The baritone aria “Il cavallo scalpita” introduces Alfio, the cuckolded husband in CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA. A teamster who drives his cart from village to village, Alfio describes his job—pressing on despite rain, wind, and snow, accompanied by the tramp of the horse’s feet, the pealing of the bells, and the crack of his whip—to a crowd of envious villagers. Cal Stewart Kellog conducted Ron Peo as Alfio with the chorus and orchestra of Seattle Opera.
