Ending the year on a high having witnessed a plethora of musical highlights, Meanwhile has been a shining beacon for progressive house throughout 2021. Now, Australian, Mike Rish, becomes the latest debutant to showcase his talents on GMJ & Matter’s blossoming imprint with the 3-track “Beyond” EP.

From his home on Australia’s south-eastern coast, Mike Rish has witnessed an impressive rise to notoriety, courtesy of a clutch of high-profile releases on an exclusive set of blue-chip labels. Not wanting to flood the progressive house scene with a swathe of formulaic dance music, the Melbourne resident’s “selective output” is based on a carefully thought-out commitment to “keep people engaged, but also wanting more”. Thus, Rish’s work for the likes of Colorize, Serendeep and Juicebox Music, has seen the Australian carve out a sizeable niche for himself, further enhanced by March 2021’s 12-track “Interlinked” album for UGENIUS Music.

Opening his Meanwhile account with the “Beyond” title track, a chunky beat and cavernous bass groove sit tightly against off-beat hats and snare. Filtering into sonic range, an elegant arpeggio provides glorious melodic interplay as white-noise washes and meandering pads pulse gently across the near 10-minute piece. Full of spine-tingling atmosphere, additional melodic phrasing is introduced at the breakdown before extending into the third movement with ease, combined with a raft of effects and masterful touches.

A bouncing bass groove immediately finds “Mindgame” oozing with hypnotic force and low-end menace. Sat perfectly in between deep kick and ticking hats, a flowing melodic line ripples across proceedings as it rises and falls with filtered dynamism. Twisted vocal cuts and acetylene-edged synth effects pitch with glissando range adding to the aural collage in a track full of dark and mesmerising beauty.

Closing the EP, “Here For You” is characterised by an intricate percussive arrangement that introduces a subtle melodic backdrop. Effects and textured pads span the stereo stage in modulated glory as a pulsating lead melody enters the fray in the second movement. Building steadily before revealing itself fully in the stripped back breakdown, the second half blossoms in commanding fashion with a pulsating confluence of rhythm and melody. The result is a track that illustrates Mike Rish’s unique talent and technique.

A musical triptych full of innovation and sonic narrative, Mike Rish has gone above and “Beyond” with a glittering display of production prowess.

Continuing a strong start to the year, Madloch's Sound Avenue imprint welcomes Domingo + back to the label for his first solo EP. As one half of the Mariner + Domingo duo, American artist Chris Domingo has compiled an impressive resume across an eighteen-month stretch. Upon making his debut on Balkan Connection in July of 2020, the Florida resident went on a remarkable run, landing releases via 3rd Avenue, Proton Music, RYNTH, and The Purr. Perhaps his most comfortable landing spot was Madloch's long-standing Sound Avenue imprint, where Mariner + Domingo released ten originals across ten months, none more impactful than ‘Another Life' and ‘Inertia', which earned play and support from Lee Burridge and Sebastien Leger respectively.
Now embarking on his future musical endeavors in solo capacity, Domingo + returns to Sound Avenue with a two-track showcase entitled ‘Hardway'.

As Domingo + continues to operate at a creative peak, it is the jubilant sounds of ‘Hardway' which set the course for this new career path. Played out over seven sun-drenched minutes, a storyboard of vocal fragments and Mediterranean motifs gets intertwined with chunky bass tones, clustered chimes, and dusty percussion. Sitting at the heart of the journey, a spirited interlude carries the youthful spirit of the vocal, set against a backdrop of aquatic cascades, before eventually melting down into a glowing finale.

Coming in deeper and more organic is the companion piece ‘Falling Apart'. Acting as an ideal complement to its predecessor, a forest of exotic drums and juxtaposed vocal phrasing paints a contemplative narrative. Mysterious and mystical, the main break furthers the affectionate vocal, sitting amidst muted tones and flickering percussion, before giving way to an unassuming drop and tastefully restrained conclusion. It rounds out two exceptional tracks from Domingo +, who not only makes a triumphant return to Sound Avenue, but gets his solo endeavors off to a tremendous start.

Mike Griego returns to the label with an incredible new EP. 

Enigmatic and unique, Mike Griego has carved out a flourishing career and his musically rich signature sound has been making waves for nearly 15 years. Signed to a number of influential labels including Replug, Tale + Tone and Balance Music, Mike feels at home with expressing his artistic vision through progressive house. 

Opening the EP with 'A Lydian Prophacy' disco bass and bongo rhythms combine with eerie synthlines for a wondrous soundscape affair. Mellow and hypnotic, the melodics ebb and flow through out creating different textures and feels. Continuing the theme, 'New School Prog' serves as somewhat a blueprint of the direction progressive house might take. Dubby and detailed, each element has a place; never feeling rushed and overused. 'Outta Time' acts perfectly as the finalé with it's subtle intro whetting the appetite perfectly. Deep, groovy, and utterly Griego, this is a stand out EP from a producer at the top of his game.

French producer Rick Pier O'Neil is no stranger in the industry, earning his reputation from energetic peak-time production throughout many many years.
