This track started with some interesting strings recordings Tom made, where he arranged the instruments in terms of their frequency range, from the lowest in the centre to the highest on the edges. He provided my with a few unused recordings of this session and I sort of brutalised them, in as much as the end result sounds nothing at all like the original recordings. I just liked the timbre and texture that occurred when I cut them up, with each hit being a complex mixture of chords, one bleeding into the other so that a lot of the samples are quite impure melodically.

It just turned into an experiment of what I could do with these odd melodic units, or quanta of the original tentet, hence the name - Quantet. In the end I went for a very simple stripped back approach, nothing too unexpected or complex in this one, but hopefully a nice mood, that was the aim anyway.

Quantet - with Tom Hodge - FIELDS

This track is about emergence from the combination of polar opposites. Fragments of self from very different places, but part of the same whole.

Combining classical and computational elements is something I've been experimenting with for some years, but this attempt to combine the extreme opposites of each was spurred on by some chance DJing experiments, a fortuitous collaboration opportunity, and the amazing work of my friends Olafur Arnalds and Vaetxh (Rob Clouth). I found that I could mix the most beautiful and delicate piano solo of Olafur, with the most hyper-edited and jarring glitch of Vaetxh, and that the result actually worked, well, for me anyway, even if half the people in the club stood confused about how to dance. So when the opportunity arose to work with the pianist and composer Tom Hodge, I wanted to try and create this form of merger of extremes for a release, rather than it being confined to my DJ toolbox (also on the classical meets glitch history from a slightly different angle, check out "Rossz Csillag Alatt Született" from Venetian Snares 2005!).

After some discussion of ideas and approach with Tom, he sat and played and made some recordings for me, which I then chopped and build chords and structure around, sent them back to him to play over the top of again, and then back to me to edit and glitch the playing along with the nasty noises. My detailing process was that of finding some interesting sound sources (binaural recordings, drum hit samples, clangs and slams etc) and using some Max for live randomisation chains to generate lots of partially random complexity which I could then edit as audio before repeating the process with additional layers, eventually bringing the recorded piano audio in to the editing too.

At completion of the audio I was really happy to find out that Nick Cobby, one of my favourite video artists and long standing collaborator, was available and interested in working on the visual side of the project. He took the combination of seemingly incompatible opposites, and applied it visually with his beautiful generative forms, smooth and organic for the melodic sections, and jagged and abrasive for the percussive sections - big thanks to Nick for his amazing work as always!

So, that's probably enough ranting about this track from me, aside from why it is like it is, I hope it's something that you can enjoy irrespective of the conceptual faff.

Occult Feat Mr Jo "Mesopatamia" (Audialist Remix)[Out Now]

We're happy to present the recording of Sebastian Mullaert and Ulf Ericksson's live/dj set at the Labyrinth 2015. Seb and Ulf played the first night, entitled "Full Circle". It was a set where everything came together beautifully and organically, crowd and artists and music, and we all felt it was something worth sharing.

Here is the full 3.5 hour recording, together with a few words from Seb and Ulf: 

"For me, everything comes and goes in circles. And like everything else these circles are unpredictable; spiralling and reformulating like a kaleidoscope. Manifestations of patterns in this very moment; Consciousness.

I played the first edition of Labyrinth, had a few returns during the years and now returned for the 15th edition. Russ and Yasuyo, together with their Mindgames crew, have always performed their festival with a focused and radical mind; one intention, one passion - to create a psychedelic experience of dance surrounded by the Japanese nature. While the festival has grown in many ways since my first episode at Labyrinth, this radical focus on the mind-altering experience and the true love for dance have remained the same, with no sign of resignation.

