“’Light That Shines’ came about from messing around with a riff stored on my phone, coupled with some words that landed in my head when I was thinking about the last time, I saw my Nan. Nans are amazing people, aren’t they? When you’re old enough to have really good questions to ask them, it’s too late. Ben came up with the main chorus line which was really great and we decided to try a duet type thing which works really well I think.”

‘Long Lash’ started life as riff back in 2016 when I was trying to write some songs for the first time,” said Shirlow, to date the band’s main songwriter. “The lyrics came quite quickly and are based around a freak eyelash that I woke up with one day. It had grown to about 10cm long overnight, which sounds like absolute bullshit but is totally true. I started to lament the weird, mildly annoying stuff that starts to happen when you get older but which doesn’t actually matter in the grand scheme of things, like grey hair, cracking knees, needing naps and so on. Hardly rock song material really, but you know.”

"‘Better’ is a happy song about crappy things ending" said Rob Shirlow the songs writer. "More specifically relationships and things in your life that are totally toxic but for some reason you don’t see it or don’t want to see it, or just can’t imagine that this thing which you think you really love or is important to you is actually really bad for you and messing you up and then it ends. The joy that comes from being released from such awful situations can be quite immense, and that’s what this song is about, really. It’s not about one specific relationship, more a theme of past experiences, some work situations of the past, social groups or ‘friends’ you realise were just truly awful things in your life...when they end, the big breathe out and ‘Oh my god what was I thinking!?’ moments.” Shirlow goes on to say “Musically it starts off a bit Britpop of all things, but I like to think we channel The Clash once it gets going. It’s a favourite to play live and is cathartic to sing and just let it all go!”

Slowdive EP is 25 years old. It was released by Creation Records on November 5th, 1990.

When the band reformed for 2014, it seemed obvious to us to start our live shows by playing the Slowdive EP at the top of the set list. It sets out where we originally came from, and sets the scene for where we were going. And to celebrate that, we'd like to present a free live recording of Avalyn, performed during our USA / Canada tour last year. We are currently working on releasing the entire live set from that tour as a collection, so look out for news of that soon.
