, catalogued from over 800 tape reels by Mikel Rouse for Point Music, and produced by Don Christensen. While it is a collection of tracks in various stages of completion, often sparse and direct, it is perhaps the most sonically coherent album ever released of Russell’s material. Another Thought includes appearances by trombonist Peter Zummo, percussionist Mustafa Ahmed, additional vocals by composers Julius Eastman and Elodie Lauten, plus Joyce Bowden, Jennifer Warnes and Steven Hall.

Arthur Russell (1951-1992) would have been 70 last week and to commemorate his life and works Steve KIW has dug into his collection of Russell's work for another of his artist specials.

A trained cellist and composer Russell is primarily known for his collaborative work on some of the all time great disco music; as one of Loose Joints and Dinosaur L and as a co-founder of Sleeping Bag Records he reached a wider audience than the downtown NYC scene that had embraced him in the 70s. Throughout the 80s he dazzled and surprised, recording seminal leftfield tracks and 'challenging' albums such as World Of Echo. Since his death his recordings have been made widely available as tapes continue to be unearthed and shared.

Francesca is back with her art inspired radio show Architextures. 
This time the show will be based on minimalism
Emerging in New York in the 1960s, the art world moved on from the expressive and gestural paintings of the abstract expressionists and focused on sculptural objects, often from the every day, which in the words of philosopher Richard Wollheim ‘had minimal art content’. Often geometric, monochrome, engineered and in simple forms, this pared-down visual art movement sought to represent a simplified aesthetic, encouraging the viewer to focus on the material and structure, which was often geometric. 
Minimalism in music emerged simultaneously; musicians like John Cage, Terry Riley, and Philip Glass reflected the ethos of the art world, employing limited and minimal musical materials. Repetitive musical patterns or pulses, steady drones, consonant harmonies call attention to the activity of listening, by focusing on the internal processes of the music. Tune in this evening!