This year I shared the stage together with Ulf Eriksson; a friend who has become a very special creative collaborator. To be a part of Labyrinth and to play this specific gig is the most magical experiential puzzle of moments I've shared with Ulf. This is an experience that will continue to remind us why we are doing this – why we are part of this ever shifting circle, spiralling into inspiration upon aspiration - something that never stops. I'm forever thankful to Russ and Yasuyo both for giving us the opportunity to play, sharing this recording and also creating a series of experiences and stimulations, resulting in each of us that listens as individuals becoming a part of something bigger and more all-encompassing – a circle that connects us beyond the realms of materialism, into the unpredictable.

Russ, Yasuyo and the Labyrinth are a true source of inspiration and a reminder to all of us in love with dance and electronic music that there is no end to the power of experience.

"To play the Labyrinth festival has always been a bit of a dream of mine. Why, I do not know exactly. Maybe it's because it takes place far away, in Japan. Maybe it's because of all the stories you have heard from the festival. Maybe it's because of the unique tribal mystic that surrounds it, in combination with the nature of the location. Maybe it's because of the small group of artists, who all become like family for a few days. I do not know. But what I do know is that this dream has always been there and I am sure I share I it with a lot of musicians and DJs around the world. Anyway, 2015 I was lucky enough to be offered a slot, due in large part to my collaboration with Sebastian Mullaert, who already played there many times, both as Son Kite and as Minilogue.

So there we were behind the Labyrinth tipi, me and Sebastian, ready to go. Or, rather, not ready at all. We had prepared each to our selves but never found the time to meet up and rehearse together. I remember that Sebastian looked at me just before the set, and said something like: "I will not be sad or disappointed if things do not go well". I guess he was trying to calm me down since he knew I was kind of nervous. Anyway, off we went and thankfully, for some unknown reason, it was one of those gigs where everything just felt right.

So here is the recording. I still have not listened to it, and I do not think I will. I think I prefer to stay with the live memory of how it sounded. But I do hope that you will listen to the set, and that it will give you pleasure and meaning, just as my memory of it."

After more than three years of silence as a producer, Efdemin a.k.a Phillip Sollmann returns with a striking hybrid concept that merges the album format with the “continuous DJ mix” format, presenting completely new material in a seamless manner. This CD-mix, named Naïf, officially reinstates his label of the same name and is a sprawling tour of inner space featuring 19 distinct tracks from fellow producers (e.g. Margaret Dygas, Sebastian Mullaert, Steve Bicknell, Jeroen Search, Pom Pom, Marco Shuttle or Gunnar Haslam) along with an additional ten that feature Efdemin himself (either as soloist or collaborator). The release condenses his decade-long DJ-ing journey and evolution as a producer into a single potent elixir of contemporary techno.

Owing to his additional projects, such as collaborating with PAN artist Konrad Sprenger on a modular organ system to be installed in museums, or scoring for a Neue Musik ensemble, the Berlin-based Efdemin is known as hiker between the worlds . His regular stints at Berghain or Panoramabar, his partnership with established labels (e.g. Ostgut Ton, Dial, Sushitech) and the leadership of his own Naïf imprint all demonstrate that since more than a decade. 

Naïf consists of completely unreleased / never-before-heard material from both himself and valued collaborators, all of which will eventually manifest as EP releases: two will be available on Curle, with an additional five on his own Naïf label. All of the individual contributions are combined here in a painstaking assembly process that took an entire year to complete, and the result is that the album flows with an almost paradoxical effortlessness from one style to the next; a conscious choice on Efdemin’s part to give this release a longevity well beyond the typical lifespan of genre-specific DJ mixes. Besides the strong collection of tracks from well-known and undiscovered producers alike, it ́s Efdemin’s own contributions to the mix that stand out and reinforce his unique position.

This becomes evident once the album kicks off with spectral, distant bells and homemade modular synth sounds leading into more unreleased Efdemin pieces, „Watte“ and “Sirius,” whose deep dub resonance locks in the attention of those who were merely curious at the beginning of the trip. Later in the mix we find the weird electroacoustic textures of ‘Laveline’, a collaboration with the aforementioned Konrad Sprenger The standout composition on Naïf is Efdemin’s infectious microtonal techno “Move Your Head.” where Sollmann’s voice hovers over distorted 808 patterns and immersive justly tuned synth pads, pointing the way towards the formative, trailblazing influences – Silver Apples, This Heat and the drone aesthetic of Tony Conrad – which embodied the seeking spirit of techno before the genre as we now know it existed.

