For Truancy Volume 153 we're pleased to present 8ULENTINA, curator of the recently featured Tobago Tracks compilation DISMISS U. 8ULENTINA is a producer, DJ and installation artist based in Oakland, California. Together with foozool they run Club Chai, a club night that inverts power structures through its line ups and offers the kind of space that, as 8ULENTINA told The Astral Plane, allows them to, “Be trans, Middle Eastern, queer and everything else at once instead of one tokenized element of [them]self”.

In a year that has seen their profile begin to rise they've made their Rinse FM debut and released mixes for the likes of The Astral Plane, Club Ettiquette, and Tobago Tracks. We've loved them all so it was a no brainer to get them in the mix for a Truancy Volume. On their mix 8ULENTINA taps into many modes: sultry RnB from Kid Ink and Mila J, club bangers from collectives like NAAFI and Night Slugs, Turkish EDM from Kantik and more abstract offerings from Chino Amobi and 8ULENTINA themself. These disparate threads are lovingly blended into a coherent whole, rattling through everything in an exhilarating 30 minutes.

In anticipation of his Legendary EP, out February 10th on stalwart Philadelphia label Seclusiasis, RBMA alumni HomeSick debuts the imposing lead track "Our Storm." 

An alumni of the 2015 Red Bull Music Academy in Paris, the Calgary-based producer otherwise known as Shaun McHale keeps busy running his Percolate party as well as the Footwork Jungle mix series, which celebrated its 40th edition in late 2016. "Our Storm" emphasizes a vocal sample taken from David Lynch's Dune, and the oppressive weather quickly arrives in the form of HomeSick's speaker-shaking basslines and belching synthesizers. The energy expands with the addition of wet snaps and a stuttering footwork kick, creating ample space for the disorienting detail that makes the synth's eventual return that much more overpowering.

Taking nods from footwork, grime, jungle and more styles - HomeSick has an inventive sound that brings a fun and bouncy vibe while utilizing thoughtful and edgy sound design and overall dopeness.

Calgary's HomeSick has carved out a lane for himself in the world of high-BPM club music — not just by running the Footwork Jungle online community and the Percolate party series, but also through his own, often times amorphous productions and world-class DJ sets. He was selected to be a participant at the 2015 Red Bull Music Academy hosted in Paris, where he was mentored by some of the world’s most prestigious artists and producers. Listed by Vice’s THUMP as one of the “10 Canadian Electronic Artists to watch in 2016”, his performances in Spain, France, UK and Germany solidify his status as Western Canada's bass music ambassador.
