There’s no gimmick with Daniel Avery, no hook. He is, as his Discogs page puts it, a “DJ and producer from England.”

And really, that should be the only hook you need. Since focusing on making music under his real name in the early ’10s (though he was DJing and producing for several years before then), the one-time studio assistant of Andrew Weatherall has been steadily developing from record to record, combining house and techno structures with dynamics that betray his love of oddball guitar music and ’90s alt-rock. Like Weatherall, and like Downwards’ Regis, Avery recognises the limitless potential to hypnotise by getting as weird as possible over a 4×4 pulse, and on his debut album Drone Logic (the clue’s in the name), he uses 4×4 as a canvas to paint Bosch-esque visions of disembodied voices, tripped-out rabbit-holes and more.

Of course, it also bangs when it has to –  Avery’s no floor-clearer. In fact, he’s become one of the UK’s most celebrated DJs of recent years, contributing to the BBC Essential Mix series and releasing a mix CD for Fabric. Avery’s FACT mix – no tracklist, spotters – comes on the eve of a new residency for Fabric, Divided Love. The first Divided Love takes place on August 15, and features sets from hallowed electro unit Dopplereffekt, Helena Hauff and Factory Floor, Volte-Face and Avery himself.

“The club has been with me from the beginning so starting my own night there feels genuinely exciting”, explains Avery. “Divided Love will be about presenting acts who are doing something special… sonic souls, faith affirmers, music for the mind.”

You are in a cave in an Indonesian ashram. Surrounded by statues of Ganesh, the fragrant smells of incense and flowers put your senses at ease as you sublimate. The sound of trickling fountains reverberates throughout your mind, breaking your defenses down into a state of pure, blissful relaxation. This is the ideal environment to introduce the freshly minted "Leaving Records for the New Age" series. Fittingly, these sounds come straight from label founder and forward-thinking steward of modern New Age music, Matthewdavid. He is your pilot for the duration of his Ashram, transporting you from one serene scene to the next on his Mindflight Express. In this collection of three long-form compositions, heavy water sounds and flute mix with field recordings from Bali, sweeping synthesizers, and the angelic vocals of Nora Keyes (“Dancing Ganesh”). Though Ashram documents a special time and place in the producer's life, it may only whet listeners' appetites for its double-LP followup, the contemporary New Age masterwork Trust the Guide and Glide.

I Don't Need It (Snippet)

Written in the beautiful, hazy and humid summer of 2015, "The Function" is an homage to all that is Montreal in it's most vibrant time of year. This tape is a tribute to the late nights out, new friends by morning and the vernacular that comes along with the cultural melting pot of Montreal's nightlife. Comfort Zone (@comfortzonemontreal) brings together classic filter house sounds and modern polish that is a breath of fresh air in today's ever dominant lo-fi house aesthetic.

And the loop goes on and on and on. Four times, until the end. The wheel would continue to spin, the planet would continue to turn and the sun would set upon this day once more. This relaxation would never be found once more, they were lost, deep within the comfort zone. 

Second Hand Fun is a new label which appear to have hit the ground running. Split between Montreal and Berlin their first release comes from Comfort Zone with an EP named 'The Function'.

For our first mix, we wanted to showcase all the great producers we've crossed paths with living in Toronto and Montreal. With all the spotlight on the west coast of Canada, it seemed like a good opportunity to showcase what the east coast has up its sleeve. All the producers & DJs highlighted in this mix have varying ranges of notoriety in the dance world, but they all maintain a crucial connection to their local scene.
