OFF mainstay Oliver Deutschmann returns with a really special track that’s as leftfield as functional, and could be well imagined at one of his Berghain sets - let’s hope those will soon return!

The track kicks off with the eponymous ‚Energy‘ vocal sample, and syncopated percussions, builds with energetic hats, to introduce a timeless chord theme. Add to that a heavily reverbed kick and ever-evolving tension curve thanks to a great arrangement, and out comes a perfect track.

1605 is the Slovenia-based label from one of techno’s grandest ambassadors. UMEK is a name known back to his first appearance in 1996 and has been a major player in the growth of the genre since then.

The latest release Frequency Differ is a dual A-side that includes his modern interpretation on the techno sound as well as a more electro-influenced approach with his Zeta Reticula alias.

For this DT:Premiere we selected the track “Binary Pair” with its imposing power. A two-step beat is surrounded by dramatic tension from haunting synth stabs, electro waves and epic, cinematic chords creating an other worldly vision.

Berlin based producer @charlyschaller presents her first solo release with Second State, ‘Togians EP’. Having exploded onto today’s techno circuit with releases across esteemed labels, the launch of her ‘Realness’ event series and regular appearances at the likes of About Blank and Griessmühle, the fast-ascending producer conjures up a momentous 4 tracker for the revered Berlin label. 

Title track ‘Togians’ is a demonic cut, triggering disquiet through layers of harsh growls and foreboding keys. Schaller lets light into the darkness as the story unravels, with a phantasmic twinkling break, before monstrous atmospherics envelop you once again. Next is ‘Can’t Move’, in which Susan Riot’s voice croons hypnotically, uniting sinister drones and spiralling alarms to stir up a threatening and transfixing techno-anthem.

In ‘Television Static’ a male vocal reverberates mournfully, while a fierce energy builds subtly underneath. With stirring chord progressions leading us to an ecstatic break – the yearning voice calling out the whole while – Schaller creates a deeply emotive track that tugs on the heartstrings. The EP closes with ‘Fly Fly’: an uplifting broken beat sweeps you up into the confident care of Dani Delion, whose vocals paint thrilling pictures, encouraging you to join her in revelry and fly.

Long-standing techno force @garybeck will return to Berlin’s Second State with a grooving and cerebral 4 track EP. A pillar of Scotland’s techno scene, Gary has appeared regularly at some of the globe’s most respected venues and festivals including Womb Tokyo, fabric, Output NYC and Awakenings, to name a few. 

Title track ‘Supervan’ opens with bouncing bass and rattling percussion. A chopped-up vocal is introduced and commands the track forward as it ascends, with the kick battling to harden the track over the grooving melody and anthemic keys. Next up is the spirited cut ‘Psycho Babble’. A resounding sample attempts to cry out over the jacking bass and kick combo, calling out in ecstasy at intervals of the track. A minimal hi-hat jumps throughout but retracts as the track increases tempo and gallops towards the end, where Beck incorporates breakbeat elements for the final leg. 

‘Sparks’ follows with rhythmic shakers and hi-hats juxtaposing each other under the monologue of two young punters. The conversation adds a narrative to the track as it intensifies along with a gritty buzzing element. The voices become distorted as the track builds to crescendo, with the sample and music working together in unison to unravel the story of the character’s night. The finale ‘Pink Castles’ is a pacy and hypnotic trip, conjuring up the energy of both a peak-time workout and high-tempo closer. Haunting vocals and icy synths swirl around the driving elements and atmospherics, engulfing the listener into the darkness of this finishing track.
