DJ/Producer, label boss & creative director Cora Novoa will debut on Berlin’s Second State with ‘Rituals’ EP. The release contains 3 dynamic original tracks from the Spanish creative, with an additional rework from regular Berghain DJ Nur Jaber.   

Opening with the title track ‘Rituals’, Cora sets the pace of the EP with a pulsating kick and bass combo, uniform claps and a misting synth to give a dark atmosphere. A recurrent and frenzied vocal is introduced, throwing off all steadiness and sending the percussion into a frenzy. Deranged industrial elements and off-kilter sonics whine and ring out as the track develops, adding to the darkness Novoa has initially created. Subsequent track ‘Old Anthems’ is forefronted by a bubbling electro riff and a repetitive, chopped up sample ringing out in tandem with percussive stabs. Glitchy drums and distortions are dotted throughout, adding an eccentricity to this trance-inducing track. 

  ‘I’m Gonna Kill You, King Romano’ is the shortest cut on the EP, but packs just as much impact. The sound production mimics that of polyphonic choir music, with Cora using multiple samples and effects to achieve this. The voices are layered over gentle pads and modest twinkling keys to create an ethereal moment in this raucous EP. Nur Jaber’s rework brings with it a sharp, leaner kick and switch-up with the samples - now using a low-pitched and muffled male voice. Trance-like synths are teased out but restrained. Nur’s interpretation adds a lightness to the original, playing with arrangements and creating a new melody of airy wavering keys and a distorted, washed-out rave sound.

A mainstay of the Second State label, Michael Klein’s back catalog has now expanded to include 11releases with the Berlin imprint. ‘Golden Hour’ is a classic high-energy and versatile contribution from Klein, with 5 mesmerizing techno tracks.

Opener and title track ‘Golden Hour’ kicks off with strong synergy between the kick, bass, and percussion. Moving & rising at controlled pace, Klein brings in off-kilter keys and a smooth arpeggio. Next up is ‘VoiceInterrupt’ which uses twisted melodies and pitch distortions to create a tense but energetic energy. Minimal shakers and a solitary hi-hat add texture to the track whilst keeping the arrangements tight and bouncy. ‘InMy Own Eyes’ starts off minimal and subdued, with a rotary synth that eventually breaks through and takes command. Subtle industrial elements are used but hidden under shakers, coming to the forefront during a brief interlude of the main synth-line.

Following is ‘Howlip’ with a uniform kick, hi-hat, and a jagged synth combo that dance menacingly throughout. A sample of the cut’s name chimes in at varied volumes, at times battling against the main groove and recurring electro-twinged synth. A driving and peak-time dance-floor weapon. The finale of the EP ‘One Eyed Master’ is dominated by piping, high-frequency keys that bubble under the main kick, and sharp single hi-hat. Varying in intensity as the track drives on, the keys create a dystopian yet uneasy atmosphere. Klein again plays with the balance of percussion and pitch to manipulate the mood created in the track, an obvious theme and technique applied throughout the EP.

HDDNSYMBLS is a new peak time techno record label from Orly Gal who has previously worked with labels such as Kaiserdisco's KD RAW.

Based in the American city of Los Angeles, Orly Gal has built up a reputation for having a dark and driving style of hypnotic techno that has got industrial undertones.

Already an established DJ in her local club scene, she has been building a global fanbase with the help of her releases on record labels such as Ushuaia Music and BLOK.

The release features an explosive original track alongside a remix by veteran artist Insider, who has been releasing music since the '90s on labels ranging from Bonzai Classics to the iconic Belgian imprint Music Man Records.

Opening the release is the original mix of "Just Ise" which blends fast-flowing percussion with the frantic intensity of the mesmerising lead synth. Augmented with industrial bursts, it has got a dark and sinister atmosphere while also packing one hell of a punch.

For the first CLR release of 2023, Chris Liebing drops a heavy-hitting EP for his own imprint, the two-track ‘Love Those Who Fight With Passion And Faith EP’. Leading the release, ‘For Those Who Fight’ combines sub-rattling kicks and siren-esque bleeps with rousing vocal samples and shimmering percussion for a warehouse-filling club cut. ‘With Passion And Faith’ keeps the energy levels high with dubbed-out FX, twisted atmospherics and sizzling drum machines.

While 2022 was dominated by Liebing’s ‘Another Day’ LP and remix version, ‘Another Night’, for Daniel Miller’s Mute, 2023 will see Liebing in full-on singles mode with some notable collaborations to come.

Liebing’s iconic CLR imprint started in 1999 and returned in 2021 after a five-year hiatus. Now titled Create Learn Repeat, CLR reemerged in the techno underground with releases from Liebing himself, followed by newcomer Frankie Bromley, upstarts Hertz Collision & Gene Richards Jr, DEAS, Truncate, Drumcell and techno legend Luke Slater.
