Drunken Sway is inspired by a quote from the Eight Immortals’ Drunken Fist Manual—“Serving Wine with Drunken Swaying Gait.” A noteworthy description of the only female Immortal out of the Eight, He Xiangu, it illustrates both her vigor and suppleness, as well as her charming and playful qualities. Through the Suona, Erhu, Zhongruan and Guzheng, four representative and versatile traditional instruments, the work manifests the sentiments of intoxication and self-oblivion in various interconnected episodes. From the melancholic beginning to the mischievous middle section and the magnificent end, the piece is largely permeated by animated rhythms and dynamic momentum. The work is also rather virtuosic in terms of traditional technique; each of the four musicians are almost continuously engaged in performance, complementing each other within layered dialogues.

我的四重奏《醉荡步》取材于《醉八仙拳谱》里的一句，弹腰献酒醉荡 步。此句 是 对醉八仙中唯一女性何仙姑的描写，生动刻画着她的刚柔 相兼，以及她的妩媚和俏皮可爱。通过唢呐、二胡、中阮与古筝这4个 具有代表性、变化性的民族乐器，曲子把微醺、忘我的状态延伸到不同 的氛围，从最开始的惆怅，到中间的各种淘气，然后到最后的澎湃，依 旧保持着灵活的节奏和动感。这首曲也充满了传统技巧上的考验，四位 演奏家几乎连绵不断的玩奏，对话、一气呵成，相得益彰。

“Mujo” for tenor saxophone solo (2021) by Ooi Wei Chern

Flower petals fall, but the flower endures. The form perishes, but the being endures. ——Kaneko Daiei

Mujō is a Japanese word originated from Buddhist philosophy. By definition, mujō means impermanence. In Buddhism, all beings, without exception, are constantly in the state of mujō. They are not permanent, coming into being and dissolve. Driven by desire, the being was trapped in the cycle of birth, death and rebirth.

To me, mujō inspires the artistic idea of constant transition. In this piece, the musical material is constantly morphing, symbolizing impermanence. Various character was formed by the constant changes; some changes subtle, while some are abrupt and contrasting, reflecting the multiple states of life. The piece was to be played quite freely to emphasize the sense of unpredictability.
