Butterfly is a single presented in three distinct versions, each offering a unique perspective on one central musical idea.

The main track opens with a delicate Moog sequence that gradually blossoms into a flowing felt piano motif. This progression mirrors a metamorphosis—symbolizing the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly, both sonically and conceptually.

The two companion versions zoom in on the gentle piano theme. By shifting tempo and texture, they unfold into their own quiet spaces—each one intimate, warm, and introspective, offering a softer lens on the original idea.

I go to a fair to buy better rags
And I have the gold in my hand,
The slender man stretches beside me,
And links his arm in mine. 
Soon after that I am tipsy,
I don't care if I'm worn and cold,
Gone is the gold and with it the memory
of seven months without a coat,
and winters crushing hold.

He's slim, dark and handsome,
cunning, well-read, and cool as the snow,
I groaned in pain and I sunk,
in a doorway so damp.
I'd go to Moher or Dún Briste,
and leap from the cliffs,
I can work for him no more,
If only I could be away one a day.

The Banshee Aibell met us,
On the way I needed to go;
She said if the slim black boy would comply
That a hundred men would lock him up in a tower.
The slender man spoke sharply to her,
He said that his friend would not abandon him,
That he walked Ireland through woods and fields
With his company of wastrels raggedly following him.

Today, I’m sharing the second version of my track Butterfly (with the third and final version coming next week alongside the official release). This Slow Piano Version is noticeably slower and more atmospheric than the previously released Piano Solo Version, offering a gentler, more introspective experience.

Butterfly (Slow Piano Version)

Started in early 2024, the album was supposed to be an EP consisting of several tracks, but after going through multiple transformations, during which original piano pieces were turning into crossover electronic versions with full arrangement and back, spinning in interrupted rehearsal cycles, becoming closer to recording and then drifting away from it as Jan was moving between continents, countries and towns and the world was precipitating toward the disaster to then shy away from it.

While the left-hand figures and time signatures, as well as the task of finding a tittle for every piece, were getting ever more intricate, the choice of the instrument that could convey at least the unwordable part was, on the contrary, getting increasingly clear.

Et voilà, here it is: a perfectionist's take on imperfection, a long-exposure shot of a world pulling itself out of the catastrophe, graffiti on a Berlin subway wall, grand piano take B, an apartment in the centre of Madrid with a view on the sea of chimneys and antennas, the desperate lack of words somehow masked with the noise of the Pacific.

i do often still think most days of my life about how different it could've been if it hadn't turned out exactly the way it did and part of me will always be angry and confused but more than anything i think i'm often gripped with such a violent sense of desiderium because i know it will never be that way again. the pain of absence is much too sharp and i would give anything to not know it. perhaps in another life we're still dancing together.
