The Opiates is the latest project from the "queen of electronic soul" Billie Ray Martin, together with Norwegian musician Robert Solheim.  Already dubbed by the press as ‘The Carpenters of Electro’, their album ‘Hollywood Under The Knife’ explores paths pioneered by the Chicago house and Detroit techno heroes, (not least Electribe 101), with the aim of taking things forward a step or two. Although Kraftwerk and Yazoo have been mentioned as influences, The Opiates’ unique brand of electronic music is not readily categorised. Theirs is a pursuit without compromise; a rare match of songwriting and cutting-edge beats and bleeps.  


RAINY DAYS AND REMIXES : EP 
Prior to the release of the album comes the digital release of the "Rainy Days and Remixes“ EP on 19 September. The EP includes exclusive remixes of three of the album’s songs by Kim Ann Foxman (Hercules and Love Affair), the legendary Chris and Cosey (Throbbing Gristle) and XHK, plus the single "Rainy Days and Saturdays“. 


HOLLYWOOD UNDER THE KNIFE : CD & DIGITAL ALBUM
"Hollywood Under The Knife" is an album of real substance, both musically and visually. Artist Wolfgang Tillmans supplies nine previously unseen and unpublished images for the album cover and booklet. Each song on the album portrays another social 'misfit'. Characters who, trying to change their outer appearance or tweak their behaviour, believe they might just fit and ultimately face the consequences:

•	The woman who employs strange sexual fantasies involving the TV series CSI, to keep the boredom of life at bay. (Candy Coated Crime)

•	The transvestite (Candy Darling) who, although leading the wild life and preparing for a sex change, dreams of married life and a house in the suburbs. (Rainy Days and Saturdays)

•	The young wannabe actress in L.A. who reflects on her facial surgery that has left her scarred and punctured with holes inside and out. (Anatomy of a Plastic Girl)

•	The fifteen year old girl who wanted to be herself, but gets voted off the reality TV show 'Make Me A Supermodel' and who is so destroyed that she believes her life is over at the age of fifteen, because they told her it was. (Reality TV)

•	The aging formerly rich daughter of a formerly famous actress who reminisces about her mother feeding her tranquilizers as a kid to keep her out of the way and who later goes through a path of plastic surgery, health foods, porn movie making...all to find out who she is. (Oprah's Book of the Month Club)

•	The same woman who suffers from insomnia and tells the story how the demons of her soul and the demons of the night keep her awake. (Silent Comes the Nighttime)

•	The man who dresses up in women's clothes (Roman Polanski in 'The Tenant') trying to fight the people he believes want to kill him by convincing him that he is Simone Choule, a woman who committed suicide in the apartment that he now rents. (I'm not Simone Choule)

An EP entitled ‘Anatomy of a Plastic Girl’ was released in March 2008, accompanied by a much celebrated gig at London’s Rough Trade store, resulting in rave press reviews for both the gig and the EP. In Germany, the song ‘Anatomy of a Plastic Girl’ made it into the Top 20 listeners choice charts when added to the playlist at Radio One.
Plans are afoot to stage a performance/play entitled ‘Anatomy of a Plastic Girl’, a multimedia piece using Wolfgang’s images as well as multimedia elements, in the near future.

Turner Prize winner Wolfgang Tillmans (famed for his sleeve design & videos for Pet Shop Boys, REM, Goldfrapp ...) is a long-time fan of Billie’s work. He has photographed her twice and chose her as ‘most influential woman’ as part of i-D Magazine’s 25th birthday issue and celebrations. For ‘Hollywood Under The Knife’, Wolfgang opened his entire archive and gave The Opiates unprecedented access to choose their favourite images.

Everything goes in cycles, both at a macro and micro level.

Perhaps subconsciously in response to the sensitivity of December's mix, which was in response to the thickness of November, which was in part was a response to October's delicacy, which I think may have been a turn from the intensity of my experience at Burning Man, I open February with an obvious driving (dare I say less sophisticated?) edge before cycling and sliding into a comfortable melodic descent.

Producing electronic music since 1997, Switzerland's Daniel Kneubühler aka Da Funk makes his first return to the label since "Anjunadeep 03"'s "Weekend Rubdown" with this double hit of deep melodic house goodness. 

A dreamy laid-back cruise through washing pads, warm melodies and blissful bleeps, "Smug" is a cult ID from James Grant's Anjunadeep edition back in February. An instant gem, its release puts an end to months of forum speculation with they track also finding support on Above & Beyond's Group Therapy.

A slightly more energised affair, "Don't Let Go" is equally memorable with rich interlocking melodies, a hooky vocal and a beautiful, subtle piano motif that appears throughout.

When A Fire Starts To Burn

Everybody loves blondes right? Well In the last few years we’ve become even more of a fan of the fair, well ish as Canadian born London based duo Blond:ish have captured our attention with their unique production recipe which focuses on the art of creating music that is organic and multi-dimensional. Provocative basslines contrast with smooth textures and haunting vocals to defy categorization as anything other than cool. 

Thus it is with great excitement we welcome the girls in for this weeks podcast after a huge 2012 wherein they stormed the scene with a series of big releases including their psychedelic influenced ‘Lovers In Limbo’ EP  on Kompakt  which showcased Blond:ish’s curiosity of the late 60’s musical movement, as well dropping stellar efforts for Noir Music, NM2 and Get Physical. 

So with a big year behind them and even bigger 2013 planned with an extensive set of tour dates including Flying Circus in Ibiza at the end of the month and the Chicago leg of the Electric Daisy Carnival, things certainly seem to be looking up for the duo.  Quirky and innovative, very much like their native city of Montreal and the organized chaos that have accompanied their sets there since they burst onto the scene with their acclaimed residency at the city’s Cherry Club, we think the mix they’ve delivered from a small village in deepest, darkest Mexico is the perfect thing to get you in the mood for the summer ahead. It’s Friday and after a long week we can’t wait to go out and enjoy the weekend. So with that in mind we’ve got the perfect thing to get you in the mood to enjoy yourself with an exclusive mix from Berlin based DJ and producer Quell. For the uninitiated Quell has been making serious waves in the underground scene in his adopted home of the German capital and beyond, taking up any challenge presented to him  with an impressive array of releases on premium labels like Ibadan Records, Tsuba, These Days, 4Lux and 8Bit among others.

2013 sees Quell about to leave his mark on a lrager scale as he prepares to release his debut LP on esteemed imprint legendary Ibadan Records, entitled 'Them Crowd Kids' in addition to 12" singles on Ralph Lawson's 2020Vision Recordings and the parisian Skylax Records.

With constant efforts to improve his sound and further experiment what sets artists like Quell apart is their unbridled passion for electronic music and this passion cannot be replicated or falsified as  Quell explains "It is my firm belief that a DJ should be able to entertain as much as educate a crowd and the two don't have to be mutually exclusive values. DJing is one of the most misunderstood jobs around and It's vital to me, for the people who come see you to get more than their money's worth and experience an engaging performance" 

Travelling all over the world, but also playing some hand-picked, special interest events of Berlin, he presents shows that include 3-4 hour high energy house/techno of all times to more expansive long-hour shows weaving through post punk, indie and disco back to house and techno.
