Mullaert?

Fresh from the beautiful collaborative fusion of his and Ulf Eriksson’s unique, boundary-blurring, moment-in-time ‘The Dance’, Sebastian Mullaert returns with another future-focused dispatch from his secretive soundlab tucked away deep in the Swedish forests. 

An eight minute freeform jazz-minded jam that owes just as much to Bugge as it does the Belleville Three, ‘You’re An Orchestra In The Cosmos’ is a luxurious, lolloping groove peppered with cosmic improvisation and a faraway star-gazing spoken word. It’s also a discussion on the chaos of shared perception and the paradox of cosmic harmony. Sebastian explains it best…
“The cosmos guides us all. It moves us, beyond time and age, it belongs to us. We are the cosmos.

“We each look at the same molecules in an object, the same physical features on a person, the same stars in a constellation, but each of us sees these differently, each of us has a different experience. It is this experience that we need to give time to, listen to, and understand. It’s only then that we can become an instrument in the orchestra of the cosmos.

“The cosmos is the greatest paradox of life. It guides us - some would say it even conducts us, but without us it does not exist. It is in this silent desolation that we, a cacophony of individuals, create the harmony of existence through our connected individual interpretations of every atom, being and thing.”

As with every project that has preceded this and the ones that will succeed it, Sebastian has invested every atom of his soul and thought into the original and his three different versions: his lean and trippy Blinkarp dub, the softer focus Rhodes version and the spacious dub hypnosis of his Wa Wu We remix. Label boss Joris Voorn has also offered his own interpretation of Mullaert’s musical molecules: strapping us tightly into his euphoric rocket, he provides a deep trip into peaktime nebular. 

However you perceive it, however you let the cosmos guide you, you are the orchestra and right now Mullaert plays the consummate conductor. As he says himself, give this time, listen to it, understand it, experience it…

Before Genius of Time forged their reputation as one of the most impressive hardware acts, not to mention flat-out nicest dudes, in the game, Dorisburg rode solo with music in a similar vein; once they took off, that moniker got put in the cryogenic freezer. Dials were set to 'dethaw' in 2015, and so we arrive now at "Dimension Sculpture". Release nº3 from upstart imprint Myth Music (steered by our very own lovely host-programmer-überdon Baron Castle, fact fans) comes with a tempting edit from label co-founder Lando on the flip, but we needed to let the A-side loose. It's choppy, dark, infectious and guaranteed to melt faces – and quite possibly support beams, too – in packed basements and festival tents across the entire summer, and beyond.

The first 6 episodes of the Wa Wu We label will form a collection of records, united by their signicant and unique cover art and the way they've been recorded; this being the focus on improvising expression, resting in meditation and the nature surrounding Sebastian's studio. All 6 of these episodes will be limited to 500 copies each.

Sebastian Mullaert Boiler Room Berlin Live Set

Lo and behold; today marks the very last instalment in our ten-part Debut series with 50WEAPONS. What better way to round it off than with a 12" of techno head-splitters from two notable Berlin heads – FJAAK and Dystopian head, Rødhåd. A powerful combination that cements Berlin's ever strong, unfaltering plight in the techno world of today.

Rødhåd's 50WEAPONS inauguration may be delayed but, falling in at catalogue number #049 (close second to the grand finale), it's better late than ever. In the Elder Scrolls game-inspired "Oblivion", factory line drums pummel softly underneath, whilst faint synth sirens circle overhead. We can almost feel the smoke-filled, strobe-lit warehouse now. A noble sendoff to the prestigious 50W imprint, with some much revered Dystopian flavour. R.I.P. 50WEAPONS

We're happy to present the recording of Sebastian Mullaert and Ulf Ericksson's live/dj set at the Labyrinth 2015. Seb and Ulf played the first night, entitled "Full Circle". It was a set where everything came together beautifully and organically, crowd and artists and music, and we all felt it was something worth sharing.

Here is the full 3.5 hour recording, together with a few words from Seb and Ulf: 

"For me, everything comes and goes in circles. And like everything else these circles are unpredictable; spiralling and reformulating like a kaleidoscope. Manifestations of patterns in this very moment; Consciousness.

I played the first edition of Labyrinth, had a few returns during the years and now returned for the 15th edition. Russ and Yasuyo, together with their Mindgames crew, have always performed their festival with a focused and radical mind; one intention, one passion - to create a psychedelic experience of dance surrounded by the Japanese nature. While the festival has grown in many ways since my first episode at Labyrinth, this radical focus on the mind-altering experience and the true love for dance have remained the same, with no sign of resignation.

