What does great techno sound like in 2024? Enter LYDO. This week's RA Podcast captures @lydole in full flow, combining the old-school vernacular of European and North American techno—reduced rhythms, hi-hats and punchy 909s—with tracks from the new guard (Sev Dah, GiGi FM, D.Dan) sprinkled throughout.

After moving to New York in 2015, the Vietnamese-American sound artist and X-XTRA.SERVICES founder became one of BASEMENT's first residents; the scene built around the revered Queens club has helped nurture their adventurous sound. Lately they've been making waves beyond North America, playing with the MARICAS crew in Barcelona and locking down slots at De School, Bassiani and Draaimolen.

RA.947 is the sound of artful hypnosis: it's techno with elegance, depth and just the right amount of thump. Rig this up on a proper system, turn off the lights and any worries—about the genre's direction of travel, or otherwise—might melt away.

originally premiered the first two hours of this mix on August 4, 2021 on @coopersaver's Far Away radio show on Dublab. Re-uploaded to my profile after the Far Away project went dormant.

What does it mean to relive uncut human experience? Not just a memory, not just a dream, but something more. The past inside the present.

In his seminal “In/Flux”, the EP from which Mixmag dubbed the term “trip-hop”, DJ Shadow opens with a narcotic vocal sample, “It's a song about life, death, love, hate, wealth, poverty, racism...Just a few things been running through my head...” That quote, along with the souls of a whole host of talented musicians and DJs, both living and dead, inform the work you’re about to hear.

Later, in Endtroducing, Shadow uses his “Transmission” interludes as a sort of frame story, suggesting that his album is being beamed to the subconscious of his listener from the future. This mix operates in a similar way, and has its own interludes, though from the past, a wiretrip, a blackjack clip à la Strange Days. Because this is a story about Minneapolis, about the Twin Cities community of activists and ravers, about me, living breathing sleeping shitting pissing doping our way from January 2020 to the Derek Chauvin trial. It is a chronological mix, though there are tributes sprinkled in to the dearly departed. There is George Floyd, there is Philando Castile, there is MF DOOM Andrew Weatherall Phil Asher and DMX, there is dodging rubber bullets and tear gas and flashbangs and kettles and watching a precinct burn. There is mutual aid. There is the despair and desperation of it all, as incremental reform takes over anarchic energy. There is a retreat to chemicals and its fallout. There is the strange, ambiguous sense of relief at some measure of justice, and there is anger at seeing new administrations retreat to the clinical and brutal doublespeak of late capitalism. It’s all there, if you hear it with the right set of ears.

In time for 9/9, here's… 999999999.

The Italian duo's reputation as a rave demolition crew has made them one of the most in-demand acts on the global circuit. Too nosebleed for 'business', and too close to Defqon.1-level hardstyle to be hard techno in the classic sense, 999999999's headline sets practically require a new category to convey the sense of scale: let's call it megatechno. 

Following a string of unsubtle yet undeniably impactful hit records in the late 2010s, Carlo B. & Giovanni C. became fast favourites of a generation who prefer their 303 cranked to 11. Their rampant velocity arrived at the right moment, proving parallel compatibility with acid lifers and younger audiences making the leap from EDM to hard dance. Flash forward to 2024 and they're flanked by flamethrowers while mashing down colossal crowds at festivals like Awakenings. 

Here, they purposefully strip it back and emphasise the core elements of the 9x9 formula—high drama, jackhammering kicks and the kind of tweaked-out acid air sirens that would make the likes of Hardfloor and Miss Djax scrunch their noses in approval. In other words, non-stop wrecking balls trained squarely at the foundations of a hangar near you.

1ol1v1a is a Brooklyn-based DJ and producer whose sound draws from modern hardgroove, '90s techno/trance, and ambient. As a co-founder of the queer party series CTRL_F, she brings deep, percussive, and emotionally charged sets to NYC's nightlife. Her mixes reflect a love for hypnotic rhythm and textured atmospheres, creating immersive journeys that move the dancefloor.

"This mix was actually done about a week after my Vocal Feminization Surgery, and since I couldn’t speak(for 3 weeks), it felt entirely restorative to express myself via a different way, in this case, DJing. As is the case with all of my sets, this one was largely improv/impromptu; I tend to come into the studio or set with a first ambient song chosen and possibly a second(dance song) track to follow. I like to treat my sets like jazz. Miles Davis once said, 'It's not the note you play that's the wrong note – it's the note you play afterwards that makes it right or wrong', which is exactly how I see djing. I think you can take as many left turns as you want, as long as they are followed by things that contextualize them. I think this set really gets at how I was feeling at the time, a blend between a consistent anger/passion that tracks my trans experience as well as the euphoria associated with it."
