The end was nigh; every avenue had been exhausted but all to no avail. This wasn't the outcome she'd hoped for, moving forward had been her priority from the outset. But her mind that couldn't shake the image. As much as she'd tried to block it out, it had become impossible. If her waking thoughts weren't consumed by it, her dreams were — that was something she couldn't control. 

One of our favourite dystopian soundtrackers Rat Life Records are returning with another EP 'to accompany the end of the world'. The label, run by producer and DJ Credit 00, have previously shared apocalyptic sounds from Fotze & Fatzke, Westlake & Hayter and Mr Incognito, and are now welcoming Rome-based producer Religious Order to the family. The six tracks across his 'Luci Nere' EP boast the gritty textures we've come to expect of a Rat Life release: a fusion of sludgy electro rhythms, eerie acid lines and distorted EBM vocal hits.

Exhausted Modern balances obscurity and clarity with his first full-length debut for Marguerite Records, wearing the familiar hallmarks of the producer’s sound with a determination that makes a home in headphones as easily as it seeds the imagination with images of dance floors swaying under influence of a soundsystem.

Six tracks collectively form a web of energy, flowing from swift movement under the beat of kinetic drums to a staggered inertia, tracing frantically static shapes that grip time still: as some elements of the music rear up forcefully and unobstructedly grim, others merge together in subtlety to form an electric shroud.

This occurs both within tracks and between them — as EP opener ‘Giving form to chaos’ pulses with mutant tropes of electro and full-weight EBM basslines, it also carries a haze of ambience hear far more prominently on ‘The self unselving’’s slow and methodical ride, which in turn is quite distant from purely ambient music without grit or rhythm.

The EP leers out of its own cold gloom, bearing Exhausted Modern’s customary challenge to society’s inequity just under the surface of the smoked ice in the stuttered samples and coded titles. Listeners to Exhausted Modern’s past work will find familiarity and refinement, and newcomers will hear perfectly distilled versions of the sounds displayed like talismans within his work.

Rich-poor divide widens. Unemployment soars. The East and West eyeball each other on the brink. 2022 isn’t too far off the 1980s. Contort Yourself knows this. Following the huge success of the prophetic 80s Underground Cassette Culture Vol 1, the Vol 2 double LP is set to hit shelves and screens with the same brand of distortion soaked didactics. Twenty one tracks from across the globe make up this second installment with nothing being constant. Instead, the overarching message is one of wanton abandonment; burnt-out artists peddling a punk profanity, marginalised musicians spitting on the establishment and industry. Rusted guitar strings, cobbled drum machines and fire in the belly; this is the recipe. A soundtrack of despondent despair, a lament of languid lechery, an anthem of what was then and still is now.