This year I shared the stage together with Ulf Eriksson; a friend who has become a very special creative collaborator. To be a part of Labyrinth and to play this specific gig is the most magical experiential puzzle of moments I've shared with Ulf. This is an experience that will continue to remind us why we are doing this – why we are part of this ever shifting circle, spiralling into inspiration upon aspiration - something that never stops. I'm forever thankful to Russ and Yasuyo both for giving us the opportunity to play, sharing this recording and also creating a series of experiences and stimulations, resulting in each of us that listens as individuals becoming a part of something bigger and more all-encompassing – a circle that connects us beyond the realms of materialism, into the unpredictable.

Russ, Yasuyo and the Labyrinth are a true source of inspiration and a reminder to all of us in love with dance and electronic music that there is no end to the power of experience.

"To play the Labyrinth festival has always been a bit of a dream of mine. Why, I do not know exactly. Maybe it's because it takes place far away, in Japan. Maybe it's because of all the stories you have heard from the festival. Maybe it's because of the unique tribal mystic that surrounds it, in combination with the nature of the location. Maybe it's because of the small group of artists, who all become like family for a few days. I do not know. But what I do know is that this dream has always been there and I am sure I share I it with a lot of musicians and DJs around the world. Anyway, 2015 I was lucky enough to be offered a slot, due in large part to my collaboration with Sebastian Mullaert, who already played there many times, both as Son Kite and as Minilogue.

So there we were behind the Labyrinth tipi, me and Sebastian, ready to go. Or, rather, not ready at all. We had prepared each to our selves but never found the time to meet up and rehearse together. I remember that Sebastian looked at me just before the set, and said something like: "I will not be sad or disappointed if things do not go well". I guess he was trying to calm me down since he knew I was kind of nervous. Anyway, off we went and thankfully, for some unknown reason, it was one of those gigs where everything just felt right.

So here is the recording. I still have not listened to it, and I do not think I will. I think I prefer to stay with the live memory of how it sounded. But I do hope that you will listen to the set, and that it will give you pleasure and meaning, just as my memory of it."

Sebastian Mullaert is well known for his work as one half of the highly respected Swedish duo Minilogue, responsible for killer releases for the likes of Cocoon, Crosstown Rebels and Wagon Repair, alongside breathtaking live shows as a solo outfit as well as their joint live act with Matthew Jonson.

Working from the idilic setting of the mystical Swedish forest, Sebastian Mullaert has has been making serious waves on his solo artist journey, lending his signature hypnotic sound to labels like Mule Musiq, Drumcode, Minus, Kontra-Musik and Ovum. His one of a kind spellbinding live show is illuminating the world’s finest stages such as Panorama Bar - Berlin, Concrete - Paris, Fabric - London, Labyrinth Festival - Japan, Black Market - NYC to name a few and can be witnessed on his recent Boiler Room and XLR8R sessions. 

At nearly 13 tantric minutes long, ‘Windmaker’ bubbles and teases with freestyle keys with an almost Middle Eastern flavour, as Mullaert plays snake charmer to his machines, coaxing out deft melodies, airy cymbals and on point beats and percussion.  It’s a track to completely get lost in, crafted with fine sonics and a gloss that only an artist like Mullaert can achieve with ease.

The enigmatic Ukranian producer, Vakula, is drafted in to give a re-interpretation of ‘Windmaker’; edgy phased stabs puncture the minimal techno beat, bouncing and reverberating off the kick drum to create a glorious wall of dubby sound that compliments the original mix a treat.  Vakula has always impressed with his creative and original music for labels like Firecracker, Dekmantel and his own Leleka imprint, so it’s a privilege to have him remix on Hypercolour.

Art flourishes when the freedom, flow and creativity intersect. Often a direct response to resistance, art transcends borders and the physical to allow transmission of the soul; emotion and consciousness. Be Yōkai, a collaborative project between three artists, represents these core values uniting music with art and the moving picture. At the convergent point between these three disciplines we find Be Yōkai, driven by rhythm and vibration, while delivering progressive, transcendent visual stimulation.

In this free zone they flourish, as their art flows out of them without a hint of resistance. It’s the kind of freedom that many artists strive to achieve with no pressure, no deadlines and no strict briefs to uphold. The notion of trust, encouragement, confidence in one’s approach is what we find with Be Yōkai. All three men have known each other for over a decade, and worked closely together during that time on several occasions. This foundation keeps their relationship strong and provides a comfortable layer upon which they are building an intriguing project.

