John Dieterich & Jeremy Barnes began ’The Coral Casino’ as an attempt to understand one another. They met one day and the next they were in a blank room with unfamiliar instruments in their hands and zero expectations, each agreeing to do his utmost to ignore the other. Yes, their first forays into musical collaboration began with the stipulation that each had to improvise in a rhythmic manner while not listening to what the other was doing. This idiosyncratic process proved to be the unlikely genesis of songs like “Special Questions,” “Sandwild,” and “The Frost Pocket.” Their shared love of melody and pop provided the anchor for wild performances and deep, rich textures, laying the groundwork for many more moods: the euphoric “Out & About;” the stirring tribute to the satellite Philae (“Philae lands on comet 67p_churyumov-gerasimenko”), the first satellite to land on a comet, and so on.

Expansive, unafraid of complexity yet wide-eyed with elation, their sound embodies risk that genuinely rewards. While flirtations with danger and darkness occasionally appear, in the end everything becomes a laughing pile on the floor. An optimistic homage to a possible future, ‘The Coral Casino’ is both childish and sophisticated, seemingly tossed off yet at the same time exhibiting a depth that reveals itself on each subsequent listen; an exploration of friendship and the pure joy of ecstatic communication.

Take a trip to ‘The Coral Casino’: the perfect destination, where everything is topsy-turvy, no one is in control and yet all are mysteriously spirited to their beds before dawn.

Dieterich & Barnes "Out And About"

Jon Phonics returns to Boiler Room Debuts, bringing his latest release on First Word Records in the form of his Letters To Home LP. Well and truly part of the Boiler Room family, the Glasgow-based producer presents a stellar example of his versatility as a music-maker. Deep-textured field recordings, sample chops and rolling bass lines pave the way for a multitude of styles and tempos, from "sleazy synth-pop" to hard hitting "slo-mo trap" and gritty grime.

The fifth track on the album "Nagasaki VIP", is one of many that captures where Phonics' head has been in recent times, while maintaining elements of his signature production style he has become so well-known for. The short-yet-uncompromising track doesn't pull any punches, as an intermittent bamboo flute sample, snappy snares and a furry bass line all combine to create an impelling trap beat which stands as testament to his seemingly effortless MPC work.

Letters To Home will be available on vinyl or to download from the 10th June.

Marcel Dettmann has revealed the second exclusive track from his forthcoming DJ-Kicks compilation - a collaboration with revered producer Levon Vincent, entitled ‘Can You See’. 

The pair have previously collaborated, releasing ‘Vengeance’ on Levon’s own Novel Sound label towards the end of 2015 to critical acclaim. Speaking about their relationship, Marcel explains: “Five years ago we sat in the studio and were just jamming, and started to work on some tracks… we met in Munich last year before playing together and suddenly he handed me over a test pressing of one of these tracks - I was surprised because he hadn’t said a single word about it to me before then. ‘Can You See’ was still in the drawer, so we started working on that track again, sending sound back and forth, and the result is what you can listen to now.”

This one has been a long time coming.  In 2014, debut album in the can, Silver Servants, a loose collective of Second Language artists, commenced work on a Winter-themed recording.  For one reason or another, what was meant to be one, gapless sonic tapestry, never made it to full fruition but you can hear the fruits it did produce, here on ‘Drifts & Flurries.’  With the creative success of the ‘Avenue With Trees’ album, we decided to take those Silver Servants tracks as a starting point for a new compilation, inviting old ghosts and new friends to contribute.

Mark Brend aka Ghostwriter, was one of the very first artists to release something on Second Language – ‘The Continuing Adventures Of The Strange Sound Association album,’ came out in 2010, when we were less than a year old.  His specially-commissioned work here forms pillars throughout this record, accompanied by Katie English (Isnaj Dui, Littlebow, Silver Servants).  The Declining Winter featured on our first ‘Music & Migration’ compilation from the same year.  Here, in true ‘Servants style, they collaborate with Clay Pipe fellow, David Rothon and Glen Johnson, a Servant, himself.

ISAN first featured on a Second Language compilation in 2011, if only for a minute (‘Minute Papillon’).  You can also find them on our second ‘Music & Migration’ compilation and the duo’s Robin Saville released his solo album, ‘Public Flowers,’ on the label in 2013.

Oliver Cherer (in his Dollboy guise) was also an early 2L attendee.  He’s omnipresent here, voicing Ghostwriter tracks, moonlighting as a Silver Servant and offering an icy take on Nico’s ‘Frozen Warnings.’  Newer to our fold are the London-based Japanese composer, Yumi Mashiki and Paul Tornbohm’s Alter Later project, voiced here (on a splendid Yazoo cover) by Amanda Butterworth of Mücha.  The French field recordist, Marc Namblard, exposes the secret sounds of frozen lakes, Scot electronicists P60 team up with Finnish guitarist, J. Luneburg for a secular dance and Sea Glass, formed from the ribs of The Leaf Library and Firestations, take on Movietone’s ‘Blank Like Snow.’ David Rothon offers a beautiful paean to the Welsh hill and battleground, Bryn Glas.  

‘Drifts & Flurries’ includes a bonus disc, ‘The Frosted Pane,’ by Johnson and the Bulgarian violist, Raisa Zapryanova.
