Dukes of Chutney is John Paul Jones and Dustin Lynn, California born brothers from other cosmic mothers who met surfing over a decade ago.

The flavor of the Dukes’ musical chutney is an abstract but balanced mixture of many disciplines. Under the moniker Tom Croose, Jones’ has established a beguiling production touch to various edits and remixes. Lynn is an accomplished filmmaker who has collaborated with artist Gabriel Orozco and directed campaigns for designers Alexander McQueen and Corto Moltedo.

Domino was conceived over two years during which Jones and Lynn were traveling separately and frequently across multiple countries and continents. From a peyote ceremony in Mexico (chants which can be heard echoing on “You, Me, The Chimp and Acapulco”) to hunting for surf along the Icelandic coast (the cold volcanic drums and distortion of “Jan’s Bellski”), Jones and Lynn hoarded field recordings, found instruments and life altering experiences to later process and navigate in a collaborative capacity.

The first Dukes recording session came together in Sausalito, CA, where Jones and Lynn began blending their globally foraged ingredients into what would become the EP’s closing track “Caledonia”. In the midst of trading demos stemmed from this session, they were introduced to Berlin-based vocalist and performance artist Elle P. Conjuring up a wild combo of Grace Jones, Meredith Monk and Trish Keenan, Elle channels these articulate spirits through her own multi-tracking vocal technique.

Although only virtually acquainted, the creative connection among Jones, Lynn and P was unmistakable. Elle soon contributed her triptych mantras and melodies to each of the dark, psycho-tropical jams Jones and Lynn laid out one after the next. Domino deviates slightly from the dancefloor conventions of the Beats In Space releases before it, but also transports the listener to the most serene and psychedelic catalog setting so far.

Each 12″ from Beats in Space Records features original artwork in considerate and serial form. Domino features artwork by Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin, the London via South Africa duo known for politically challenging and subverting the topical photo medium. The 12″ packaging constructed by Will Work For Good features a removable vinyl BIS logo cling.

Dukes of Chutney’s Domino will be released on November 5, 2013 on Beats In Space as a limited edition 12” EP and digitally.

'Oodnadatta Rain' sees Die Orangen (Kris Baha and Dreems) cloak a measured, half-time groove with shadowy new age mysticism typical of Malka Tuti. Fabrizio Mammarella's remix, on the other hand, plunges the label into uncharted territory. Offering more immediate thrills, the didgeridoo and brooding rainforest FX make way for drums reminiscent of early Belgian experimentations in electronic music. If Die Orangen's 10 minute opus resembles the bewitching soundtrack to a rain dance in the bush, the Mammarella remix transports you to mid-'80s Antwerp.

'Oodnadatta Rain' is out December 19th on Malka Tuti.

The iconic Penguin Cafe join the Erased Tapes family and open a brand new chapter to their unique world with new album The Imperfect Sea.

A penguin stands in the middle of a scorching desert, far away from its natural habitat. This mirrors composer Arthur Jeffes’ journey and exploration into a new musical territory. Penguin Cafe have evolved into something of their own at the hands of Arthur who started the band in 2009 with the continuation and homage to his father’s legacy, to the late Simon Jeffes’ Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Now, their upcoming album echoes reminiscent sounds that embrace the new.

The album title refers to a saying by his father that “we wade in a sea of imperfections…”, reflecting upon the idea that beauty can be found amongst the chaos. “If there is a narrative to the album it’s coming to the acceptance of the imperfections in all aspects of life; moreover, the recognition that these imperfections and tiny randomnesses are in fact what make up the best parts”, Arthur explains. This has also been highlighted by the striking cover artwork designed by FELD under the art direction of label founder Robert Raths, resembling a lone figure adapting to and accepting its surrounding environment.

Predominantly self-composed, the new album also features covers of electronic works by Simian Mobile Disco and Kraftwerk, along with a re-working of Simon's 'Now Nothing'. Arthur has developed from the traditional folk and jazz heritage Penguin Cafe Orchestra is known for into another realm of blissful ambience and dance music, recreated using strictly acoustic elements.

“For this album I wanted to effect a departure from where we’d been up to now. The idea was to create a musical world that would feel familiar to an audience more used to dance records but stay true to our own values. So we replaced electronic layers with real instruments: pads with real string sections, synths with heavily-effected pianos, and atmospheric analogue drones with real feedback loops ringing through a stone and a piano soundboard.”

On the day of release, the band will play a headline show at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge, commencing the beginning of this new adventure for Penguin Cafe.

The vocals are reduced to a mere atmospheric aspect, letting Robag's buzzing and clattering do the talking, as the underlying drawn-out melodic phrases breeze past, with plenty of auditory curveballs to make your ears smile.
