The Art of Spiritual Direction - Foundations, Practice, and Applications (Session I of III)

In this episode of Discerning Leadership, Dr. Greg Magnan and Dr. Erin Vernon explore the relationship between leadership and systems thinking, emphasizing the importance of feedback loops, respect in education, and the challenges of navigating polarizing topics. They speak on how leaders can effectively engage with complex systems and foster respectful conversations, ultimately shaping the dynamics and outcomes of their environments. 

Moving Through Systems: Feedback and Respectful Learning

Dr. Bruce Miller is Professor of Sociocultural Anthropology at the University of British Columbia.  His research interests include anthropology of law, ethnography, ethno-history of Coast Salish of BC and Washington; indigenous worldwide, and state-Indigenous relations.

Ongoing research concerning international borders and Indigenous peoples, the use of Human Rights Tribunals by Indigenous peoples, the ways in which legal processes redefine Indigenous peoples and rights, and non-recognized Indigenous peoples.  Dr. Miller has served as a scholar at the Center for Religious Wisdom & World Affairs.

Dr. Bruce Miller - The Coast Salish Spiritual Traditions and Homelessness

Dr. Sathianathan (“Sathi”) Clarke is a presbyter of the Church of South India. Dr. Clarke bridges the world between establishment and the marginalized, the global and the local, and academy and the congregation. For several years (1996-2004), he was on the faculty at United Theological College, Bangalore, India. He was also a visiting professor at Harvard Divinity School. For the last twenty years, he has taught and lectured on global Christianity, contextual theology, postcolonial mission, and interreligious dialogue in India, U.S.A., United Kingdom, Germany, Sri Lanka, Korea, South Africa, and Liberia. In his research and teaching, Dr. Clarke has cultivated specialties in contextual theology, constructive global theology, and theology of religions. His current projects include:

Dr. Sathianathan ("Sathi") Clarke - Both Wisdom and Failure in Addressing Homelessness

Roberto Mata discusses the connections between the Hebrew Scriptures and homelessness.  Dr. Mata received his M.Div. and Th.D. in New Testament/Early Christianity from Harvard Divinity School. As an assistant professor of contextual biblical studies, his research explores the intersection of colonialism, race/ethnicity, and migration, among other topics, in New Testament texts in general, and the book of Revelation in particular. In his teaching, Dr. Mata often employs critical pedagogies as well as borderlands, postcolonial and critical race theories to help students map the power relations inscribed in biblical texts as well as their implications for the common good. Dr. Mata is also a Center Scholar at Seattle University’s Center for Religious Wisdom and World Affairs. He is a recipient of Harvard’s Derek Bok Center Award for teaching excellence and Harvard Divinity School’s William’s Fellowship. He has also received fellowships from the Hispanic Theological Initiative (HTI) and the Forum for Theological Exploration (FTE).

Dr. Roberto Mata -- A reading of the Hebrew Scriptures and Homelessness

John A. Coleman S.J., is an associate pastor at St. Ignatius Church in San Francisco. For many years he was the Casassa Professor of Social Values at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Father Coleman served as a scholar at the Center for Religious Wisdom & World Affairs
