It's tax season and the IRS says it will process tax returns and pay out refunds on time despite the 35-day partial government shutdown that furloughed many of their employees. The agency estimates that it will receive 150 million individual income tax filings and says that it should be "seamless" despite the complicated new tax law, which went into effect in 2018. Taxes continue to be debated among the two political parties and some Democratic members of Congress, including Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and New York Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio Cortez, are talking about the need for a higher marginal tax rate. And Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is pushing a repeal of the estate tax, which affects fewer than 2,000 people a year, who have estates of over $11.2 million or more than $22.4 million for couples. Joining us to discuss all of this are Richard Prisinzano, Senior Economist with the Penn Wharton Budget Model who has 13 years of experience in the Office of Tax Analysis at the Treasury Department, and Alan Auerbach, Professor of Economics and Law, as well as Director of the Burch Center for Tax Policy and Public Finance at the University of California-Berkeley.
