snd are Mark Fell and Mat Steel, a pair of Sheffield DJs and musicians whose work has been described as glitch.[1] Naming their project after the extension often used for computer sound files, Fell and Steel are both expert programmers who disdain the usual electronics route of audio software or instruments. During 1998-99, they debuted with the "Tplay" single and Newtables EP on their own .snd label. In July 1999, Mille Plateaux released the debut album, Makesnd Cassette, with Stdiosnd Types following one year later.[2] Their most recent album, Atavism, was released in 2009 by Raster-Noton. Mark Fell and Mat Steel formed SND in 1998 and were quickly placed at the forefront of new digital minimalism. With a series of influential releases on their own label SND and on the now defunct Frankfurt Mille Plateaux, SND pioneered a sound that combined the linear minimalism of Ryoji Ikeda and Oval, with the rhythmic geometry of techno artists such as Thomas Brinkmann or Derrick May. 
SND promote an approach to the organization of sound, space and form that owes more to origami than any time based medium. SND explore the transformation of musical data: their music folds and unfolds, closes and opens, atomizes and regroups; a piece switches to a parallel version of itself, or gradually shifts into its opposite. Welcome to the second session of a new segment, called “ANNO STAMM’s Rhythm Research Center Sessions”. This is inspired by the repetitive grooveness of very long disco edits and the simple fact, that if you foist any group of sounds into a 16 note grid it will make your hips shake at least a little.

For the first three sessions i choose to use the first three ANSTAM ep’s Aeto, Brom and Cree as investigation objects. On the one hand it is better to use own material till we reach the point were the big apparatus is well adjusted and calibrated, on the other hand did ANSTAM always got long faces for not beeing repetitiv enough… Here you go, mass.

What the Rhythm Research Center does is pretty simple. It is a algorithm that takes a whole song and search for 16 short samples at a time. these 16 short samples are divided into different categories like kickdrum-like, hihat-like, snare-like, percussion-like, melodie-like etc… the RRC algorithm chooses the 16 samples wisely, concerning theses categories, and put them in a 4 to the floor pattern, that proved its impeccable function over time again and again on the dancefloors of the modern world. Basically it puts the kickdrum-like samples on 1-4-8-12, the hihat-like samples on the offbeat 2-6-10-14, the snare-like samples on 4-12 and the other little playful, surprising sounds in the gaps which are left and are not dividable to 2. here you have the basic principle of a satisfying techno beat – strong and clean rhythmic accents on the quarter notes, sharp ones on the offbeats between the quarter notes, and a little exotic rhythmic flare on the notes that would not fit in the first two categories… But you better not let the last weird notes dominate, at least not when you want a bunch of people to march in step.

The second thing i find also interesting in this whole experiment is that because the whole session (between 15 and 30 minutes) is only made out of little samples and extracts from one song, it feels a little bit like laying out the gene-material of the esthetic texture of that one song over the time…

And you are right, untill now, this has not really much to do with a session. Here is where i come in… I push a button and my little RRC algorithm gives me a beat (120bpm, of course). Then i have the option to mute any of these 16 notes samples and to push the “next” button to get the next, algorithm choosed, beat. This surprising element of infinite, unpredictable beats is what it makes so entertaining for my person – it gives me the chance to nod appreciative at the algorithm and think… yeah, that is cool one! the rest is rudimental playing with rhythmic accents and applied mathematics of prime numbers.

! Do not expect anything subtle or musically. this is pure, cold-blooded and stubborn machine funk !
