August 4-18, 2012 Seattle Opera's TURANDOT starred Lori Phillips, Antonello Palombi, Lina Tetriani, Peter Rose, Marcy Stonikas, Luis Chapa, Grazia Doronzio, Patrick Carfizzi, Julius Ahn, and Joseph Hu. Asher Fisch conducted the chorus and orchestra of Seattle Opera.

One of opera’s most beloved arias, this lovely nocturne is sung by a mysterious unknown prince who has bested the ice princess Turandot in her life-or-death riddle game—but who, instead of claiming her as his bride, has asked her to solve the riddle of his identity. He is confident that she will fall in love with him before the night is over.

Puccini’s answer to Verdi’s Triumphal March from “Aida” is this glorious music played as we enter the throne room of the Forbidden City for the Riddle Game in Act Two of “Turandot”. The traditional solo melody played by brass that concludes this excerpt was also used in the 1916 musical “Chu Chin Chow,” written by Oscar Asche with music by Frederick Norton. Ping (Patrick Carfizzi), Pang (Julius Ahn), and Pong (Joseph Hu) try to stop the Unknown Prince (Antonello Palombi) from striking the gong to announce himself as Turandot's next suitor. Based on a traditional Chinese melody Puccini heard in Baron Fassini's music box, this lively trio introduces three memorable characters inspired by the clowns of traditional Italian commedia dell'arte, who try to scare the prince away with descriptions of the horrors that await unsuccessful suitors, and to reason with him: "Forget about women, or else take a hundred wives! That way you'll have two hundred arms and a hundred sweet bosoms strewn over a hundred beds!" Asher Fisch conducts the Seattle Opera Orchestra on 8/4/2012. Photo by Elise Bakketun.

Marcy Stonikas sings Magda Sorel in “The Consul” at Seattle Opera in 2014. A graduate of Seattle Opera's Young Artists Program, the American soprano sang Princess Turandot at Seattle Opera in 2012. Here she tells the Unknown Prince, "Horror of the one who killed [Princess Lou-ling, Turandot's ancestor] lives on in my heart. No one will ever have me! The pride of so much innocence is reborn in me. Stranger, do not tempt fate. The riddles are three: death is one." Asher Fisch conducts the orchestra of Seattle Opera; Luis Chapa sings the Prince. When the Unknown Prince solves her three riddles, Princess Turandot (Lori Phillips) begs and pleads, imploring her father not to give her away to a man "like a slave dying of shame." But Emperor Altoum (Peter Kazaras) is implacable: "The oath is sacred." Asher Fisch conducts the orchestra of Seattle Opera.
