Simple to Complex / Differentiation to unity : Opposing forces supporting each other with the potential to interact and co-evolve at different levels of reality.

The music I'm creating, both techno and ambient, is the result of many inner battles, discoveries, joys and sorrows, it's the best way we have as artists to get our emotions out right? After all that's the essence of any form of Art: Creating to give energy back to the world, to share, to be excited or emotional, together.

A fantastic example of such human-machine synergy is the 4-tracker “Definition Loss”, the debut on Consumed Music by Barcelona based artist Linear Phase. Swedish duo Manic Brothers deliver a neat remix in their signature unique style.

Andrea Roma and Mark Denken have delivered a curveball of a track! The samples used in the original are bound to make this one of the most memorable tracks of the season. Overall summer craziness with unorthodox sampling is the name of the game here, and we guarantee that the vocal will be embedded on your brain.

Kiko flips the switch and takes a more serious route, with powerful stabs and his trademarked 5-star production, making this a perfect alternative to the lightness of the original.

The Berlin by way of Brighton producer @listentobec has been a member of the Second State family since her first release with the label in 2016. Since then, BEC has dropped 4 EP’s with the Berlin imprint, and regularly appears at the likes of Awakenings, Amnesia, Warehouse Project, Fabrik, Watergate & Burning Man to name a few.

Title track ‘Solitude’ opens with a sharp, rounded kick and crafty drumwork. Metallic swipes and rave stabs are injected to build tension, along with a choppy vocal and bubbling element. Punchy arrangements and rave stabs bring this track to rave territory at moments, before hauling back into the deepness of the cut. Next up is ‘Process Don’t Resist’, easing us in with a crackling bass and a solitary hi-hat, soon joined by buoyant claps and a muffled kick that submerges listeners into a different dimension. Darker, swiping elements are introduced with metallic textures, with the claps becoming more erratic as the track unfolds. An indiscernible vocal gives way to a jarring breakdown halfway through, sending shockwaves through the listener before submerging back into the hysteria. 

‘Coming’ follows and initially appears as a break from the heaviness of the previous productions, before transforming into a high-octane stomper. A booming kick, bleeps and spiking vocal build the intensity as the track drives forward and hoover noise wavers menacingly. The vocal and kick bounce in unison towards the close, with a final cry towards the end. The finale is dark, mysterious and entrancing with ‘Fear Parade’. An authoritative female voice utters ‘not afraid’ under a myriad of shakers, howls and vicious synth swipes. The sample gradually takes over with the track building to crescendo, allowing shakers to come to the forefront along with eerie howls and a new, more robotic vocal.

From the UK, a techno legend Hans Bouffmyhre is on remix duties. Sleaze Records label owner produced a heavier variation with a warm industrial feel. Distorted kick, stomping drums and escalating synths, layered with distorted vocals put a listener onto a hypnotic journey.

A mainstay of the Second State label, Michael Klein’s back catalog has now expanded to include 11releases with the Berlin imprint. ‘Golden Hour’ is a classic high-energy and versatile contribution from Klein, with 5 mesmerizing techno tracks.

Opener and title track ‘Golden Hour’ kicks off with strong synergy between the kick, bass, and percussion. Moving & rising at controlled pace, Klein brings in off-kilter keys and a smooth arpeggio. Next up is ‘VoiceInterrupt’ which uses twisted melodies and pitch distortions to create a tense but energetic energy. Minimal shakers and a solitary hi-hat add texture to the track whilst keeping the arrangements tight and bouncy. ‘InMy Own Eyes’ starts off minimal and subdued, with a rotary synth that eventually breaks through and takes command. Subtle industrial elements are used but hidden under shakers, coming to the forefront during a brief interlude of the main synth-line.

Following is ‘Howlip’ with a uniform kick, hi-hat, and a jagged synth combo that dance menacingly throughout. A sample of the cut’s name chimes in at varied volumes, at times battling against the main groove and recurring electro-twinged synth. A driving and peak-time dance-floor weapon. The finale of the EP ‘One Eyed Master’ is dominated by piping, high-frequency keys that bubble under the main kick, and sharp single hi-hat. Varying in intensity as the track drives on, the keys create a dystopian yet uneasy atmosphere. Klein again plays with the balance of percussion and pitch to manipulate the mood created in the track, an obvious theme and technique applied throughout the EP.