Sebastian Mullaert, Douglas Holmquist and illustrator/animator Kristofer Ström are the three creative wonders who stand behind Be Yōkai. Each member of the trio has a longstanding relationship with their particular skill, as well as each other.

Sebastian’s musical endeavours have taken him around the world, both as a solo practioner and in the duo known as Minilogue, among other projects. Douglas an accomplished composer for film animations, advertisements and video games, as well as making club music. Kristofer, a world-renowned illustrator and animation specialist, who is also adept when it comes to making music.

From the very beginning, the group have worked in an unplanned, natural, organic way, exchanging music and visuals with each member contributing to the progress of each track and accompanying video. It’s a project that acts as its own catalyst, as the three artists contribute their respective talents to the final product, bit by bit, without having a defined goal or target.

In this way they allow for a smooth flow in their production process, which is crucial to their ideals. This is not a ‘hit-making machine’, nor is it a project that has any pre-conceived ambitions towards “success”. All three men agree that Be Yōkai represents an organic, intermittent working process that is not bound by the constraints of future pressures. With Be Yōkai the three men have a space to inspire one another and to be liberated from target-based composition.

It is the only way they can operate, with three separate lives and careers, they have to consider the dynamic and unpredictable flow of life itself. Attempting to control this wild beast is futile, so they work on the project as and when possible. Eventually there is the hope of taking Be Yōkai to the stage, for a concert style performance with live instrumentation accompanied by Kristofer’s mind-boggling visuals. This is something all three artists agree on, but it’s not something they are desperate for. It will happen, all in good time, as everything will if you trust enough in the power of being…

Cinematique Visions 040 - Boss Axis

On this episode we invited Sergei Kuznetsov, a.k.a. Microb, he is a techno and electro music lover from Vladivostok, Primorskiy region of Russia. Microb started as a DJ in the beginning of 2010 and now he’s one of the residents of the oldest Far East dance music festival 'MostRave' (Khabarovsk) and many other events like United Movement team production (Vladivostok). In his sets, he prefers atmospheric and hypnotic sounds, always influenced by his techno roots.
During the last two years he lived and performed in Italy, China, Vietnam, and Korea, where he is currently residing.

Since coming together in 2006, Superlounge have been solidifying their moniker in the minimalist and deep house genre, making them a perfect fit for the 'All Day I Dream Summer Sampler 2017'. Known for his work as one half of Minilogue, Sebastian is also an accomplished solo artist with new material ready to roll. Sebastian's deep connection with music can be traced back to his formative years; from playing the organ and violin as a child, to performing in orchestras, string quartets and pop band, progressing into electronic music in his late teens. Discovering house and techno in the mid-nineties was the catalyst behind a revolution in his life, he set out on a new musical pathway, to promote the simplicity of being. Throughout the late nineties he experimented with electronic sounds, forming cult duo Minilogue with a friend and releasing with Crosstown Rebels, Traum Schallplatten, Wagon Repair and more, plus two albums via Cocoon – ‘Animals’ (2008) and ‘Blomma’ (2013). In 2014, the duo decided to take a break and invest their time in solo projects and Sebastian has since been hard at work cultivating a collection of new music already snapped up by hugely influential labels such as R&S sub-label Apollo, Drumcode, Hypercolour and Minus.

Sebastian Mullaert’s live performances are awe-inspiring, combining technical wizardry with energy, atmosphere and euphoria, you only have to watch his “Interpretations” performance for XLR8R or Boiler Room appearance for examples of his prowess. Recognition of his aptitude has led him to perform at institutions and festivals such as Panorama Bar - Berlin, Labyrinth Festival - Japan, Fabric - London, Concrete - Paris, The Block - Tel Aviv and Blackmarket - NYC. 

Sebastian’s collaborative work runs parallel to his solo endeavours and he has teamed up with several figures in the techno world to produce some unforgettable releases. Collaborators include Mathew Jonson, Eitan Reiter, Aril Brikha and Ulf Eriksson, and releases have come via underground platforms such as Hypnus, Mule Musiq and Kontra Musik. He also produces under the alias Wa Wu We, offering a serene, understated take on the techno aesthetic. Furthermore he is involved in the new Be Yokai project, a trio formed of Sebastian, Douglas Holmquist and Kristoffer Ström. The three men formed a natural alliance, finding their flow after several sessions together. Their first EP is signed to Hypercolour sub-label Space Hardware, with a live show and more music in the pipeline.

Sebastian Mullaert is already established as a potent force in the world of electronic music. Serious about reminding people to BE on the dance floor, or in the comfort of their own home, the music he makes is deep, progressive and utterly unique.
