Sol Power Sound is proud to present its first release of 2016, a 3-song EP by recent Finnish expatriate, Tom of Brooklyn. After a massive release on Razor-n-Tape in 2015 (and slight change of moniker), the ever-mysterious Tom delivers a 3-song EP of breezy disco grooves inspired by his recent cruise of the islands.

On Theme Song from Deep Cock, Tom double-teamed with Deep Sang (of the Sol Power All-Stars). The tag-team duo came up with a tight and groovy title sequence for a film that will likely never see the light of day.

Look at Me is a moody slice of disco goodness that Tom put together for his now-legendary sunrise sets on the ship.

Make Me Wonder is a warm-weather jam that fills the B-side of the record. A seemingly endless funky groove, it was Tom’s secret weapon at his all-day beach parties in port. He tells us he can’t wait to play it at outdoor jams in his new home of Brooklyn, NY (and at Fire Island soirees this summer)!

few days ago, something special happened at the end of a show in France where I was playing b2b with mamene S3A.
the sound engineer, waited for the place to be empty and just played this beautiful track for the staff and the artists packing their stuff and it had a really strong effect on me. something beautiful, out of time, lost in a little snowy village, this song I know since I was a kid sounded different and affected me.
the funniest part of the story is that S3A did a France Gall edit few weeks ago to pay his tribute to this wonderful and talented artist, thanks to him for opening the road.
here it is, only three days after the show cause it feels linked to that moment for ever to me.

Guadeloupe, 1986. The football World Cup has all the islanders' eyes riveted to their TV sets. At every half time breaks, local TV channel RFO broadcasts a music video on repeat: ‘’Tou’t Jo Pa’ Min’m". Max Rambhojan, the local singer responsible for this monster tune, has arrived. 



In the video, he effortlessly sings and kickstarts a joyous street party with his band, Show Man, his dancers, kids, friends, family  and what seems like the whole neighbourhood. The song will gain cult status from then on, cementing the power of the 'Zouk Chiré' sound, a high tempo version of Zouk highly influenced by Guadeloupe's Carnival mass drum bands. Max self-releases his first solo album on vinyl in 1985, enrolling some of the best musicians the scene has to offer : his band leader King Klero, Guy Jacquet of les Vikings de la Guadeloupe fame on production duties, Ramon Pyrmée on synths, Claude Vamur, Meliza… 



In 1992 a new solo album follows. By then the artists have familiarized themselves with computers and the sound has gone full-on digital. In that album Max records an updated version of his ’Tou’t Jo Pa’ Min’m’ anthem to great effect. 



Reducing Max Rambhojan to a zouk artist would be a mistake. He’s first and foremost a master of Gwo-Ka, a musical practice born during the transatlantic slave trade and performed by all ethnic and religious groups of Guadeloupe. Gwo Ka allowed slaves to communicate, cope with their situation, mock the colonizers and maintain a cultural link with their African origins. It has never ceased to exist and has become a major part of the Island folk music culture. Max Rambhojan was schooled as a kid by Gwo-Ka pioneer Guy Conquette, and quickly joined the backing band of another legend, Ti-Sélès. That sound is the root of his particular style, especially vibrant on two tracks in his repertoire: ‘Cecilia’ and ‘Kouté Nouvel’, both featured on this release's b-side. A touch of Spiritual Jazz is also palpable, allowing a magical vibe to spread, giving birth to some of the deepest music from this era. 



In 2019, Max still performs Gwo-Ka every week-end in Guadeloupe and also hosts a show on local radio Media Tropical, 88.1FM.

Record store owner, DJ, producer, and digger extraordinaire @tomnoble comes to RNT with a superb edits EP of sought-after Caribbean and African sounds. The A side burns hot right out of the gate with the explosive and percussive Soca-disco pulse of They Came To New York, then settles into the laid back lilt of Zouk Pour Esa. On the flip, Disco Massamba is a wild ride of an Afro-disco burner and Parang-A-Teng brings it back to the Western hemisphere for some Latin-tinged funk from Barbados. Well worth it for the value of the original source material alone, this 12” is nothing short of dance floor destruction!