Throughout the remainder of the mix, a supporting cast of favorites turn in everything from blinding energy (Steve Bicknell’s “Running Man”), to unrestrained ecstasy courtesy of Inland / Ed Davenport, to the overdriven lockstep groove of Cassegrain’s Rhyw. The final bow comes in the form of the Efdemin track “Love,” which both pays homage to classic house tracks and refer to his early productions at the same time. 

Naïf is a release that will take several listens to fully explore, with each successive listen unearthing a new discovery: building a new future from the most resilient musical materials of the past. Thus showing Efdemin’s unique vision of the music called techno.

The Swedish artist has a distinct approach to life, as well as music, which is centred around tranquillity, stillness and the convergence of Zen meditation, nature and creativity. Known for his work as one half of Minilogue, Sebastian is also an accomplished solo artist with new material ready to roll. As an artist that is constantly evolving he has taken a bold new direction in his sonic exploration, immersing himself in the neo-classical scene and joining forces with one of the top 10 philharmonic orchestras in the world - Tonhalle Zürich. Working with great care and innovation he has created a truly immersive audio-visual performance experience, combining a mesmerising integration of electronic and classical instrumentation, with a visual art installation based on breath taking nature landscapes shot from a helicopter perspective. With such an innovative approach he aims to bridge the gap between classical and electronic music and introduce a whole new generation to the neo-classical concept. 

Sebastian's deep connection with music can be traced back to his formative years; from playing the organ and violin as a child, to performing in orchestras, string quartets and pop band, progressing into electronic music in his late teens. Discovering house and techno in the mid-nineties was the catalyst behind a revolution in his life, he set out on a new musical pathway, to promote the simplicity of being. Throughout the late nineties he experimented with electronic sounds, forming cult duo Minilogue with a friend and releasing with Crosstown Rebels, Traum Schallplatten, Wagon Repair and more, plus two albums via Cocoon – ‘Animals’ (2008) and ‘Blomma’ (2013). In 2014, the duo decided to take a break and invest their time in solo projects and Sebastian has since been hard at work cultivating a collection of new music already snapped up by hugely influential labels such as R&S sub-label Apollo, Drumcode, Hypercolour and Minus.

Sebastian Mullaert’s live performances are awe-inspiring, combining technical wizardry with energy, atmosphere and euphoria, you only have to watch his “Interpretations” performance for XLR8R or Boiler Room appearance for examples of his prowess. Recognition of his aptitude has led him to perform at institutions and festivals such as Panorama Bar - Berlin, Labyrinth Festival - Japan, Fabric - London, Concrete - Paris, The Block - Tel Aviv and Blackmarket - NYC. 

Sebastian’s collaborative work runs parallel to his solo endeavours and he has teamed up with several figures in the techno world to produce some unforgettable releases. Collaborators include Mathew Jonson, Eitan Reiter, Aril Brikha and Ulf Eriksson, and releases have come via underground platforms such as Hypnus, Mule Musiq and Kontra Musik. He also produces under the alias Wa Wu We, offering a serene, understated take on the techno aesthetic. Furthermore he is involved in the new Be Yokai project, a trio formed of Sebastian, Douglas Holmquist and Kristoffer Ström. The three men formed a natural alliance, finding their flow after several sessions together. Their first EP is signed to Hypercolour sub-label Space Hardware, with a live show and more music in the pipeline.

Sebastian Mullaert is already established as a potent force in the world of electronic music. Serious about reminding people to BE on the dance floor, or in the comfort of their own home, the music he makes is deep, progressive and utterly unique.
